Pick 10 for Varcoe

You don't think using Pick 10 to secure a KPF would be a better option.

GC will whore out the draft next year, picks will be hard to come by.

If you could guarantee me a gun KPP player I would jump at it. But our last KPP 1st rounder is playing reserves football and as seen by the thread on the draft Rendell had Lobbe as pick 10 last year. So far he hasnt been overly encouraging. We also need gun midfielders.

A skillful small forward is certainly a glaring weakness in our line up at the moment. Douglas is a stop-gap option and Jacky looks further away from filling the void now than he did when he arrived. Hopefully he can get over his injury concerns and add to his 45kg frame over the summer.

I'd keep pick 10 though. One creative, in-and-under midfielder please, good with his hands.

I wasn't concentrating much either but Thompson said that Mark Blake wouldn't be missing. Stupid question by Watson because as if there was ever a chance he would miss but perhaps that was what you heard or did he say someone else wouldn't be the one to miss?

That could be what I heard Drummond - I was only half listening and thought it was Varcoe.

But I was only half listening. :)

Considering our record with 1st round draft picks is it better removing the gamble and grabbing a player who is proven?

Yeah, you're right, we should give up on first round selections.

No you were right, Thompson was definitely talking about Varcoe in response to a question about who would be making way for Chapman. Thompson categorically stated that Varcoe would be in the GF team, barring a freak virus, heavily implying (but not naming) that someone else would be making way instead.

Varcoe hasn't reeally justified his pick 16 status, let alone a big upgrade.

Bit of a harsh call though.

His 1st season was basically a write off, as he was still recovering from the major foot surgery he had and he only played a handful of games in the VFL IIRC.

2nd season, he forced his way into the side in a premiership year, and was one of the best defensive small forwards in the league.

He's gotten better this season, and last night was argubly his best game for the club so far. People talk about the impact Cyril Rioli has had in his 1st season, I'd be interested to see the stats b/w him and Varcoe.

He should end up in the midfield, and I look at him as a Chance Bateman type of player with better defensive skills.

Would you take a 1st rounder for Sellar if you were offered it right now?

Yes

Cats coach locks in Varcoe for decider

September 19, 2008 - 11:00PM

Coach Mark Thompson has guaranteed that Travis Varcoe will retain his place in the Geelong team for the AFL grand final after the young forward played an important role in Friday night's 29-point victory over the Western Bulldogs.

With star forward Paul Chapman rated a 90 per cent chance by Thompson to return from a hamstring injury for next week's decider, Varcoe had been considered the player most likely to make way.

But Varcoe made the strongest of cases to hold his spot with an impressive 18-possession game in the preliminary final, including a third-quarter goal.

"Travis won't go out," said Thompson after the 12.11 (83) to 7.12 (54) victory.

"Travis wouldn't be considered (for omission).

"I'll say that publicly, if he doesn't get a virus he'll play next week.

Obviously Bomber has a pretty high opinion of him

He really hasn't gone past potential. 28 goals in 32 games, hardly inspiring numbers from a small forward and a guy you're willing to throw our 10th pick at. Chapman is out, so who else is competing for his spot? Shannon Byrnes? Of all the positions in the Geelong team to crack, right now his is probably the easiest. And there's a chance he could make way for Chapman next week.

They sound like Douglas numbers for me and we already have one of those.

NC has already stated we won't be using our draft picks in trades.

I would imagine that would rule our pick 10.

In other words NO.

Except Varcoe stays on his feet, his tackles stick and he is faster.

Do you think Douglas would be lining for a GF birth with Geelong?

Ask yourself the question, how would Douglas look in that Geelong line up?

Some good ordinary player are made to look a shit load better in a brilliant side, just look at our 97/98 sides and our 05 team and some of the good ordinary players we had were made to look like world beaters.

I still question his ability to perform in a team that isn’t so dominate.

No thank you. He goes missing way way too much. I'd never give a first rounder for a "solid" crumber. He might end up in the midfield- might. If we want a crumber we can get one easily late in the draft. Most crumbers are taken late anyway- Stokes (Geelong & Hawks), Matty Campball, Lindsay Thomas, Davey bros. etc. There are a few exceptions of course but we can easily get someone as good as Varcoe late in the draft.

As a Centrals supporter I'd love to see him come to the Crows (and hopefully get a couple of games for Centrals as well - 3 would be nice :D).

Whether I'd give up pick 10 for him...I don't value him THAT much. Perhaps a second rounder, or a 3 way trade.

Unless Travis said he wanted to go to the Crows etc. I would't see a kid we have groomed for three years and who probably is on the cusp "becoming" being traded for another pick.We just dont give any kid the "5"
If you insist the Dangerfield for Varcoe. Thats fair both R1 picks , both young and unproven.

No, they won't. The main GC draft concessions occur in the 2010 draft, not 2009. The main issue with the 2009 draft relates to the AFL's decision to change the minimum age of draftees, effectively making it a 2/3 strength draft.

I've been a big geee for Varcoe - but not for pick 10 (especially this year)
Pick 28 - yes
I've previously seen him as that defensive crumber forward that we have lacked, however, i now believe that (similar to Jacky), he is better suited to a midfield/forward role. Perhaps even in the backline.

IMO it'd be similar to the trade we did for Bode, might get a solid player out of it, but a first round draft pick for a small forward in a strong draft is just a big no, especially when, more often than not, quality small forwards are picked later in the draft anyway.
