Who is the better tackler and defensive player, Hartlett or Ziebell?

If we don't get Hartlett, I'd go for the pacy Stephen Hill as one from left field and a bolter.

Everyone seems to have the same players in a different order for the first six picks and have it accepted as the order they'll get selected. :)

I'd really like to get Hill to Carlton but unfortunately I think he'll be one of the players that goes between our first and second round picks.

If he's around at our 2nd rounder I would take him, but I just think that pick 6 is too early to select him.

You are right in a sense that there's usually someone that comes out of left field to be selected earlier than expected (see: Boak, Pendelbury, Thomas) and that the top few isn't really set. I see Vickery as one that has bolted up the rankings but that's not to say there may not be another.

I was very impressed by Hill when I saw him, can find the ball with ease and is generally a good user of it, reminds me a bit of Dale Thomas actually. If we can get another top 20 pick from somewhere then we could do a lot worse than select him.

I think ant555's summary of Vickery on the draft board is fairly accurate. He is very athletic for a big man (200cm) and is very good at ground level. He's isn't one to kick often but it good by hands and is not afraid of laying tackles. As HBF said he is fairly potent up forward and would stretch a few defenses in a few years just like Hale is doing at the moment. His ruck work is very good, IMO broke even with Naitanui this year during the carnival. As ant555 said, i don't see any glaring issue that would stop him or endanger his chances of becoming a very good ruckman. He's been a bit of a bolter for mine, being very impressive at the right time of the year. I had him late-middle first round early on in the year because he was coming off a knee injury, right now, i wouldn't count him out of being picked up at number 1 to the Dees. Personally i don't think he is the best prospect in the draft (top 5 for mine) but apparently the Dees are very keen on him for obvious reasons.

As for his comparison to Kruezer, personally i see a fair few similarities, i think Kruezer is better by foot though.

Gilly, Jeremias, anything to add or disagree with anything?

That pretty much sums it up for me. One thing I'd add is that Krooooz's dedication and preparation for games and work ethic AFAIK is top shelf. Last year I saw Vickery a few times before he did his knee and he completely lacked intensity. Might have been just a case of a skinny bottom-aged ruck who was growing into his body, but I still see hints of that from time to time. SO relative to Kreuz he probably lacks the intensity and concentraiton over 4 quarters that Kreuz has.

actually i think Port will go for Vickery, so u guys might end up with Harlett.

Port are already loaded with skinny and stick skilled midfielders who can't tackle or get tackled easily.

I've been hearing this a bit lately. Could be a bit of a stretch to take Vickery that early. But hey, I would have said the same thing about Lobbe last year.

There aren't too many players that I can think of Gilly that are of Kreuzers size, that have the same desperation as him. His second and third efforts are amazing for not only a guy who stands at 200cm, but also in their 1st year.

Then take Ziebell and draft another player who can kick like Dew.

Because IMO there are safer options available at our pick.

I'd rather Naitanui, Watts, Rich, Hartlett, Hurley, Ziebell at pick 6 and we're guarranteed that at least one of them will be available.

So in saying that:

What question marks do you have over the top 6 .. and what question marks do you have on Hill currently - and why are they safer options ?

How have their post-championships form been like in comparison to Hill ?

I haven't seen them post-championship, you know that.

I'm basing this on what I saw in the champs.

Can someone give me reasons why we wouldn't pick Chris Yarran and seemingly undervalued as a footballer?

I see a Shaun Burgoyne/Mark Williams hybrid when he held his feet and outmarked McKernan.

Doesn't Carlton need another quick player who kicks goals and wins the ball?

Maybe we need to take a risk and pick someone with skills we currently don't have to catch or pass our nearest rivals. Drafting another one paced goalkicking midfielder with skill might be adding more of the same and not give us any more weapons in the big matches. We need a player who can win the ball and break open a game with two or three quick goals.

We've always been on the wrong end of that stick since, well forever.

Only saw him in one of the carnival games TG and thought he looked a little heavy and did not see any resemblance of Eddie's work ethic

There's a risk he could end up a Sampi, but Justin Cordy has our players match fit and running out games as well as anyone this year.

Sometimes the best available might not be the best fit for the team's needs.

I was happy when we picked Pfeiffer, but in hindsight, I don't know why we re-drafted Darren when he's a poor kick and a one paced inside player.

Even though Pfeiffer can kick a goal, he's a similar type of player to Bentick, Blackwell and Jackson.

I expected more from Pfeiffer this year.

Recruiting isn't this simple, but it appears we're drafting players with a name and a profile after we selected Pfeiffer, Joseph, Benjamin and Ellard. I don't know how Cameron Stokes slipped under our guard when Hawthorn snapped him up after Ellard. Ellard is a bit small like Blackwell and can kick, but he isn't as pacy as Stokes who is also a good kick, but has the pace to apply defensive pressure in the forwardline. I don't know if we're looking at the right types of players for our list when we've selected a lot of players who aren't great kicks or quick.
