PHIL SMYTH has resigned as the coach of the Australian Boomers.

Basketball Australia chief executive Scott Derwin today said: "We have accepted Phil Smyth's resignation as the Boomers coach.

"Phil sent a report through to us which I reviewed this morning, with that report he has decided to tender his resignation."

Smyth's decision to step down follows Australia's shock 2-1 loss to New Zealand in last weekend's Oceania qualifying series for the world championships.

Now we want Brian Goorjian as coach -he's da man to save Australian Basketball.

Theres a good argument for not spreading yourself too thin.

I remember when the SA state coach in footy used to be a current league coach, it never worked trying to juggle 2 roles.

Smyth was very harshly dealt with, the loss to New Zealand was inexcusable but he tried a few new things and the team was very much a young one, still getting to know one another.

There's no doubt he quit because it was obvious the support was not there for him, which is disappointing after just 5 months or so in the job. Good luck to whoever replaces him.
