I know no one wants to give away pick 10 especially in this draft, but is this worth doing? Considering our record with 1st round draft picks is it better removing the gamble and grabbing a player who is proven?

Varcoe has class, pace, excellent disposal and can tackle. All ingredients we crave. My only doubts are his intensity and hardness. I believe he could become a top midfielder. Imagine the class in the middle with Porps and Varcoe.

Geelong can survive without him, and a top 10 pick would be appealing. To give 10 away I believe we need to secure a 1st rounder by trading away a player.

Definetly not. There's too much talent (especially KPP talent) in this draft to waste. Gary Ayres and James Fantasia were responsible for our poor record with first rounders and i don't think we'll be wasting this one coming up. Come on Rendell, find us a gun CHF!!!

He's a good player in a good team. They generally drop away a bit when they go to a lesser team.

Would he be handy in our forward line?? Yes.

Would I give up pick 10 for him?? No.

In a weak draft I might. In this draft definitely not.

By pick 10 will there be any KPP left and Craig was there for Meesen, Sellar and Pfeiffer.

He looks very good in a very good side but I am not sure if he has shown enough class to suggest he could turn into a quality midfielder and would he go missing in a forward line where the ball doesn’t come in as often as it does with Geelong.

Pick 10 for Varcoe is a bit risky (he may be worth it but it would be a major gamble for us at this stage of our list development). I would consider swapping pick 10 for Geelong’s pick 16 and Varcoe but we need to participate in the first round this year.

Yes hes a good player but would he fall away? Do you not agree he has pace, skill, and can tackle? I wouldnt want to recruit him as a handy forward but as a classy midfielder.

Proven?

When you make up hypothetical trades involving your team, you normally try and make your side get the good deal. You've done the opposite. Varcoe has the potential to be a very good player, but that’s it, potential. Been on an AFL list for two years and hasn’t done a whole lot. Sure he's showed a few promising signs, especially his tackling and he has good skills, and I'd like to have him in our side, but I certainly wouldn’t be trading pick 10 for him.

He has all the attributes of a midfielder and roams the ground even in his forward role. And Geelongs midfield isnt exactly the easiest to break into.

As for a gamble, whats more of a gamble picking an unknown or someone who is currently playing good finals football in an awesome team?

Seriously you would be mad to do this...

His disposal is far from great, also teams would look at him more if he wasn't at Geelong.

Hence why i would consider doing the deal but would need some perks (like Geelong first round pick) to get the deal done. We need to stay in the first round.

I believe he has gone past potential. Hes forced his way into one of the best teams ever and has not only kept his spot for the finals but played well.

Thats why I think we need to trade a player. I cant see Geelong giving us Varcoe and a 1st rounder just to move up 6 spots.

He really hasn't gone past potential. 28 goals in 32 games, hardly inspiring numbers from a small forward and a guy you're willing to throw our 10th pick at. Chapman is out, so who else is competing for his spot? Shannon Byrnes? Of all the positions in the Geelong team to crack, right now his is probably the easiest. And there's a chance he could make way for Chapman next week.

Like who? We don’t have a player (that we would be willing to give up for Varcoe) that would walk into their first 22.

He was in the side last week with Chapman.

Go back to my inital OP, we need to trade a player but not to Geelong.

Did you see his disposal tonight?

Gee I guess that makes his career then doesn't it?

By all means, throw away your last chance to get some young talent for a few years, but don't cry when he's struggling in the 2nd's.

Not sure if he has kept his spot with Chapman to return next week.

They were speculating about this on the TV and I think they played a snippet from Bomber's post-match press conference saying that Varcoe wouldn't be the player to miss.

I wasn't concentrating overly much, but I think that's what they said.

You dont think hes young talent? And playing in the 2nds youve got to be joking.

I wasn't concentrating much either but Thompson said that Mark Blake wouldn't be missing. Stupid question by Watson because as if there was ever a chance he would miss but perhaps that was what you heard or did he say someone else wouldn't be the one to miss?

You don't think using Pick 10 to secure a KPF would be a better option.

GC will whore out the draft next year, picks will be hard to come by.

But taking a KPF in the first round is no guarantee of success with that player.
