With MSFS 2024 a few days away, was making me think I should take more advantage of the monitor (Samsung Neo 57") currently got the 3080ti/5800x - any point in upgrading to one of/both 7800x3d/4090? (after donating a kidney of course)

If you don't want to sacrifice an organ you could grab a 5700x3d and wait for RTX 50 series and grab a 5080. That way you'll be able to use the same motherboard and a 5080 is going to (most likely) match a 4090 on performance if not beat it a bit and will only be at a fraction of the price of what the 4090 is. That's unless you really want the VRAM of a 4090 type card. Also if NVIDIA make any update to DLSS exclusive to 50 you'll be able to use that too. Don't underestimate those 3Dvcache Ryzen CPUs either. The 5800x3d (sadly been discontinued and replaced by the 5700x3d and 5600x3d) is a monster and still the third best gaming CPU in nearly everything but the 5700 and 5600x3d are usually now third and fourth. If I didn't routinely build new every 4'ish years I'd have swapped out my 5900x for a 5800x3d myself and completely skipped AM5.

AMDs future GPU range will use "UDNA Architecture" instead of RDNA and goes into production Q2 2026, it should also get used in PlayStation 6. This might be where they get back in the high-end GPU game, as it's trying to unify their gaming and datacentre chips.

I've concluded WA PLE are the equivalent to Scorptec here. Everyone have really positive experiences and their service is good. However I've been to the PLE store in Melbourne twice and both times were terrible experiences. Infact the first time I nearly got into a punch on with the sales dude because he was being a campaigner (and I promised the wife years ago I'd stop "taking it outside" when people shit me).

I think I've used them once or twice besides that just for pick up because their store is in the same suburb as my work, only about 2 minutes away, and I drive past it every day. That's only the really rare occasions that Scorptec or PC Case Gear haven't had something in stock that I've needed urgently or they were significantly cheaper.

Today is one of those days. Grumble grumble. Wish me luck.

Update: much better experience. Their Moorabbin store has finally employed people not only capable of normal human communication but also friendly. Old mate was up for a chat so PLE (Moorabbin specifically) are back in dwwaino's good books.

Not really the right thread for it, but thought of all of BF, decent chance the crew around here might have an idea.

Looking at fixing/modding some existing controllers....does anyone around here have any experience with solder stations/kits? Seems like a bit of a mixed bag researching online.

What do you want to specifically do? Jaycar has everything from hot air blowers (expensive) to the flux and copper braid. They even sell enameled copper wire if you want to re-run any traces.

I have a few old damaged controllers that I found in storage at my folks. Thinking rather than turfing them, try and fix (and with GC use on the Switch). 8bitdo sell a wireless mod kit but connecting the rumble motor requires a small basic solder.

If I don't burn myself - might look at doing the odd console repair too. Saw Jaycar had some cheap kits to muck around with as well.

Knew SFA a few days ago, but it's actually really interesting stuff.

For all the faults of the internet, it's kinda crazy the amount of info online.

On my FB I regularly get videos from a UK mob called Retro Six (I think they post to Instagram which I don't have but the videos come up on FB). The bloke fixes and mods retro consoles and films a lot of the process. It might be worth checking out just watching him do it just to see how he goes about his soldering, cleaning etc.

Oh yeah, looking at guys like this too. Especially with issues with high demanding games on the Switch.

Issue is more about what tools to use, getting conflicting info on stuff on Jaycar/ Chinese ones with potentially dodgy power.

I think it was 1995 my family bought an IBM Aptiva from Myer and I reckon that was about $4000 from memory! It was a blistering 75mhz Pentium 😁
Early to mid 90s folks purchased a PC printer combo for like 7k

I remember this bad boy.

Every 90's teenager using the school library for assignments.
Microsoft was head of the curve and innovative with tech then they stop, Encarta was the first Wikipedia, all they had to do was transfer it to the web and continue to expand it.

Same with Xbox, surface devices they predict the future trend then fall in a heap.

This chat on old PC's has led me to go onto eBay and buy the best monopoly game ever made. So niche as it came in packets of LCM bars there's no YouTube footage but this game was a blast. Can't wait to replay it over the festive period.

Think it's almost time for a full PC rebuild. Is the 5000 series cards due early next year? Might start hording parts

Announcement of 90, 80 and quite possibly 70 is confirmed to be at CES in a few weeks with the 5090 release likely to be end of Jan/early Feb, 5080 either same time or shortly after in Feb, 70 definitely a little later with the rest of the mid range stack to come in probably Q2.

I really wanted the x870e ASRock Nova but it sounds like so does the rest of the internet. The next popular is the ASRock Taichi and Scorptec opened orders again for it today and after waiting to see if they would for the Nova and didn't I caved on the Taichi. More expensive but aesthetically fits in better with my planned build. I think the ASRock boards are really popular because of their lane configuration as they're the only boards you can load every M2 slot and not have to worry about any lane sharing or pulling lanes from the main gen 5 PCIe or M2 slots.

So that's now everything bought and all that's left is to wait for the RTX 50 launch.

So I'm a fan of Scorpy, been shopping there for years and will continue to do so but this practice needs to stop. They aren't the only ones who do this either. This PSU used to be $319. About a month ago the ATX 3.1 update of the PSU came out and has its own model number and listing on Scorpy at $340. When black friday sales started this older 3.0 model was reduced to $229 and the price remained $229 even after the sale ended. I know this for a fact because I ordered the updated 3.1 version only last night and double checked the listings of both CPUs to make sure I was getting the right one. So this isn't save $90. It might be save $90 from RRP but it hasn't been a cent dearer than $229 for a month.

Perfect. Need to figure out what case I want to build in. My P600S has done its job but time for a change 😁

Air flow cases are all the craze now. Can thank Gamer's Nexus for that! My recent case shopping was some of the best times I've had looking at cases because there are so many good options currently.

This is something I didn't even know was a thing to think about until recently 😮‍💨

It's confusing at first but I find it helps narrow your selection of boards depending on your use case. For example I could immediately rule out all Gigabyte Aorus boards because after looking at their block diagrams it appears like they're aimed at streamers/creators. Those boards have lots of lane sharing from the storage to feed the extra USB ports and PCIe slots so you can run things like capture cards. ASRock have only just started appearing at Aussie retailers and so far I can only find two that list them (Scorptec and Centre Com) and before that I was deadset on the x870 Tomahawk. Being an x870 and not an x870e it has less lanes but it was the only board at that price where I could run two M2 drives at full speed without pulling lanes from anything else. With the x870e ASRock boards that will never be an issue if I plan on loading even more storage in the future.
