Re: Pick 36

Ahhh but I said need, not want ;)

I haven't seen much in the way of footage of him, if he's anything like what you've said Franky then fair enough.

Was more thinking if we could put both him and Jurrah on the park together, are they 2 very different players? I was under the impression they'd be playing the same kind of role?

Surly two Jurrah's is better than just one?

Would be interesting i agree, but i wouldnt say it couldnt happen, imagine one in each pocket/flank.....droool

Re: Pick 36

It completely depends on whether we feel we can get a player who could fill our needs to a good standard with 36.

If we don't think so, then yes we should pull the trigger.

Continuing on from Blackas87 point about our issues with clearences. Read an article over the weekend in hearld sun in their pick me series.

In the highlights reel just about %100 of the footy he won was contested. You may say we get Viney in 2012 draft but i think Woodward could play AFL next year and as Geelong proved on grand final day how important it is to have blokes willing to win the contested footy.

Re: Pick 36

watched him play the last couple of weeks. man... we would look much better with him in our side. he has a surprisingly good tank, doesnt stop working for the ball.

Re: Pick 36

Can this 'Jurrah clone' play as a small forward?

No - he is 195cm tall (not 191cm as has been reported). He is a tall, skinny, athletic forward.

Emma Quayle reported today that we have put a lot of effort into researching him and we are the most likely club to pick him in the first few rounds.

DRAFT NEEDS
It's time for the Demons to get moving. While Scully is an enormous loss, their improvement needs to come from within, given the hand they've held in the past few drafts. Clark gives them the big body they have been craving for the forward line, although he has questions to answer at his new club, namely whether he can play as the bona fide marking target they need him to be. If he can, then suddenly Watts, Jurrah and Howe will be able to get on their bikes and the forward line will look so much better structured. The Dees have high hopes for Bail, Evans and Nicholson around the midfield, and, after delisting Wonaeamirri and Maric, have faith that another rookie, West Australian Lawrence, can become their crumber, having taken some time to settle into Melbourne last year. The club has built depth and options in all areas and there is nothing it desperately needs in this draft, position-wise. Finding another key back to start developing would be a good move and a bit more pace around the ball wouldn't go astray either, particularly given that Jack Viney will arrive as a father-son pick this time next year and is an inside animal. Another thing to remember is that the Dees got two compensation picks for Scully. That will give them a shot at two excellent players in next year's draft, even if Viney costs a first-round pick, so they're well positioned to sit tight this time. Who will be there? They're going to have to wait and see as far as their first pick goes but if any club grabs Waylen Manson early it might be them; they've put a lot of work into him.

Re: Pick 36

Agree completely with what she said, I think we are pretty thin in the Key defenders area as Mcdonald and Davis were both taken late in the draft and havent really proved anything yet.

Also looking at that list some small defenders would be nice, but guess she hits the nail on the head really when she says we need to find the development within

Petterd
Bail
Gysberts
Strauss
Blease
Watts
Bennell
Morton
Jetta
Dunn
Mckenzie

At least 4-5 out of that list have to become B+ grade players , which is not to much to ask for considering how low some of those picks were.

Re: Pick 36

Keep in mind my vicious optimism but I reckon

Petterd - A
Bail - A
Gysberts - A
Strauss - B+/A
Blease - B+
Watts - A+
Bennell - B+
Morton - A
Jetta - B
Dunn - B
Mckenzie - A

Hahaha that's gold- I love the optimism Gaz!!

Petterd - B
Bail - B+
Gysberts - A
Strauss - B-
Blease - B+
Watts - A+
Bennell - B
Morton - B
Jetta - C+
Dunn - C
Mckenzie - B+

That's my best case scenario rating of where these guys could end up if all goes perfectly, and it's probably optimistic too. :D

Re: Pick 36

Draft is in 3 days! I thought I might just contribute some areas that I believe need to be addressed.

We need more grunt in the midfield.
Josh Waldhuter, Alex Woodward and Cameron Ellis-Yolhmen are all solid inside players.

