"A REJUVENTATED Paul Chapman is aiming to spend far more time in Geelong's midfield this season than he did last year."

That blows about 95% of everybody's Best 22 selections out of the water.
Back to the drawing boards, everyone!

Yeah that is NOT a step forward for either Chappy or the club.

If he plays permanently up forward (as in 2012), can kick 30 goals and allow Caddy and/or Horlin-Smith (or hopefully) both to solidify their positions in our starting midfield that would be an enormous plus. Putting him back to the midfield is denying the inevitable and hurting the club's future.

Love Chappy as much as anyone, but his best value now is up forward.

Agree that his best spot is up forward.
But if he's fit enough it won't hurt to let him have a run on the ball, if only to show Caddy and Stringer (and possibly Smith and others) what they need to do to earn and keep a spot there.

WHos Smith?

It just seems like it will be so much better for the team if Chappy plays almost as a permanent forward pocket, with only 15-20 minutes in the midfield for a game, tops. Partridge , I'd probably increase the objective for Chappy if he plays this role slightly to 35-40 goals and his 2012 form suggests he's more than capable of that.

Still, we do probably need a couple more A-Graders in the midfield, so if Chapman/Johnson can provide us with one of those (I think having at least one of them in the forwardline at all times should be a non-negotiable) and get us 55-60 goals combined, I guess we'd have to be happy with that production.

Absolutely agree. We need to be looking forward to the future and getting midfield game time into Caddy, Horlin-Smith, Christensen, Duncan and even Shroeder. I don't mind if Chapman has the odd run through the middle but it shouldn't be at the expense of the kids.

If we're relying on 31 year olds to have a big pre season and be key components as permanent midfielders, then we aren't winning the flag. Much as I'm happy to hear Chappy going well, he's not the age group where the improvement needs to come from or will come from.

I don't see how chappy having a good preseason could at all be seen as a bad thing, just like how corey and ling played better in 2011 after disapointing 2010 seasons. We need imporvement for almost all players young and old.

Chappy may well want to play in the MF more but I'm not sure the MC will. The only thing I might see happening in that regard is SJ and Chappy rotating between MF and HFF with a combined MF presence of say 60% game-time at most? Would be a good threat to have at our disposal. Both can be very, very damaging in space and are hard-bodied mids with flair. But little or no defensive pressure. Would not want to see them in our defensive 50 too much at stoppages.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I am just saying it's not where the improvement needs to come from if we are to be flag contenders again.

I think Chappy will play the same role as last year at roughly the same standard, your right it's those coming up from beneath who must lead the charge in improvement if we are to again taste September success.

So chappy playing midfield is stopping the youngins developing but Stevie j playing there gives us x factor? Bit of favoritism with some here. If the youngins are good enough they'll get a game, simple as that.
Exactly, we still need to ensure that youngsters are earning there game.

Plenty of spots up for grabs at the moment with a number of key retirements and senior players approaching there swansongs.

Very competitive for spots, but as Chappy said in the article - he wasn't dissapointed with last season and kicked 36 goals. On that basis, he is a key player for us going forward.

I do agree that the team would be better served with the Chap playing out of the forward pockets 07' esque!

Chapmans ideal role for '13 would be for him to play the first half in the forward line and then in the second half when the pace goes out of the game allow him to go into the middle for a couple of 5 min bursts per quarter. Jude Bolton played this role really well for the swans last year and i think it would really suit Chapman.

Im yet to be convinced that Chappy is as damaging on ball , as he is as a forward. His conversion is high end , when fit and nimble he needs few chances to kill a side. Still some time on ball is always good , there will be plenty of time for young and all. We lacked serious help for Selwood last year and a fit Chappy is a serous footballer.
A fit and in form Chappy for R1 V Hawks , something in that for all of us.

Awesome role model for the kids i don't have a problem with a fit chappy rotating through the middle. Not suggesting for extended periods but just to change the dynanics in the centre.

Opens up a forward spot for one of the kids, can't say i have a problem with chappy being happy!

Will lead from the front and set the tone.

I was thinking the same thing reading through this thread (especially the Jude Bolton example - where an old head provided grunt that complemented Kennedy, Hannebry and Jack). As it stands, regardless of any long term plans for where our younger brigade will take the team into the future, Chapman is a required player in 2013. His strength and experience will still prove valuable in the guts for brief stints throughout matches should the MC feel that way inclined.I guess it depends on what we are looking to get out of 2013 (I.e whether we are looking to have a tilt at the flag or choose to aggressively blood more younger players) and ultimately what our win/loss looks like after a few rounds.

That said, Id expect (hope) that Chappy plays predominately as a smart, cunning forward this year. There may also be a chance that someone like Caddy has a huge year, eliminating the need to drag Chappy out of the forward line. Either way its good to have options

Thing is, Corey and Ling played better in 2011. It is now 2013 and Ling has retired, and Corey is two years older. I'm all for Chapman being fit and well, but he's not going up against time-trials and skills sessions in the H&A season - every kid on opposition lists under the age of 26 got a year stronger, faster, more determined too, and would consider themselves a chance to take revenge on the old guard like Chapman who used to bash them around when they were a draftee back in 07-08. Oddly enough one of my most enduring memories of 2007 was the image of a broken old Glenn Archer relegated to the bench in the Qualifying final while Geelong was tearing the arse off the Kangas. Clearly the fire was still there in his eyes, but the body just couldn't keep up with even so-so (by Geelong standards) players like Byrnes and Stokes.

You can only squeeze so much juice out of the orange before all that's left is the peel.

One of my favourite football memories. Especially as it was Chappy who annihilated him in the first half. Archer had been running on fumes and reputation for years. Was great to see him get slaughtered.

The lesson is very relevant; the young will always overthrow the old. It's already happened with Chappy too - Round 3 v North last year. He wasn't moved forward out of choice; he simply can't cut it on the ball anymore.

I'd say it's 0% favouritism and 100% honest appraisal. Johnson played most of last season as a midfielder, and did it pretty well. Chapman started in the middle, was brutally shown to be not up to it anymore, and relocated back to the forward line where he was excellent.

The "Johnson gives us x-factor" is simplistic and inaccurate anyway. Johnson in the midfield gives us far more hard work, hard running and good disposal than the occasional magic trick. More pertinently, his body is still up to the rigours of playing midfield. Chapman's isn't.
