How long before a place/state/country can drop the 'new' on its name?

I was reading former Test spinner Tim May' autobiography yesterday, and he poses this very accurate observation.

He claims that places should no longer be called 'New' example, New Zealand, New South Wales etc. after a period of 15 years. He states that after 15 years, the country is no longer 'new' as people all over the world already know about it, therefore negating the reason for calling it 'new'.

I feel that New Zealand should drop the 'new' and be known plainy as 'Zealand'.

BTW, where is old Zealand?! Doesn't a place have to already exist in order to call it new something? i.e New England, New Holland. Did a place called Zealand ever exist?

Even old New York
Was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople....

Here's a true story one of my old editors once told me...

Old Trafford, Manchester. Very famous soccer ground in England, for the uninitiated-- also known as "The Theatre of Dreams".

Someone once asked him-- with a straight face, mind you!-- where New Trafford was.

Oh, my friggin' god, must've been the look on his face...

Cheers,
William

I've never been to a game at Princes Park or Kardinia Park. Shame they're no longer around.

Geelong's ground will ALWAYS be known as Kardinia Park to the die-hards.

So it always exists that way. :D

Cheers,
William

Prussia would be nice, but what about the Ottoman Empire?

Not sure about the Ottoman Empire, hasn't really held an attraction for me. Seems when Aussies go there we have to climb up some cliffs, doesn't sound appealing.

Prussia is the go, especially the beautiful city of Danzig.