Small forwards with electric pace.
Shane Nelson, Marley Williams and Brad Hill are all good options.

195cm+ Utility.
Although we are already grooming Fitz and McDonald into these roles, another tall will not go a stray.
Tom Curran, Jai Sheehan etc.

With the three lives picks we have, I am hoping we get one from each of categories I just mentioned.

My dream draft:
Pick 36: Waldhuter
Pick 52: Nelson
Pick 54: Curran

.... and this is assuming no one I rate slides!
Hayden Crozier is a chance and if that does happen (which I doubt)

Pick 36: Crozier
Pick 52: Woodward (Waldhuter will be long gone)
Pick 54: Curran

Re: Pick 36

I'm sold on Waylen Manson tbh. I love the name too... if that helps? lol! xD

But seriously, would love to see him live the dream lining up next to Jurrah. HOWEVER; I have not read much into this years draft, and I have no idea who is available, who's good etc. But after reading the article, Manson sounds promising. Either that or they just wrote it that way and I feel for it? haha!

I'm not, sounds like a risk of "re-drafting Wonna" proportions. The Eagles were depserate for him to play for Claremont for a season. He came for 2 weeks and then went back home despite their interest and support. Would be fantastic if he made it but we already have someone with X-factor oozing off him but who's struggled a bit with the defensive side to his game, do we need 2?

Re: Pick 36

^good point I guess. One thing I noticed about Jurrah this season though is that... he doesn't jump anymore. He like, NEVER goes for marks like he used too. He just waits for the crumb, and hardly ever gets it. Someone needs to tell him to FLY again! (seriously)

Pick 36: Crozier

This would be dream like, dont know if he can make it to 36......the hype is dying by the day though after that mark.

Has upside more than runs on the board yeah?

Re: Pick 36

Personally, I'd love to get one of Frost/Grigg/Waldhuter with our first pick.

If we got Frost, we'd have one of the most attacking backlines, but the toughness of a Grigg/Waldhuter would be hard to pass up. Ideally, i'd love to get a tough inside mid with a good kick and has pace, but extremely unlikely at pick 36.

Excuse my ignorance, but does anyone know what time the draft begins on Thursday night? Gonna have to listen via SEN, so want to get to the wireless on time!

Re: Pick 36

AFL.com's mock draft has us taking;

36. Melbourne - Josh Tynan
Height:
186cm
Weight: 76kg
DOB: 6/11/93
Club: Gippsland Power
Draft range: 35-50
Tynan is a hard-at-it defender-midfielder whose poise under pressure will really add to the Demons' mix in the back half. His strength overhead allows him to play on taller opponents, he has a good turn of speed and reads the play well. He's just the sort of player that new coach Mark Neeld will be keen to get into the club.
Watch Josh Tynan in action

52. Melbourne - Haiden Schloithe
Height:
179cm
Weight: 72kg
DOB: 16/6/93
Club: South Fremantle
Draft range: 40-60
Schloithe is a very quick half-forward flanker who absolutely loves to attack the ball carrier when not in possession. He registered 16 tackles in a colts game for South Fremantle this season with that sort of work ethic making him a very desirable commodity at Melbourne.

54. Melbourne - Josh Waldhuter
Height:
183cm
Weight: 84kg
DOB: 15/3/93
Club: Central District
Draft range: 45-65
Waldhuter is a tough, team-first mid who the Demons will find difficult to let slip despite not having added any tall timber at this draft. He gets after the ball carrier like he was born to do nothing else, but he also runs a sub-3s 20m sprint, so he's no inside plodder.

I think when you see the impact someone like Luke ball has had at collingwood and in particular in helping Pendles thomas and co real freedom, i think we need to do that in reverse order and take the punt on Waldhuter with pick 36, then Tynan and then Schloithe ( who looks like one of those that will slip to the rooky draft based on the fact that the nicest thing they said about him is he tackles a ****load, no mention on whether he can actually play footy)
