DESPITE winning the premiership, Collingwood will be in the unusual position of making a significant cut to its list, turning over almost a quarter of its players.

A decision on the final number will not be made until after several veterans have revealed their plans for next year.

The club expects that the number off its primary and rookie list will run into double digits and could be as many as 12.

Jaxson Barham, Jarrad Blight, Ryan Cook and Anthony Corrie and rookies Jack Carter and Tristan Francis have all been delisted.

To quote Bristler, Wowee

Saw Blight wandering around in the concourse crowd about 30 minutes after the final siren. Just near the winners circle. Was in his full team gear, looked like he was really taking it all in... wonder if it's been decided in the last 24 hours.

If that's correct, and you add O'Bree to the list of delistings due to retirement, then we have 5 spare spots on our list, don't we?

Or does Jarryd Blair need to be promoted permanently?

I'm a little shocked by the Blight decision, but he was pretty bad in the second half of the season at VFL level, especially when Rookies like Young and Keefe were out performing him on a weekly basis.

Blair needs to be promoted, Dunno what the plan is with Reed and Young will come straight onto the list so the leaves only two spots with two rookie promotions.

Maybe Marty is coming back.

Also rejected St Kilda's request of Blight + 30 last year only to delist Blight this year.

Didn't really make a difference.

No mention of Rusling? He hasn't "technically" been delisted yet.

And yes I know he has retired, so that would add to the "open spaces" wouldn't it?

Blight delisted. Was not expecting that at all. Surely he had enough currency to be traded!

If true an interesting decision.

I certainly thought he might have been a nice player to have as a trade chip and if it meant adding a Sherman or another forward I would have looked into this.

Would wait until trade week to make that call anyway.

With this many changes (if true) means likely a few rookie promotions (Blair, Keeffe, Reed) and possibly even Hunter who while unlikely also had a good season.

There are some players who could prove to be good rookie pickups and with the Irish boys and possibly some NSW/ACT boys coming along if the club likes them, such a large list turnover isn't such a bad thing even though it might sound bizarre to some.

Already confirmed to be not coming back I'm pretty sure.

Am I the only one surprised we delisted Barham?

I'm not surprised by it but I would have given him another year. Big fan of his game and he had a great 1st half to the season. Really surpassed expectation. We have to remember he was a late starter, then his first season was ruined by injury. So his development has been very fast.

Would like to see him receive another chance at another club if true. Could be a handy role player.

Im glad they delisted Barham.
He just does not have the football smarts, or the skills or composure to cut it.
He has potential but I think the coaching staff recognised that it would be a long battle that may never be won. Doesn't have the natural talent to build on.
He does admittedly read the play well enough, and has good speed and balance to get a lot of the footy, but without the ball skills to dispose of it well he's too much of a liability.
Good luck to him regardless, hope he can turn it around and have success, when he builds himself he might be able to play a Luke Ball type role for another club.. just not us.

Barham could be a good fit for st. kilda. Quick and can't kick- Just like Brett Peake. The only differences are that Barham can find the footy and can lay a tackle.

Pretty surprised we delisted Blight, there was a bloke raving about it in a thread on the Freo board about 5 days ago, I just thought he was deluded. Looks like he had good mail.
Surely he had something to offer at the trade table, if not for us in the AFL? I thought he looked great at times over the last 2 years, he had brilliant vision and a raking boot. Definitely soft though, weak tackler and lacked an edge going for contested ball, but I thought he had enough to work with.

Not surprised about Carter though, I said about a month or two ago we'd see a Tobias Thoolen situation with him in that he'd be delisted in his first year. Didn't see the appeal in him at all personally.
Same for Barham, he was always destined for the scrap heap.

I think Medhurst and Anthony will sign back on, can't see the club letting Anthony go, we've got no KP depth if he moves on. Think there will be a bit of space in the cap now as well to encourage him to stick around and not get tempted to nick off.
Cloke, Brown and Goldsack should all sign back on in the coming days you'd suspect.

So thinking through it;
Delisted: Barham, Cook, Blight and Corrie + 2 rookies in Francis and Carter
Retired: O'Bree and Rusling

That's already an 8 spot turnover there plus I think Fraser is a certainty to move on, so 9. You'd suspect one of Presti or Lockyer won't go again, I initially thought Lockyer was hanging 'em up but I think he might be buoyed by how close he came to playing in a premiership this year and might go round again.
Presti might call it a day, he is too selfless to go round again just for his own benefit (i.e. a premiership). I think he'll realise it's the right time to hand the reigns over.

Leon will be retained purely because we can't trust in Brad Dick's body holding up.

I'm not ruling out Marty returning yet either, I think the club/he might be foxing a little bit.

Nup, he is just another kid nominating to be drafted now (assuming he throws his hat back in the ring, which you'd suspect he will).

I reckon that rule needs to be changed. You should still be able to trade players that you are planning on delisting. AFLPA should look at it. Increases the player's chances of keeping a job.

Dumb move by the Pies unless he came out and said that he doesn;t want to play anymore. Freo would have taken him for Tarrant- or something close.

We didn't have to delist him yet though, trade week takes place before the last list lodgement day. We obviously just thought we weren't going to attract any interest for him or that the pick/player we received wouldn't be worth using/having.

He could have been a sweetner if we were looking for anyone over in the West. A local WA boy returning home who could develop into a very good footballer and play for 10 years may have appeal. If we do want Taz, then I think he could have been used as part of the negotiation.

blight going is pretty big news, many on here rating him massively and he played some great games last year in the VFL

surprised we would do any delistings before trade week, it's always worth having some steak knives if another club can see how a player would fit a required role.

also find it interesting for both carter and blight that if the club wasn't happy with them or their progress, and they originally thought they had talent, why not try them in a different position in the VFL? I know we wanted to win, but putting a blight on the wing or carter at FF couldn't hurt to see if they had some go.

oh well, the club would know the players strengths and weaknesses i guess, looking forward to trade and draft period

also...footnote...if we lose anthony for some hack i will be mega p!ssed off!

The club clearly didn't think so. I'm surprised as well, but I guess they are in the best position to make the call.
