That's wild. I've read the odd instance of causing damage with static but no one I've known and assumed it was pretty rare. I've always taken the basic precautions of not building on carpet, and when I do build I build in my kitchen/dining area where I can occasionally grab a tap to ground myself. Also if you need to open up the case to do any replacement, then if you have the room then leave it plugged in (obviously turn off the PSU though) because this leaves the entire case earthed and you'll be constantly touching the case and stuff as well.

Yeah I mean I don't know for sure if it was static, I just don't know what else it could have been.

my new PC has been all good through Cyberpunk 2077 and a few other games and general use...no tech issues or anything, aside from one hardware issue which I may as well warn you guys about

I got the Asus ProArt pa602 case and it has these two thick 200mm case fans in the front. basically from day 1, one of them made an annoying clicking noise that almost sounded like an idling diesel engine.. (I legit thought it was a truck outside somewhere at first) - went through the process with Scorptec to get that fan replaced which took 7 weeks but got a new fan. Fit it and worked fine for a few days until it started making the same noise and the other original fan also started the noise

Ended up giving up on Asus and just putting 2x200mm Noctua fans in the front and they're so much better. Even with my ear up against the fan I can barely hear it, and no noticeable difference in temps despite being thinner

looked online and seems like this is a widespread issue with those fans. so yeah if you can't stand annoying noise from the PC dont trust this case/their 200mm fans. Otherwise the case is great though, I'll never go back to small cases again (have had a few ITX builds over the years)

Have initiated the return process with Amazon, won't actually send it back until Monday though. Bit bummed about it (these things happen I guess lol). Just got me dumbfounded how it could be incompatible with my motherboard.... even though the motherboard (and ssd website) both say they should work together.

And as I said yesterday - I've formatted/re-used it in the PS5, as an external drive in a ssd dock, even slotted it in another pc and it worked.

Makes me feel silly in that I was like - maybe it's not inserted correctly.... but I'm not breaking the ssd slot just to try and make it fit more snuggly than it already was. Other ssd's (both normal and heatsink versions) went in fine and could be read instantly upon booting up.

Now I have self doubt in what brand + heatsink vs non heatsink version should I try and get next.

Did you end up trying a motherboard BIOS update (if available)? There's also potentially a firmware update for the drive too.

Bought a QNAP NAS a few years ago because I couldn't be bothered managing another Windows device, now I kind of regret it because replacing drives appears to be impossible (or I'm missing something really obvious). I've got 4x8TB drives as individual volumes and wanted to replace a couple with 16TB drives and move the 8s to an external enclosure (QNAP TR-004), but apparently it's not that simple. Everything I've tried so far results in disks not being readable in the opposite device, I'm kind of at the point where I might just leave the 16TBs in the enclosure, or maybe buy a bigger NAS with room to expand and just migrate the data across.

Old speed on 50/20

New speed on 250/100 (same price) with ethernet over power as part of my network (don't ask but I can't change it for now)

I'm pretty happy with that.

Still f**king around with this NAS, and worked out that either my PC has an issue, or my network is shagged (or both)

Transfers between my PC and NAS have been running at around 100mbit and USB transfers are quite slow too, so I picked up a 2.5GB network card......... no change. Also picked up a USB controller card, turns out that requires a larger PCIe port which is blocked by my 5080....... so that goes in the spares pile. I kept reading about issues with the x570 chipset and performance issues particularly with powerful GPUs hence the new components, I've turned it down to PCIe Gen 3....... still no change.

Thought it might be my network so I finally removed an old TP-Link modem from the equation (only has 100mbit LAN ports) and only used my Netgear Mesh..... same thing. Tested between a VM and my PC, and my VM and the NAS...... similar speeds. Now I'm probably going to throw $300 at a 2.5GB switch in case my old Netgear is failing so I can probably have no change there too.

Networking isn't really my jam so I'm just stabbing in the dark here, but if you're hitting some sort of 100mbit bottle neck it isn't anything silly like still running an old cat 5 cable somewhere?

