Pick 14

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Since we have some time to burn til draft, let's play a game. First to tell me which name is actually spelt correctly:

Brad Hardy
Byron Shammer
Jesse Cr$*^()(_)_()+)n
Daniel Pearce
Ross Lyin
Steven Hill
Hayden Ballantine
Jordan Clarke
Sean McManus

(Hint: it may be the longest one)

Of course
It must be Jesse Cr$*^()(_)_()+)n

None are right.
Dunno what it's got to do with this thread though? :)

Just finished a Phantom for you guys on the Blues board. I've tried to go with high production types who have strong endurance bases, generally make good decisions and use the ball well.

Pick 17: Luke Valente - Balanced Mid
Pick 33: Jacob Kennerley - Outside Mid
Pick 44: Damon Greaves - Med Defender (Local Product)
Pick 68: Aaron Nietschke - Outside Mid/Med Defender.

Jason Carter I'd take as a Rookie.

not sure I would have any of those players.

Chris25 is a big fan of Damon Greaves and has argued that he is the third best WA prospect and at our third pick is arguably a bargain. Would be very happy with that.

I liked SmokingGuns reasoning on Valente (see the actual thread) and I can still see clubs considering him in the 15-20 range if they rate leadership highly. I personally would have preferred Clark or Sturt in the scenario that played out.

It is the right range for Kennerley but I have a question mark on skills and we already carry guys like Langdon. I would personally rather Tom Joyce, although Curtis Taylor was also on the board at the time and whilst I'm not a fan before 20 I think he is a bargain at the 30s and possibly a better option than Joyce in that scenario.

SmokingGun did some good writeups of his justifications; worth having a look.

everybody has a view and we won't know until the draft and in 5 years.

Valente is fine but I think that Cerra and Brayshaw are medium midfielder and I want either a contested beast or outside run.

Kennerley isn't for me. As an outside player I want elite skills and speed. Kennerley is average in both.

Greaves didn't impress me at the Champs. Also, not sure we need any more medium defenders. Rather, another midfielder or med/small forward.

Nietschke I really don't know much about him. Rather go a mature age player.

Sorry, we need much, much more scoring potential.

I’d spew if we took Valente with our first.

Can't see us being into Kennerly. The other two I think are decent picks. Anybody at 65 is a crapshoot although I think that list spot is reserved for Carter in some form.

I think we are more likely to take someone like Sparrow, Lewis or a "slider" such as Taylor or McHenry with our 2nd.

Knowing Freo with the bolters and sliders, it's on the cards. How many saw Logue, Brayshaw, as our first rounders?
Seems we always pitch the curve ball, Apeness, Sherro, Simpson, at least last year with two top five picks we evened the bets.

I wish they go with no brainer or solid pick than the left of centre.

Butnamw who you want them to
Grundy instead of Simpson.
Darling instead of Pitt.
Lever instead of Weller.
Acres instead of Apeness.
Glass instead of Brown.
Etc
select in this draft, not what has gone before. We can do nothing about what happened previously.
hind sight is a wonderful thing.

I think it's a pretty valid point. Our record with firsts in this kind of range (i.e. not top 5) is pretty diabolical. Thinking you are smarter than everyone else is great and all but when historically you've been proven wrong time after time it might be time to just pick the guy ranked 14 (or wherever our pick ends up) on the consensus power rankings...

Left of centre is probably the wrong term, well it was for me, but eastfreo75 is right in saying go for a more solid, conservative pick rather than the more high risk, high reward option.

I think we got it right last year.

This year it would probably be Clarke or Jones? Rather than Sturt, Caldwell, Taylor or Hill?

I think the only bad pick in that is Simpson, but even then, Grundy's career would have been quite different coming to us with Sandilands and Clarke already on the list.

The other examples for me aren't bad picks per se, although clearly history shows there were better options. Lever coming of a leg injury; I am fine with us preferring Weller. Pitt/Darling has been done to death, but in the end comparing any player to someone who retired due to health issues is a bit pointless. Acres/Apeness is a marginal decision imo, and Brown had a decent career.

The weight of numbers definitely indicates we can do things better, which is probably the main point.
