Just imagine how good it would have been had our picks been intact...

I'm really not sure it was a huge factor tbh.. we will never know..

BUT we were on track to finish, say, 5th for arguments sake..

So we 'would' have had #14, #34, #52 and #70 (leave out round 5+ as I don't think we were going to use it)

I think the club announced earlier it was happy with the list and not looking to trade a lot.. I think there is a strong strong chance that the names Crameri, Gumbleton and Jetta were probably the only realistic chances of leaving regardless.

Crameri was going to dogs.. they were never going to give up #4.. so most likely we would still end up being offered #26..
Gumbleton wanted Freo.. this is probably the only one where we *may* have been able to do a little better.. but probably not.. especially as Freo finished so high.. their picks would have been similar.. so not 'swap' options likely.. probably would have ended up with #55 (or third round) anyway.
Jetta couldn't find a home irrespective of what picks you put with him.

We probably would have offered #52 for Edwards and Aylett as it is materially the same as #48..

Sooooo

We would have come out of trade week as follows:
IN: Aylett, Edwards, Chapman, #14, #26, #34, #55 (which we wouldn't use)
OUT: Crameri, Gumbleton

So again, the 'cost' of the penalties is minimal really.. there is a cost.. but hardly earth shattering and I don't think it made one iota of difference to our approach to the trading period.

Hi folks I haven't read the thread so no idea how you regard the trade of Gumby to us.I'm happy that we have secured him and am pretty confident he'll be a very positive addition to our list and will be starting 22 once he finds his feet back in the west.
I just heard Cometti refer to him as Spud Gumbleton in a highlights package so I thought I'd ask the people who would know.Is this his nick-name?How come?
Cheers.

Read Jade's recent post history for an indication of the general feeling about Gumby leaving. I think you got a bargin, and we got a bit ripped off but whatever. It made sense for Gumby to move because he was behind a bunch of guys and you could offer him something we couldn't - game time. Gumby's nickname is Gumby, no idea why Dennis would call him Spud.

Compared to actual the only difference would be:
#14, and #52 instead of #55...

What you aren't taking into account is that we could have culled a larger number off our list and traded them for more 2nd round picks. But because we had to keep our list mostly the same there was no ability to get rid of some of the guys who are on thin ice. I reckon Hardingham, Colyer and a few others would have been traded this year if it weren't for the penalties.

Maybe.. I'm not so sure.. I think the club would take Hardingham over a 2nd round pick in this draft.. Colyer probably border line..

So not disagreeing.. but not sure that picks are always better than players..

We are heading for top 4/premierships in the next 3 years.. our focus is on now.. not really 5 years time.. hence why you would prefer Hardingham over a skinny 18 year old..

Thanks for the responses crew.Must have been Dennis trying to make one of his obscure jokes or something 'cos I'm pretty sure I didn't mishear it.Time will tell I guess but at least you have not lost a player who you desperately need.I'm not saying he was absolutely surplus to requirement but you are blessed with an embarrassment of riches in the big men up front department and if that wasn't the case I'm sure Gumby would still be an Essendon player.

You can have Gumby scon... enjoy him losing every single contested marking situation for the season.. oh and he is likely to miss at least 4 rounds with injury at one stage..

Some on here will mourn his loss (Jade - super BF love heading your way) but for the rest of us.. Cya later big fella.. thanks for the memories of having a #2 draft pick.. it was real fun..

Gumby's most valuable lesson was just how useless draft picks can be... and why teams down the bottom who try to rebuild through a tanking/youth only policy.. stay down the bottom.

I am, personally, hoping we never have a #2 draft pick again :)

Cheers rines, glad we were able to do you the favour and take him off your hands.Obviously I also hope that he proves you wrong but I ain't got no crystal ball.

That's harsh on Gumby. He hasn't been able to build strength because of his bank injury doing consecutive preseasons may improve him dramatically.

Don't you spend every preseason trying to convince us that half our side is tradebale for a pick inside the top 4 because the potential draftees are that good?

I'm really going to miss Gumbleton. Injuries prevented him from blossoming into the player we all desperately wanted him to be at Essendon, but I sincerely hope that his time at Fremantle is a success. After years of persistence, he deserves that.

In saying that, I hope it's not the ultimate success. I want some of that for our players instead.

You've got to be joking. How was the great Geelong side built? Hawks - Franklin, Hodge, Roughead?
Pies - Pendlebury, Beams, etc etc. How has Port turned it around.

1st round draft picks are crucial. Silly post really.

Slightly agree. We will overcome the loss of picks, the amount of talent we have picked up through the rookie draft more than makes up for the potential 1st round bust we have every now and then (in saying that weve been really solid these last 6 years)

We will pay the fine off, and we will be back in the finals next year.

The thing that hurts the most will be constant refering to us as cheats ableit without any actual charges.
Until a club is actually caught doping we will wear this forever...

Beams was a late 20's pick you might be thinking Thomas @ 2

Geelong was built on Bartel/Selwood @ #7ish and 3 father sons, 2 of which may be the best 2 f/s' ever

Agree, but its hit and miss with anything.
Anyone can use the argument of tambling, oakley-nichols, kepler bradley, dowler, cale morton etc
but i'm sure everyone remembers how that trade for mark williams turned out?? or that time we traded for richard cole...

Thanks for that, I'm sure no one wants to remember any of those trades.

Notions about our forward line strength are an illusion.
