As much as Steinberg has improved out of sight in the past 18 months, Im not completely sure he will become an AFL standard defender. He probably isn't nimble enough to go with the Mark LeCras, Stevie Johnson types, whilst he would get run off his feet by the more mobile third talls like Jack Darling, Jack Gunston etc.

He is defensively sound, however, it is one position we have a plethora of options. Kicking can still be an issue and he he doesn't offer a great deal offensively.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Steinberg go either way (Delisted or Upgraded). The draft sanctions probably fall in his favour as he is a known quantity and a better bet than say draft pick number 102 (or whatever it would be).

Good call on Alwyn Davey being delisted. If the rumours are to be true and Chapman is coming to Essendon, then it could smell the end for Alwyn Davey.

If your outgoings are on the mark then acquiring at least one ready to go KPP (forward or back) is a must, even for depth and insurance. Losing Crameri (>WB), Gumbleton (>Freo), Hille (Retired) and even NatRat (Retired) was useful in plugging holes in KP posts.

The rookie list is where the list changes is going to be IMO. Dell & Steinberg the main list management questions.

Would you go 3 draft selections and one rookie upgrade or 2 draft selections od one rookie upgrade /

My ideal off - season would be

Hal Hunter (Rookie Delisted)
Corey Dell'Ollio (Rookie Delisted)

TRADES:
Stewart Crameri (to Bulldogs for pick 22)
Scott Gumbleton + pick 62 (to Fremantle for Viv Michie or Josh Mellington + pick 51)
David Myers + Travis Colyer + pick 22 (to Melbourne for pick 2 - is a pipe dream but one can only hope)

INS:
Viv Michie/Josh Mellington
Paul Chapman (Delisted Free Agent)
Pick 2 (Best Available - James Aish? yes please)
Pick 44 (Ruckmen - Rory Lobb/Cameron Conlon)
Pick 51 (Lauchlan Dalgleish rookie upgrade)

He is number one on my list of four older players followed by Shaw, NDS and Chapman.

Who is your first choice ?

It really doesn't matter but you've been critical of signing someone like Sylvia as a free agent but the refusal to trade out players for upgrades. If you accept that Sylvia is as good a player as Freo's interest all but confirms, and that Montagna is your first preference, it destroys the rationale of your post (because it is largely about two individual players).

I have no preferred targets, of those mentioned and those who are realistically available, as long as it involves the movement of best 22 players especially those entering the primes of what are likely to be very high quality careers.

I'd sign free agents because we get the immediate impact without losing the long term benefit.

I'll revisit in a couple of years when the list has a better spread of veterans, quality mid aged experience and youth.

Just making sure people didn't misinterpret that as racism

All good mate, speaking from aboriginal background I knew exactly what you meant & to be honest you beat me to it, I was going to say the exact same thing!! Haha My prediction is he lost a bet? That's the only reason you would do such a thing!! :thumbsu:

Pick 40 something??
Pick 51 (Ruckmen - Rory Lobb/Cameron Conlon)
Pick 80 (Lauchlan Dalgleish rookie upgrade)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought there was a rule that you cannot trade a player that has re-signed in that same season? Or was that just a load of turd that I heard? (No rhyme intended....)

Also don't we currently have our 1st pick in the 40's there somewhere? Not that it would make much difference but just that I didn't see it in your trade scenario's anywhere?? Cheers

It's true, and it's also an incredibly ****ing stupid suggestion given Colyer re-signed less than 7 days ago.

I swear this time of the year makes people forget how to think.

You are correct (re Pick 41 as our first live pick).

The 'rule' you are reffering to was a load of bollocks I thought, was a rule implemented by someone at Essendon but not the AFL.

I was listening to Ben Niall (I think that's his name), Heath Shaw's manager, on Friday afternoon, and he was talking about the various places Shaw could go. He was talking about some places depending on other trades to go through in order to work out a trade with Collingwood. The obvious interpretation is GWS with Adams, but I don't think that's the case, given Shaw and Adams would be the deal meaning it doesn't need to go through before Shaw's future can be determined.

My interpretation was that Crameri needs to go before we can do a deal for Shaw, and I suspect our demands of the Dogs are based around Collingwood's demands for Shaw.

That's also my take. I think pick 22ish is not great, but not atrocious either so if there wasn't something on the other side of it, it would already be a done deal.

I wonder if the Pies would take 22 + 33 or whether they'd prefer us to try and package those two for whatever we can get.

Clark reporting the Chapman would be on 250K a year.

******* bargain.
By the sounds of the situation at geelong it wasn't a money thing, he just wanted to play football and felt insulted being offered only 10 games and I would guess it didn't include playing finals also.

I am critical of signing players ( whether free or traded ) that will add nothing to the team and who I doubt will be best 22 - read Sylvia. For me its the suitability of the player not because he is free 1