Tried different Cat5e on all my devices in the office and no change, even just changed the one between the mesh router and the NBN NCD and no change.

I found a cheaper 2.5GB switch, just waiting for Umart to get it ready for pickup, might grab new cables if they have any too. To make things weirder I just plugged my work laptop into the network via a Thunderbolt dock and it was hitting 500mbit off the NAS while the other data transfer was still going.

Envious :p

Took a few days to kick in but I'm happy, can also multi task - run a download while online gaming and don't lag around now :p. Also love large games (eg: 50gb or so in size) now taking 9-11 minutes or so.

I do recall the 56k modem days and even the early broadband days of 20 download - 5 upload.

Bios is up to date firmware wise, couldn't do an update for the ssd (well I might have been able to manage it if I switched parts around but oh well). I initiated the refund last weekend, sent it off on Monday. Amazon got it on Tuesday.... and my refund was approved/initiated Wednesday (should get it next week... much better than their original timeline of October 30).

I've ordered and HAVE another SSD right now, might do a clone and chuck it in the system during the prelim tonight :p

I was downloading something last night and was hitting 92mb/s and when the download hit 1gb in seconds I actually did think back to the old 56k days and the requirement for things like download managers so you could pause as anything a couple mb would not only take ages but risked being interrupted.

Was watching Bitwit today, and if I had the $ and patience (both for stock and building it) love to get the small form factor cases made by Thor Zone. NanoQ looks really slick.

NTD getting installed today. Was looking at prices, and can't believe the difference between 25/10 I'm on now is $15 less on the standard price than 500/50 with the same ISP.

Went down the rabbit hole of power boards and joule ratings for the NTD. For that and PC equipment, does everyone just go the solid brand standard surge protected board, or have you gone all out?

I typically just pick something that isn't cheap and nasty but also have no reason to buy anything too expensive. I usually just pick Belkin.

I wanted to try and give Cities Skylines 2 another crack to see if they've done anything about the crashing in the latest patch. I'm so used to setting something to download and coming back later but at around 90mb/s it took about 10 minutes to download 60gb. I never thought I'd see the day when good internet was achievable in Australia.

Google says this wasn't possible but there are smarter people in here who might know how I did this.

So when I went to play BF6 it told me secure boot wasn't on. I checked system information and sure enough it was off. Easy enough, just booted into BIOS and set it up. However I thought this was a requirement to even install Windows 11? Google tells me that this isn't possible without a bypass. Was that only a requirement for updating from older Windows 10 machines?

You didn’t have to have secure boot on for Win 11 but the requirements meant the hardware had to support it still.

People buy laptops and it’s not on either.

The bigger issue was the TPM version

You guys are right, not required anymore. It sounds like the motherboard only needs to be secure boot capable. On previous generations of motherboards secure boot was enabled when enabling TPM and I'm 99.99943355435% sure it was a requirement when doing that Windows 10 to 11 update eligibility checklist thing. It's why I was curious when I noticed mine wasn't enabled when TPM was by default.

Just on the topic of secure boot, keys are set to expire next year. The web says Microsoft will be working with brands to roll out updates like BIOS and stuff. However on ASRock's forums someone contacted ASRock about when we might expect to start seeing BIOS updates with updated keys the reply was no BIOS update will be required and they will be delivered via Windows update. I guess with UEFI Windows now has a better handle on BIOS stuff. I hope this is the case. I'm the kind who will never update BIOS unless there is a very specific reason to do so. I will typically find what the most stable version is, install it and never touch it again. So I really don't want to run into any potential gremlins disabling BitLocker and TPM just to update it or having to redo whatever settings I changed in BIOS.

Can someone explain to me why on Firefox my bookmarks and bookmark manager are way out of sync? Changes I make to bookmarks in the manager don't take effect on the bookmarks and if I want to use that bookmark with the change I made I need to open them from the manager. Then the manager isn't recognising any bookmarks I have made in the last probably 2 months.

I made the change because of Chrome blocking adblockers despite my hatred of Firefox but my god I am so bloody tempted to just say **** it and go back to Chrome just for a decent bloody bookmark manager.
