Both those incidents were pretty cut and dried though. Two of the more thuggish acts from Freo players in a while.
I reckon Silvagni was provoked. Didn't some quiet player from Hawthorn get stuck into the little rat about a week after? I remember both incidents seemed pretty weird, and it was too unprovoked to put away as a set of outbursts.

Dawson and Silvagni's ill discipline weren't part of the plan. Injuries are one thing, but those blokes really let us down with things that are controllable.
If the club was seriously banking on 0 injuries and 0 suspensions... they are an embarrassment. McPharlin should've had cover and instead he had none. As a result we went into finals with no Silvagni, a well out of form Dawson, and no Luke. Which is farcical and appalling player management.

It's a bit like how people on this board love saying "well if we get McCarthy, and if Bennell capitalises on his potential, and if we don't get any injuries..." It's embarrassing. Hawthorn don't go into a season thinking those thoughts – because if something waaaaay more unlucky and unlikely happens than suspensions or injuries, say for example one of the best power forwards in the game goes down with a cancer, they still manage to look flawless.

People go on about how they love this 'no excuses' mantra of Lyon's and yet all we do on this forum is ****ing make excuses.

I am still wondering if you think too much about opinions here or think too little of them.

Why do you persist on conflating the opinions of people on here with the inner workings of the club?

There's not much to ****ing talk about if all we are forced to limit ourselves from all hypotheticals and speculative discussions.

You say Hawthorn don't go in to a season thinking those thoughts; been down to Glenferrie and asked them have you? Do you imagine they were perhaps thinking those thoughts in 2009? or 2010? or 2011? or 2012? Catalogued the Hawthorn forum extensively during each season? Given you seem to think that the opinions held therein somehow reflect the thoughts of those with actual power in the club.

So you're saying we should of had cover for the cover, incase the usual cover goes and does something stupid?

Bit like having extra back ups for the casual call in staff at work then? Sounds good in theory, but actually they just don't exist.

Cool your jets mate.

People getting a bit emotional there. Bit of truth hitting hard hey?

My jets are really cool. Don't be a patronising tool though, buddy pal champ cobba chief.

I'm just saying, the club was naive to say 'oh nah injury prone 33-year old will get rested and he'll be fine... chance of injuries? Nah we'll be good!' Of course players were going to go down in the backline. It was just pretty stupid to try and manage him. In some ways it wasn't a gamble that paid off. It didn't fail him or the team, but I don't look back on Luke playing in 2015 as a profound success. I don't want to see Pav get carried through like he was.

But the reality is, Taberner won't have an epiphany and man up and start kicking two goals a game (or holding onto marks in prelims when he hears footsteps – jeeeeeeZUZ. And people thought Sheridan's drop was big). Apeness, well who knows, he's been set back a year after his injury. I still think he's better and has much more promise than Tabs though. And we won't get anyone else because Fremantle haven't pulled a decent full forward since Justin Longmuir. Pav will keep battling far too hard than what he should and will end up going out with the perception he went one too long. I don't want that.

Forgot to warn ya. Do not call him mate. He doesn't like it.

Apt response I feel to that, but apologize on the patronizing.

You're right, but Pearce was given a go and the cover got injured. Should we have blooded more youth? We were in premiership contention and the risk would have perhaps an unneccesary step too far in light of benefits. As for the other part I won't quote, we're working on that with McCarthy(hopefully). But it's not just getting a forward, it's not as if our forward entries were quality most of the year were they?

There's only so many KPD's you can carry in a squad without becoming unbalanced.

At a guess Dawson missed, what, 15 games? SNOS probably 10 or so? MJ 5-10?

That's pretty unusual and is obviously going to hamper any rotation plans.

I thought Pav should retire but now that we have Bennell on board a strong elder statesman at the club would be valuable.

By all means Fyfe to take over captaincy but he should play 10-15 games but be around to help mould Fyfe.

We are already losing Mcpharlin, Crowley, Duffield. Part of the problem at GC was the lack of structure and older players to guide Bennell. So one more year to be around the club would be so important especially if we pick up a young McCarthy. .

Pav can be around the club to be the statesman without actually playing games.

Having Pav there as a leader assuming will be invaluable for the youngsters coming in - even assuming Fyfe taking the reins in 2016

Re: Bennell, he's never had a good captain - yes one that led by example on the field but clearly is known for not being vocal - Pav and Fyfe are

Fyfe will be a leader by example on and off the field - already a good speaker

I also think Pav can assume a forward coaching role and allow a change for Suma - by all reports Freo are looking at bringing in some raw coaches so having Pav being a on-field coach would be a big help

I have to agree with you on some points, and sometimes a bit of tough love is required. We had our best chance in 2013, but as always player
management, injuries, have been our downfall ever since.
Have to improve off the field just as much as improving our best22, but plenty of upside for the Dockers, and we are starting to look like a
genuine premiership threat for years to come.
If Fyfe does play more of a Hird role, and with Bennell, Crozier, Langdon, Weller all able to hit the scoreboard, only the gameplan, coaching
structures will hold us back.

I just finished reading Purple Heart, couldn't put it down, there's some very strong stuff in there. After reading it I've convinced myself Pav will play another year, one last crack at the flag, to the point where I'd be surprised if he did retire where as before reading the book I thought it was the most likely outcome. I just have a feeling he'll go around again, but he does really need help in the forward line.

I am pretty convinced as well. We have a lot off free list spots already. And really otherwise we could/will end up with Taberner and Apeness as key forwards (or in best case McCarthy/Casboult and Taberner/Apeness). Not necesserily bad in the long term, but Pav would still make that forward line look a lot better and more dangerous. And I don't think we have given up on having a crack at a premiership right now. We have a premium midfield atm and I think when we can sort out structure in forwardline and also back we are a danger again. Even with an aging Pav and partly average personal. And from my perception Pav is very selfless mostly. Don't think it will hurt his pride when people think he has gone on for a year too long as long as he knows he adds something to the team.

He's pretty good at knowing when to leave his man to effect a contest. At least that's something.
Seriously mate, it we're going to win a flag, we need to weed these types out. People might disagree but you wouldn't see his type on Hawthorns list. They got rid of his years ago. He's ....house sorry
