If Laird was as good as people on BigFooty think then he would have been upgraded this year.

Perhaps, but this isn't the point I was making. Laird would have been upgraded if he was going to play. With another preseason under his belt, and one starting 22 player in Tippett gone, there is potentially an opening for him. All he has to do is offer more promise than the difference between pick 70ish and our final rookie selection.

However, the argument that he's unlikely to really demand a place before midyear, when we can upgrade him freely anyway, is a good argument. It would be foolish to spend a pick on him in that light.

so any idea what time we start watching/listening for pick 62?

very excited to see pick 62 :p

Well, Foxfooty are providing the red button option (Seeing the picks announced, instead of watching interviews with the top picks), from 7:12pm for pick 30 onwards.

So I'd think 7:30pm at the absolute earliest. Probably closer to 8pm.

Originally I was a little annoyed we were going out to dinner tonight, now I'm okay with that as the waiting around before our first pick would be annoying.

He sounds like a decent project player, but do we really need another third tall type player?
At just 72kg I'd be worried he will do a Bruce Reid.

Third party deal with Scotch tape?

What about Josh Waldhuter he was talked about a bit on this board in last years Rookie Draft ?

I hope we pick up Dylan Clarke, Corey Chalmers, Coleman-Broome or Shaquille Mckenzie. Tim Sumner or Tipungwuti my second preferences. Hartiman as a tallish forward a favourite of mine.

Pick 81 Ben Rioli if he is still around.

Aren't we required to give all draftees a minimum two year contract? If so, what happens if the players available to us with our second pick aren't worth it? Would it be advantageous to upgrade Laird and spare ourselves the costs associated with having a player we don't expect to make it on the list for two years?

We can't. If we were going to upgrade Laird then we had to lodge the relevant paperwork at List Lodgement 2, which was a week ago.

If they wanted to upgrade him they had plenty of opportunities to do so. They chose not to do so. Presumably because he's not as good as he is comically rated as being on BigFooty.

Or we already have a good player locked away on our rookie list and think a ND pick is better than a rookie pick. We only needed to upgrade Laird if he was a very good chance of playing before R12. Nothing to do with how good a prospect he is. He went blow for blow with Crouch this year in the SANFL. Smaller stature admittedly.

It will be interesting to see what we do with our lone rookie pick!

We are a fair way back but it will be interesting to see our strategy. Do we go with a bit more mature player from state league or do we go with a long term project.

I wouldn't mind picking a young project ruckman like Darcy Fort if he is still available when we pick!
