Nah have room. Not a lot though considering this is a h710 tower with front rad and fans.

Was also able to finally remove the plastic over heatsink and M.2 that I didn't realise I left on a couple years ago then couldn't be bothered dismantling to remove . RIP custom cables though. Look forward to when Cablemod fully release their right angle mods.

RIP cable combs. Had to rip them off the Cablemod leads to be able to fold them back in due to the adaptor and broke one set of combs.

Der Bauer reckons many of the 7900XTX cards with the same vapour chamber cooler design, both FE and partner cards, will need to be recalled. Poking fun at NVIDIA on social media over the power connector looks a bit silly now.

Wanted something new to test the 4080 so finally caved in to CoD. Probably the best looking game I've seen to date and the card isn't even breaking a sweat. I know the size of the 4000 cards is a meme but when half of it is heatsink and heat pipes with monster fans then you expect it to cool well and it really does. So far in CoD with cranked graphics and DLSS with Reflex on it's sitting at a locked 166/167 fps (because of Reflex) with the highest temp I've seen 61C. Due to the temp it's even boosting to a higher clock speed. It's rated to boost to 2655mhz in OC mode but it's typically sitting at 2895mhz and seen it hit 2910mhz a few times. The average temp while playing CoD is high 50s with my CPU in the 60s. When playing games without DLSS though like Destiny 2 where the card is working harder I'm seeing low to mid 60s consistently. I know some techtubers are vehemently against proprietary features like DLSS but if it means my card isn't working as hard so I can push more eye candy at better temps then it's a winner. Whether it's DLSS or FSR, resolution scaling is really the future as AI gets better and higher resolution gaming is becoming more standard and AA is getting more expensive. DLSS in CoD looks native to my eyes. Only weird artefacts I've noticed are when some distance objects like lights buzzed out a couple times but I assume that was due to LODs of the game object.

Some older titles are seemingly capped though or need a patch. Destiny 2 maintains only a marginal higher frame rate with better lows but I'm still yet to hit my monitor max refresh of 175mhz and it still has some pretty wild fps jumps. Current Christmas event in the tower is still causing it to chug at times but that ends tonight so I'll test it again tomorrow. Metro Exodus is normally my go to for testing but I need to play around with the settings still. It should be able to hit 100+ with DLSS quality setting but I must have changed some other stuff previously because mine was a bit choppy.

Even though it's very old, I always like to see how certain new cards increase the FPS in GTA V . I know I need to branch out and play more games lol.


Currently contemplating buying another laptop. When I got my ASUS TUF A15 in 2021, I had intended to buy that and a second laptop both were going to be used for different purposes. Ended up just sticking with the A15 (spending another $1,800 - $2,500 seemed pointless). The A15 is still going strong, but I'm getting the itch to get another laptop now, even though I don't really NEED it - it's more of a want.

I saw the prices of many of them over the Christmas/New Year sale period which I thought were pretty good (JB Hifi's were a bit laughable, yes they brought many down to $1,500-$2,000............ what the prices should be. JB usually sell them for $2500-$3000 when proper computer stores regular prices are $1,900 - $2,500 lol). When Harvey Norman have cheaper options, you know JB Hifi is doing something wrong

I did see the 2022 version of my current laptop has come down in price (did go back up again as of yesterday). I was looking at other laptops which were better in some ways compared to my A15.... yet worse in others (example: weaker battery life.... and RAM being soldered in - I'd like to upgrade, not be held back).

Just mulling it over, it's not something I need, but more of a want. I'll probably hold off and see what the 2023 range looks like.

I have other expenses coming up (again more want than need) - I want to consolidate all of my external hdd's and put the content on newer ones. Effectively backing them up (and hopefully downsizing the amount of externals that I have to a degree, by buying external hdd's with bigger TB amounts).

oof at 4070ti prices. Nvidia certainly weren't wrong that it's a "3090ti" killer (except for maybe in 4K) but they're priced for around what the 3080 was. I still firmly believe that a lot of the 40 series pricing is due to excess 30 series stock. All my FB ads from local retailers and board brands are for 30 series cards on sale. 3090 and 3080 is just about sold out everywhere but if I search for 3060 and 3070 at Scorptec they're swimming in them. 3070s are around ~$800 depending on the make and model and they would be a hard sell if you could get roughly same or better performance than a 3090ti in a 4070ti if it were sub $1500. Prices will drop like the 4080 has. I wouldn't be surprised if by mid year the 4070ti is around the $1200-1500 mark with the 4060 slightly sub $1000 leaving a gap for 3060ti and 4070 non-ti.

And people have to compare that to AMD potentially having to recall all 7900's due to overheating instances, almost like an opposite Oprah where no one gets a card as you either can't afford it or it gets set on fire.

The more this gen releases, the more they seem to be failing QA and EVGA GTFO was the wiser choice.

The 7900XTX issue seems to only apply to founders cards and a specific cooler design. 4080 prices are currently in free fall and it should stabilise pretty soon.

Der8auer was correct about his vapour chamber conclusion. AMD have confirmed that some do not have enough liquid in them.

so i got an rx6700 (non XT) as a cheapish upgrade to keep me going a bit longer. struggled like **** to remove the old GPU...finally got it out. then even though the rx6700 technically is smaller in all dimensions than the old GPU, I didn't realise it goes further out the back side toward the CPU/RAM due to the backplate...it wouldn't go all the way down because of the RAM latches. so i cut them off with an old tile snipper then it still wouldn't go all the way in because the cooler goes lower than the old GPU and it was being stopped by the sata ports... but it went down far enough that it looked fully in and it works fine it just won't click the GPU latch up. the mobo sits horizontally in this case so GPU should stay in fine.....



the above is just one of the reasons i'm never going small form factor again hahah

anyway...tested some games, Grounded for example gone from 30-40fps to 85-95. Insurgency Sandstorm gone from unstable 15-95 to 165 solid. not bad for no having to change any other part

also dusted the PC with the data vac I bought ages ago, it works really well. great piece of kit

Congrats on new GPU day. Regardless of the upgrade it's always a fun day. Reckon the 6700 will keep you going for longer than just a bit too .

And those PCIe latches can be nasty if they haven't been moved in a while. I had a bit of trouble removing my 3080. Too chonky to get my finger in so tried using soft things and it wouldn't budge. Grabbed a screw driver and still wouldn't move. I stopped using the screw driver after putting a few small scores in the latch and started to fear slipping and doing worse. Ended up jamming a pen lid in somehow and levering it.

Some generic high mesh back office chair that weighs a ton, but it'll last a lot longer and be a lot cooler than the PU Leather trash "gaming" chairs are made of. Go to your local office furniture store and have a look.

It's going to sound crap straight out of the box but google voicemeter banana and you can use that program to get just about anything sound half decent. Tons of YouTube tutorials out there that will run you through it.

After a bunch of procrastination have finally found the time to finish building my new rig.

It's been well over a decade since my last build (i5-2500k), and after some initial boot issues, isolating and testing every part and thinking that my motherboard was faulty eventually realized that I'd forgotten to connect the 12V connectors.
