Back to my usual dilema - who would you rather in your final/starting team? Birchall or Gram?

Yeah, tough 1 i think doing a few DT coach heads in.

Birchall = safety

Gram = Potential

Here's a tip....I'll pm you before lock out my choice and before to jump on the other as my choice is sure to flop...

Gram is in front IMO, so much potential

Pfft it's so close, they both have exactly the same upsides as each other

Im going for Gram simply because i think he has a higher ceiling.

You should pick one, and i'll pick the other. Hedge our bets! :P

A couple of back options I'm considering:
Mundy v Drum v Chris Johnson

Mundy moving into the midfield may be able to push his disposals up, very good durability. Drum has loads of potential if he can stay fit and Johnson showed plenty last year and moving to a new club is likely to get plenty of opportunity.

What are peoples thoughts?

Hmm, i think ive only got room for one though :(

Though, i spose putting birchall instead of newman could work for me - i think tigers are the next high position backline of the league (like the saints).

Probably a bit out of place in this thread, but since there has been talk about possible cheap forwards putting their hand during preseason, I thought I would mention a few "smokies" that haven't been given much of a run in the forums thus far (some would say would good reason).

There's a couple of cheapie forwards that will be worth keeping an eye on. Skipworth, although disappointingly worth close to 200k by the look of things, could be an option. If he plays well in the preseason, he could solidify his position in the team and if he does that, he will be hard to replace all year. He could potentially average 80 imo, particularly if he gets the go ahead to roam in the midfield.

Ben Ross is also get talked up hugely in the NM threads and is expected by all reports to get some gametime in the midfield. (151k)

I think Paul Stewart is worth a mention, although he would have to do something spectaculor during the preseason to get picked in my DT. I remember he racked up some big possession games in the SANFL last year and he is rated highly by Port. I was actually hoping he would be a back. A bit high at 200k.

If you like high risks, Nick Gill from Adelaide has had his first real preseason for years and could be considered cheap at 246k. He's actually been giving VB the hurry up in the 3km trials.

Like I said, smokies

I was wondering about a comparison between alwyn davey and skipworth earlier ;)

Both lack of AFL experience of late. I would think that Essendon has a role for Skipworth this season and Davey prob a little early to move into midfield yet.

Id go skippy, more seasoned.

Ryan Houlihan OR Patrick Veszpremi

Veszpremi, IMO, will play 20+ games. Mixed feelings about houlihan on carlton board though. Tarquin?

How do you think Veszpremi will play?

I'm assuming up forward but do you think he will be used as a leading forward? A crumbing forward? or one of the two with a spell of midfield time?

Micky O and Hall will both retire in next 1-2 years i would think. Whos going to kick goals for sydney then? Although i think leiws johnstone will spearhead the attack in the future, i think veszpremi will be required to kick 25-40 goals a season in 2010 onwards. IIRC, didnt he play midfield when he was younger? I would like to think, he'd play leading HF and also drift up onto the wing, but he is probably just as likely to play in the pocket.

Really like the look of him though. I do hope to get to a swans training sometime in the next month, but im not sure if i will - id mainly look at rucks, malceski and vespremi though, and probably goodes too.

Bump.

Enright vs Symes all.

Symes bit of a risk, but averaged 80 with only 90 mins average a match, while Enright averaged 87 from 107 mins a match.

Thoughts? Enright about 20K more expensive.

Brad Dick vs Sidebottom...

Who's ahead in the list here? Dick had 6 games of experience before doing his knee. Dick is cheaper as well.

Sidey, will play round 1. Looks to be the classy mid with a tank we have been craving. Only worry is size.

However if size is the worry then Dick will never get a game. Not sure what the story is but he was confined to being a boundary ump at the intraclub last week, so im guessing in this case, the extra dollars will be well spent.

Ive got one.

Coughlan vs Skipworth

Skipworth. Probably lower upside, but is definately going to get games IMO and doesnt have the same injury risk as coughlan (who has also not played much footy in last 2 years). If coughlan plays PS well though, and is named round one, then it would be a hard decision.

One is a forward, the other a midfielder.

Favourites, I read a quote the other day from a member of the coaching staff suggesting that Sidebottom is the kind of player you "want to get the ball into the hands of" (or something to that effect). What role do you see him playing, and what is the general consensus?

One unknown vs another. Wouldn't touch either until I've seen them play a couple of NAB Cup games to see how they're going.

Symes has a broken wrist/hand, so i would go enright.

Two of them, actually. He's obviously not the sharpest cookie:

Steeles role at the club cannot be compared to any of the old draftees at Collingwood because he's already running quicker and longer than the seasoned players, ie finished 1st on our 1st time trial of 09. In saying that he has also used the ball well on both sides of his body, so for me he will be used as a rover/hf

Don't think we'll see a defined role for Sidey. Might get to sneak into the centre for patches of game but we wont want to crush him. Probably see him spend a bit up forward and drift through the midfield picking up a few loose touches and tackles.
