As a bit of a keen gym goer myself I was watching the grand final the other day again thinking to myself 'i wonder what these boys do fitness wise to look the way they do' - obviously everybody is on a modified program to suit their needs however it's hard not to look at blokes like joel corey and chris tarrant and wonder where they get time to fit in weights around all the running/skills training they must do.

Anybody on the boards close to anyone in the fitness department? I'd love to get an idea of what some of the players do on a weekly or pre-season basis in the weightroom and on the track!

most of the weight sessions would be over pre-season. during the season i'd be surprised if they did more than one weight session a week. you'll notice how different players bodies look at the start and end of the season.

the most important thing would be that weight sessions don't impede on post-game recovery, or on pre-game preparation. so, it's likely that if we were to play on say saturday that the first three days after that would be dedicated to recovery followed by a weight session on tuesday or wednesday

that's where 6 day breaks are such a disadvantage, as it often removes the chance for decent, hard training sessions in the middle of the week

i think that got a bit off topic. basically you'd do a big pre-season and during the season you'd work big weights sessions around recovery, light weight sessions during weeks with a short break, and that coupled with actually playing the game would be enough to maintain it throughout the season

The reason Corey and Tarrant look the way they do as opposed to other players is more specifically to do with low bodyfat levels rather than the training they do - Yes they still need to lift weights, do core work, plyometrics etc. etc. but it's that ultra-low bodyfat that makes them look more chiselled than other players. Maybe try to contact a club nutritionist and ask about their diet?

the oldman use to be a gym instructor and I often asked him the very same question Berserker has asked and you pretty much summed it up.

They do all the heavy training in the pre-season and ram up their diet taking in all the fatty 'good' foods like chicken, pasta's, nuts, olive oils, etc and pack on a little more weight and then hit the gym's hard.
Most of the players are on individual weight training programs and you'd find that the older players wouldn't need to do much in order to gain optimum condition.

Wouldn't have a clue what they do during the season but you'd assume they would still do at least two weight sessions a week but they would be aimed at less weight for much higher repetitions per muscle in order to keep tone and body fat at the required measurements.
Yoga & Plyometric training would be one their most important fitness routines.

Genetics play a major part in why some players look the way they do but ye' Corey & Scarlett are freaks and Hawkins too has the biggest shoulders at the club and he's only going to get bigger and stronger which is a scary thought for opposition defenders:)

and am pretty sure the players get their own food supplied by the club. Very strict diet with only a few pleasures allowed every week.
Most weight lifters watch every single food they put in their mouth and drink nothing but water day in and day out.

I was thinking late in the year we started to look like we were in the preseason again. Couldn't help but think they increased the strength program mid year as the playing group appeared to collectively gain mass. As a gym junkie myself you can't help but wonder. But who knows.

Can't imagine the club would be open to let you know how ,when and what either. Whether training or diet- that kind of thing just is big business in sports nowadays.
