187cm 85kg Half Forward?

Good skill set, but can run pretty hot and cold.... one of those high risk/high reward situations that could be worth a punt on the rookie list.

One player i've actually seen a bit of and definitely wouldn't be against us picking him up. If we got him as a rookie, i'd call that a low risk/high reward situation. Nothing to lose imo.

This might help a little bit...

As might these comments from one of the Saints posters on his player profile...

Don't think I've read this one before, but can be interesting down the track when reflecting on where a player has got to:

http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/defa...x?newsid=69336

A versatile medium forward/midfielder who can provide good run, Heyne is a strong mark and also possesses good goal sense.

What sort of player are you?
I’m a wingman/full-forward type of player. I’m pretty quick on my feet and fairly strong in the air.

Strengths?
I like to think I’m a fairly good running player both ways.

Weaknesses?
Ground balls with two hands … I can tend to go at them with one hand every now and again.*

Which AFL player do you feel you most resemble?
Probably Andrew Embley from West Coast. He’s a tall wingman who runs pretty hard, so [he’s got] pretty similar attributes as well. I like to watch him mainly, so I try to base my game around his.

After 3 AFL games in 2010, many would have expected Heyne to press his claim for more games in the St Kilda jumper this year.

Unfortunately Heyney got some knee soreness, and ended up going the other way (playing 2 VFL reserves matches during 2011).

Late in the season he recaptured some form, with 22 possessions and 6 tackles in round 21, and 2 goals and 6 tackles in round 22. Averaged 15 possessions and 3 tackles for the season.

But overall, 14 goals in 15 games isn’t what the club was looking for from a guy who should’ve been on the cusp.

A shame for a good talent to be delisted, particularly one the Saints board has sponsored for the past two years. We have found him a pleasure to be associated with.

At TAC level he was a goal kicking wingman/HF.....he could have some absolute purple patches and look like a world beater, then miss one running into an open goal from 15m....a frustrating player, but one with a fair degree of natural talent....good size, leg speed and a good skill set....from afar it seems he may need to focus on doing the simple things well rather than the flashy.

Anyone know what ever happened to that fellow Kite from the Adelaide Crows that was training with is a couple of years ago ?

The kid has talent. After 3 games in 2010 really needed to press his claim for senior berth and unfortunately just went backwards. Showed late in the year what he could produce, but papers were probably stamped half way thru the year.

I thought he was pretty good in his first 2 games, has a booming left foot on him and can pin point a pass 50m away. Hope you guys, or another club picks him up and he's able to be given a 2nd chance.

Here's a little more info on him:

A versatile medium forward/midfielder who can provide good run, Heyne is a strong mark and also possesses good goal sense. He is an AIS/AFL Academy graduate. From Orbost-Snowy Rovers F.C.

Nick was drafted in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft with a 3rd round selection (St Kilda) No. 48 overall.

A strong-marking player who can play a role up forward or on the wing, Heyne made his senior debut in the NAB Cup in 2009 and enjoyed a solid first season, making 16 VFL appearances across half-forward for Sandringham. Got better as the year went on, kicking five goals against Bendigo late in the season, and was named an emergency in round 19 against Hawthorn.

Heyne did well in his senior debut against Essendon in Round 8 and was picked for another two games during the home and away season. A strong-marking player with a nice left foot and can play a role up forward or on the wing. Will be lining up for his third year in the system and the Club will be expecting significant improvement.

Draft history: 2008 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round selection (St Kilda) No. 48 overall.
The former Gippsland Power midfielder/forward who grew up supporting the Kangaroos provides run through the middle, is strong overhead and knows how to kick a goal – he was fourth in last year’s TAC Cup goalkicking with 37. Quick and with a good leap, the 2008 AIS-AFL Academy member is lightly framed.

Of Heyne, Jason McCartney said:

"He single-handedly nearly won the game for Vic Country against Vic Metro in the first game of the under-18 championships. He was quiet in the first quarter, but after that he took a couple of massive hangers and kicked three or four goals. Nick plays predominantly as a wing/half-forward, but he can be very dangerous deep and has a great vertical leap as well as a good set of hands.

What is Mark Austin like as a player? Have heard next to nothing about him.

He's adequate at the moment and someone who we all thought could take the next step. Injury and poor management probably ruined him at the Blues in the end. Determined player though, I think he only played the one game this year versus West Coast, check my sig for links to watch that match.

Just googling Nick Heyne and found that he trained with us when he was a member of the AIS/AFL Academy squad, back in 2008.

http://www.carltonfc.com.au/tabid/4311/News/NewsArticle/Default.aspx?newsId=54598

Gippsland Power’s 17 year-old wingman Nick Heyne, together with Northern Knights’ 16 year-old centre half-forward/ruckman Tom Hill, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Chris Judd, Marc Murphy and Matthew Kreuzer, in what shapes as an important season in their football lives.

Club must have liked what they saw

Cheers for the info, guys.

The Tom Hill mentioned in that article is at the Bulldogs now. Would probably be competing with Austin for that swingman spot at Willi should Austin be playing 2's.

Between the two of them you might have to put on more medical staff at the kennel ;)

Plays at my old club Glenroy in the EDFL. Didn't want it in the end. Plenty of athletic talent, maybe not so much above the shoulders*

*played with him as a junior

So does this mean that Sellar (ex Crow) is not training with us as I read a week or two ago and it's only this guy?

Don't know anything about Heyne. Another medium half-forward on the list could be a good thing with Houllihan retiring, and Collins and Kerr yet to prove themselves in that role.

It's interesting looking at the different sizes of "Permission to Train" lists. StKilda and Richmond are inviting anyone who has kicked a footy before. Carlton and a few others are being very selective.

From a strategy point of view it makes sense not to reveal our hand at this stage. Therefore Heyne is probably on the edge of being on our "short-list".

:)
