Prediction Pick 14/Draft Night Predictions

We are all reasonably happy with anyone who can run like the wind , deliver the ball lace out to Bruceeeee, PMac , Members and Roo .
Cant wait for draft day .
Been spoilt so far :thumbsu:

A sizeable mid.
Cant see Gresham or Ah Chee
Mathieson or Clarke

We have to take someone who is already a good kick. And I think that will be a focus given the comments from Richo and Co over the last year or more about getting in guys with skill.
Getting Webster, Billings and Lonie and Mckenzie playing midfield along with Freeman will give us speed. We need quality kick skill. That's why I doubt we'll go for Clark.

What about Bonner if he's available. Meant to be equally impressive from either foot...

I'll be happy with whomever we pick btw...

I don't think Mathieson gets to us... Tucker mite just.. Don't think Gresham is worth 14 and we don't need a back or utility type so reckon that'd rule out Collins, burton maybe bonner..

I think maybe just tucker, ah chee, Oliver, Clarke, Balic or partington are most likely

Balic is an interesting one. There wes an article in the Hun a couple of days ago and they were talking about him when discussing who might be taken around pick 5, so hopefully he'll be one who is gone by our pick (if we rate others higher).

I think there are questionmarks on his kicking and I think there would have to be some decent issue with him, for him to not be widely spoken about as likely to go in the top 15 or so, after his finish to the year, which was huge. Had a couple of 40 possession games (one with a couple of goals thrown in for good measure) and was then also brilliant in the finals. Is a good size, plays inside and out, is meant to be tough and competitive, has real speed and just runs and runs, so he ticks a hell of a lot of the boxes we're looking for.

Sounds like a taller version of Jack Steven, perhaps with similarly questionable kicking at times.

If Matho and Tucker are gone I'll be just as happy for us to call out his name as anyone.
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I want Gresham or Tucker, if not one of those guys then I would want Hibberd. At least if Hibberd isn't prolific he can still kick the damn thing well.

Know very little about the draft compared to others but I am excited by the prospect of Oliver. Appreciate the comments regarding not making Vic Country but also bear in mind that he body was not right the first half of the year. Watch the highlights video of this bloke, he is almost impossible to take to ground. This is such an underrated skill, as it almost always results in being able to get a handball off and set up play. Only the very best players possess this (see Ablett & Fyfe).

As a result he has the makings of an absolute clearance beast. I like that he is still carrying puppy fat similar to Cripps in his draft year, because it indicates to me he will get a lot more of the ball when he gets his body right. Look at the improvement we saw with Cripps once he got into shape.

If we don't get Oliver I want Tucker for his ball use. Seems to be very comfortable using his right boot also. Looks a very classy type to me, and you can't get enough good ball users.

I don't understand the Mathieson love either. Great that he is hard at it and everything, but comparisons to Lenny have me a little bemused. It is wrong to think of Lenny "just doing everything well, but not being elite at any particular aspect". People are forgetting the fact that Lenny had one of the sweetest kicks going around. By far the most underrated component of his game. Not only was Lenny's skills elite, his tackling was in a different stratosphere. No disrespect to Mathieson, but I would be pretty surprised if he has half the career Lenny had.

For the watchers does Oliver play like Wines or is he more explosive?
Yes like Wines with his strength and hunger but much more explosive imo.

Paige had him at 1st pick of the second rd in her first edition phantom draft. If he gets to 14 I hope we get him!

Her spiel on him..

A well-rounded midfielder who is deceptively quick on the burst from a stoppage. Won the Morrish Medal as the TAC Cup’s best player, but didn’t get an opportunity for Vic Country during the Championships. Has made serious inroads in the second half of the year to be a top 25 prospect. A contested beast with a thirst to hit the scoreboard, has terrific running power, finds the football with ease and is dangerous at the stoppages.

Cal Twomey's spiel..

Oliver is a unique prospect in this year's draft. The Morrish medallist is a tough and brutal midfielder who enjoys the harder elements of the game. But he also has some flair, enjoying going forward, taking overhead grabs and kicking a goal. In the final round of the home and away season, Oliver, who missed out on Vic Country's final championship squad, gathered 27 disposals and kicked six goals in a dynamic showing. There is plenty of development left in Oliver, who registered a 2.99-second 20-metre sprint time last week and was third overall in his agility run (8.11 seconds).

Knightmare's spiel..

Stoppage work – Oliver has excellent ability to win first possession, reading the ruck taps well and being in the right positions to get it. He enjoys from gaining first possession to kick long with a quick kick into the forward 50m to gain territory and on occasion hit a target when possible. In close he has clean hands. Wins the ground ball, can feed it out by hand to targets.

Contested ball winning ability – Oliver is a dominant contested ball winner and that should translate well to AFL play. He has the hardness at the ball, cleanness at ground level but then the size and strength over the ball to win the footy in close.

Tackling ability – Oliver is a strong tackler. He records high tackle numbers most games but critically his tackles stick and he really buries guys in tackles and attacks them with real ferocity.

Aggression – Oliver has a real aggression to him. When he bumps you, tackles you or charges at the ball with the intent to win it, he is going in hard and you’ll feel it. He’ll willingly hurt guys going after the ball. It’s just the way he is.

Scoreboard impact – Averaged more than a goal a game through the TAC Cup season (20 goals from 16 games) while playing primarily on the ball. Oliver is most comfortable and by far and away best utilised through the midfield but does have the ability as required to push into the front half.

Clean hands – Oliver has clean hands both below the knees and overhead.
Ball use/decision making – Oliver in traffic generally makes quick but good decisions and by both hand and foot is a reasonably clean ball user.

Rate of improvement – Oliver has been a big improver this season. He started the season slowly through the first half due to a limited preseason and he wasn’t selected to play for Vic Country through the U18 Championships. Things changed through the second half of the season where he was dominant through the midfield for Murray and showed continued improvement from game to game.

I seriously hope we don't get Balic... we need someone with precise kicking FFS. I like his style of play, but his kicking looks awkward and it's too loopy.

I don't know if that's something he can drastically improve.

the solution is simple

drug every other team with some acid, send them to a hypnotist and get the words "do not draft Darcy Parish" stuck in their brain

Pick 14 St Kilda: Darcy Parish. you beauty

guaranteed to work

I'd disagree re: Lenny's skills. He was a good kick under 40 metres sure, but he wasn't one of the best going around. Would say his kicking ability was like a poor man's Rob Harvey.

You know who can tackle like Lenny? Clayton Oliver!

I think recency bias plays a part here. Lenny's kicking definitely got a little more sloppy in his last few years. Watch some games from 09/10 you will be reminded how good his kicking was during the peak of his career. Lenny to Roo on the lead was a thing of beauty.

It was still good in the 11-14 years imo

Not as good as Harvey to Roo but very similar.
