Being a Tasmanian, I've been hoping someone would recruit Ben for quite a while. From memory, I think he did his knee in his draft year and every club consequently passed on him. I didn't see him play this year, but I've always been impressed with his mobility and he's very clean and agile at ground level. He can pinch hit in the ruck and he'd be a valuable option up forward if we do indeed lose Crameri and Gumbleton in the one off-season.

Mitch Thorp played a blinder of a state league season for South Launceston also, but the quality of the competition is two or three steps below that of AFL. He'll get a second opportunity no doubt but it'll be interesting to see where he lands in the draft.

I would have thought Thorpe, or at least someone who is immediately capable of playing as a third tall forward, is a necessity for us in the event that we lose both Crameri and Gumbleton. Our KPP depth will be gone in the next 12 months.

I seriously can't believe Geelong let Chappy go.. so f**king happy!

Is EXACTLY what we need in the forward line..

At the start of trade/drafting we identified the biggest need was a small forward.. and hello Mr P Chapman.

I agree that Chappy could be a 1+1+1+1 type player.. works hard in the gym and is a true professional.

Can't wait to see him kicking goals for EFC

I am so happy :) :) :) :)

I'm a little skeptical about the Chapman signing. Something doesn't add up. He shredded the last game he played in a sudden death final and is supposedly fit enough for us to sign him for two years immediately following Geelong's decision to moved him on (when it seems that the fear of them overrating their list has manifested itself in them probably overrating the VFL squad).

Happy that we have his quality around the place, even if it is just in the change rooms, but I'll probably only be thrilled in hindsight. Hope it happens.

Wait. Who said it's official?

It was just announced on SEN. Not official yet, but I'm expecting the announcement later today.

I think Scott wants to move on to "his" team with a much younger group. Think a cross between Dean Bailey/Nathan Buckley except with a really good list.

I think it's disgusting from Geelong. Players of Chappy's ilk deserve to play until they say no more. I hope the Hawks start flogging them every time they play now. It'll be a poignant reminder 2 or 3 times a year of why players of Chappy's quality and more importantly loyalty (think how much coin he turned down by driving the "stay to win" culture) deserve the respect of retiring when they see fit.

It will be done today or tomorrow.. I'm hearing from four or five different people that it is done... bar the Press Release.

I seriously have no idea why Geelong let him go.. it was an odd decision.. I truly think Chappy will make them rue that decision next year.

However Geelong is trying to avoid the 'Carlton Cliff' situation.. where you hang on to old stars and then they all leave in a huge bunch and it destroys your club for the next 10 years... so they are trying to stagger the old guys leaving.. 2-3 a year.. so far it is going pretty well.. this year it is Corey and Chapman

Next year I would imagine that guys like Bartel and Enright that say goodbye.

Also Geelong DID offer Chapman a contract.. but they told him that it would not be a full time starting position.. that he would essentially be 'managed' to give time to a younger bloke.. and Chappy said "F Off".

So rumours that Geelong 'knows' something are false imho.. look at that first final performance of Chapman.. and smile, smile, smile!

It isn't just the money he turned down either. It seems that Chappy was instrumental in driving the development of the culture that kept their incredible list together.

It is so difficult to see Geelong get something like this so wrong. My head accepts it but my heart is struggling.

Cannot wait to see him shrug off three opponents and snap truly from 35m in the red and black.

Couldn't agree more.. I really think it is a dog move from a club that asks ALL these guys to stay for 20% (or more) less than what the open market could pay..

Their loss is our gain.. but I hope we don't treat our champions in this way.. aka the Lloyd stuff up.. a guy like Chappy should have the option OR be told he is in the team until it becomes clear he has to go..

I mean you look at his last performance.. one of the BOG's and then you get told "nup sorry not interested??"

As a FA pickup, in an area of the ground we have a noted weakness I think it's well worth the risk. We can still stock up in the rookie draft, and off field he'll be a great influence.

Well worth it IMO.

so Freo apparently not prepared to part with #33 for Gumby.. so SA teams become an option..

Also I think only teams looking at Shaw are GWS and EFC, Carlton has cooled after a busy start to the trade period.

IF we could get a pick in the 30's for Gumby.. then I definately think it is worth putting 22+33 together for Shaw..

Shaw rotates with Dempsey on the Wing.. works nicely for me.

I also don't mind the thought of picking up two A graders in one trade period!

This is perfect. Geelong wanted to move him on as they have 3-4 younger small forwards that they would rather play. He will fix one of our pain points. We were crying out for a small forward.

In other news : I'm ok with losing Crameri to the Dogs but I would be hopeful we can keep Gumbleton. I wish the Joey rumor was true. He is a gun player.

I'm NOT interested in Bernie Vince. I hope we don't chase him.

From a cats supporters point of view I disagree.

The main reason we have moved on 4 over 30 year old players chapman, Corey, hunt , podsiadly is that there is a list squeeze at geelong and if we kept them and probably only chapman deserved another year then one or more of our talented 18-22 y.o would walk out and that makes no sense to keep 32 year olds to push out 20 year olds.
Especially when our coaches have been saying all year there is about 10 guys who could be playing afl in other teams.

Anyway if it true you have landed Chappy he will be a good addition good luck for 2014 :thumbsu:

Chapman is in a completely different boat to Hunt and Pods (Corey went of his own volition). You'd be better off delisting one of your 75 ruckmen than Chapman.

Anyway, what's done is done, and we're the ones benefiting from it all.
