Pick 14

I like him
PICK 17: FREMANTLE — ZAK BUTTERS

Clubs: Western Jets/Vic Metro

Position: Midfield

Size: 181cm, 70kg

Bio: The Western Jets midfielder had season-ending shoulder surgery after the Under 18 Championships, ending his season early. The zippy half forward can break the lines and win the ball in the contest. Butters isn’t an overly large ball-winner, but impacts the play and has the capabilities to hit up a target well inside 50.

In the mix: Ian Hill wasn’t on the original list of draft invites. However, is believed to have been invited to the draft meaning he could be in the mix for Dockers, but may not be their first choice. Vic Country pair Xavier Duursma and Ned McHenry are two other possible names.

I do too but have Sturt, Clarke and Jones in front of him as more realistic picks for us at 14.

I had to google Mick Ablett. As the WA colts football development manager - you would expect him to have a good grasp on the draft.

As for Crumpets sounds to me like he has been lurking around on our board.

Jordan Clarke will very likely be the first WA player selected and if for some reason still available at our selection he will be called out very quickly by Freo.

It would also be Mick's job to get as many of his boys drafted as possible. Could just be pumping Bobby's tyres.

Fox Sports Matt Balmer has us taking Butters.

Hill to WC at 24. Clarke to GWS at 10

Pffft those Fox guys are idiots. Why would we pick a skinny undersized mid with our constantly out-muscled midfield?

Especially when our mids get smashed for outside run.

I'm getting used to the idea that the player I want us to take will either be taken just before our pick or overlooked and go on to show great signs at another club, but they also sign a three year extension nearly right away.

When was the last time the media where remotely on the money this far out from the draft. Last 2 years they were still wrong the night before (wrong order last year)
I'd be surprised if any club other than Carlton knew who they were taking.

Brad Hill has been posting pics with 'Bobby' Hill on Instagram a lot the last couple of weeks (can't remember seeing him on it ever before).
Not sure that means anything - maybe he is trying to push Freo to pick him? Maybe he is just trying to get him more followers?
Who knows.

Not sure how we can get it done but would be handy to try snatching a second pick inside top 20. Only likelihood I can see any hope of doing so is that GWS may well be a slight chance to shift their third pick deeper for academy pick reasons - and the only club currently in top 20 that might budge with what we have to offer. Perhaps a mix of 31, 43 and/or future pick swaps could get us that very valuable pick 19.
Sounds likely that pick 19 this year (being such a fantastic pool of kids) is equivalent to a top 10 for next year. Personally would like to nab Hill at 14 and then reach in for one of the quality mids at 19 before the pickings are slim. Ely Smith or Liam Stocker look ideal to me but I'm sure other great options in that range would also be handy.

Yeah, I was wondering how much we would offer to get it. I imagine quite a few clubs would make the same offer though.

Yes. Plus this year the top ten picks represent only seven AFL clubs.
The difference is live Pick Trading. They might have had canvas all clubs to check on their desire to trade up. I doubt we will be interested as we have already traded down twice but somebody else might be. Gotta have a top 10 photo or maybe they just have a body double in blue spandex they can photoshop easily..

this, they had pretty much no clue what we were going to do last year

Yes, this could explain why Hill got a late call up. Not in the 7 clubs top tens, but in some others’...

Don't think GWS have any academy picks that they need extra points for this year. Certainly not those that would be bid on before the mid-20s. So I think they would want the higher pick rather than the points advantage.

The only real options I see to move up would be Sydney (26, Nick Blakey will be bid top-6/7) and Doggies (27, Rhylee West might cop a bit before then). No other teams above our pick 31 need points for the first 2 rounds.

What we could do is see what talent is available at pick 15/16 first. There could be a slider (who we rate highly) or our number 1 target such as Jordan Clarke available. If our main targets are gone (and we rate that next bracket quite evenly) then we could for eg swap with WCE (approx after bids) or Melbourne (who have two picks in 20’s). Ie. 16, 42 > 23, 26 (pick 42/43 might be a good academy pick for Cameron).

Giving us:
23, 26, 34

Yes you're probably right. Briggs not likely bid on til second round for GWS. Dont think a 26 or 27 pick is worth the effort to get hold of from Dogs or Swans. My only thought is that if we could offer up a mix to GWS for that 19 including a handy future pick, they may be tempted to swap and bank a pick or two for next year. Just depends on weighing their needs this year by the time that pick 19 comes around.
Of course, any live trading taking place prior to that might throw up other options. But I sure as hell would love to see us with another pick in the top 20.

Since we have some time to burn til draft, let's play a game. First to tell me which name is actually spelt correctly:

Brad Hardy
Byron Shammer
Jesse Cr$*^()(_)_()+)n
Daniel Pearce
Ross Lyin
Steven Hill
Hayden Ballantine
Jordan Clarke
Sean McManus

(Hint: it may be the longest one)
