Matera cleared of striking

West Coast Eagle Phillip Matera was tonight cleared of striking by the AFL tribunal after an incident during the match against Collingwood at the MCG last Saturday.

The tribunal accepted Matera made contact with Collingwood's Tarkyn Lockyer with a bump in the last quarter, but said the video footage of the incident was not clear enough to find him guilty.

Player advocate Bert Gaudion said the footage showed Matera bumped Lockyer with his upper arm, but said it could not be determined how the Magpie was knocked unconscious.

Lockyer told the tribunal he remembered trying to shepherd Matera from teammate Shane Wakelin, but could not recall the moment of impact and regained consciousness as he lay on the turf.

Lockyer, who was carried off the ground after the clash, said he had a sore jaw and two of his teeth had been loosened after the incident.

But Gaudion argued it was unclear whether Lockyer's injuries were caused by Matera or Wakelin, who was shirtfronted by Eagle Troy Wilson at the same time and also fell to the ground.

Matera, who appeared before the tribunal via a video link-up, said he believed he wasn't big enough to knock Lockyer unconscious.

"I'm not that big, I don't know if I could do that ... I'm only a little fella," he said.

Matera's charge was brought before the tribunal by AFL investigations officer Rick Lewis, who interviewed both players yesterday.

Matera is now free to play in the Eagles' game against the Western Bulldogs at Subiaco on Sunday.

No comment, until an Eagles player gets carted off after a run in with an opposition player under the same circumstances, of course you will all say there was nothing in it.

It really doesn't matter what you or anyone else thinks.

Before the tribunal I posted: "Having seen it several times now, it's touch and go - clearly Lockyer went to shepherd and Phil protected himself - the question will be whether the tribunal thought that he protected himself legally or whether the elbow was raised."

We now know the result. Tell me why I'm biased.

And don't let kuepper see you using those rolleyes - they are for "argumentatively challenged" people.

You know its true, the simpletons version of sarcasm.

Whatever happened to the written word conveying a point?

As usual, you are absolutely 100% correct, Kuep.

Your post is just more proof that you are indeed a very smart, witty, insightful and handsome young man.

I'd like to take this opportunity, to say how privileged I feel that you have chosen this board to share the above qualities.

What goes around comes around......

Frankly had the roles been reversed ie Tarkyn struck Phill and he was cleared, then I think we would have a very different topic here.

See Buzz has displayed true gratitude, and admiration, without having to use any version of smily faces.

Thanks Buzz for the kind words - leave the handsome alone, as your ambigious sexuality slightly disturbs me ... but other than that, thank you good sir.

*insert smiley face of choice*

And you question Buzz's sexual practices?

And Sabre, I'm developing a mental image of you as Snideley Whiplash, shaking your fist at the tribunal and shouting, "Curses! Foiled again!"

Don't worry mate, one day you'll have the last laugh at the Eagles. One day.
