Player Mentors

Came out in the numerous Dangerfield stories today that van Berlo is his mentor (which i think was a great choice by whoever made it).

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into how this works... does the club allocate the mentors? Do we know any other mentor pairings?

i think i read somewhere that Richard Douglas is Tony Armstrong mentor as they are both from Assumption College in Victoria but Andrew McLeod may also play a part in his mentoring as well.

Good topic – was just thinking about this topic listening to the Dangerfield interview on AA.

I think Radar is McKays mentor, both Victorians.

The pairing up of one new interstate player with another who has chosen to stay would probably be a pattern. I like that. Its a good practical way of helping with the home sickness.

Don't think its necessarily anything official that the club has done, I think some of the senior players take it upon themselves to help out some of the younger players and act as that sort of mentoring figure which I think is great for the development of the younger players.

That was part of an article on the AFC website i believe.

Was a good read. Definetely linked Dougy with Armstrong. Its a pretty good trend there. IMO, the best way to make young players hesitant to leave is to build the bond between them and their teammates. Having alot of kids in the team at the same time means they grow up in a footballing sense together, and tend to have that bond.

McLeods work with Armstrong is amazing from the sound of that article. The man is a valuable resource for our club far beyond just on the field. Hes a great example for others to follow.

Good stuff, I imagine a lot of clubs would do it.

It helps them feel at home and gives them the opportunity to talk to someone who's been through it.

Good to see the club puts some thought into the pairings too.

Pretty sure Goodwin was Bernie's mentor last year and not sure if he still is.

Actually, come to think of it, I think Walker may have worked with Goodwin over the preseason to help his fitness, or am I remembering that wrong?

I really hope that whenever Goodwin finishes up with the Crows we keep him on in some capacity to work with the kids. His ability to keep his fitness elite alone is worth keeping him on for.

I vaguely recall in the jumper presentation videos that VB was one of the guys that presented a jumper. Perhaps the mentors always present the jumper nowadays?

Edit: If so, I think this would Otten's mentor Rutten, which is another good choice :thumbsu:

That could just be a leadership group thing...

Yeah i thought i also read that. After reading stiffy_18 quote – i wasn’t 100% sure it was Bernie Vince (may have been as well as Walker) but i was pretty sure a big name younger stayed around to improve his fitness with Goodwin. Now you say Walker, this makes sense.

i was under the impression the jumper presentation was a senior leadership thing, not a mentoring thing.

You're probably right, it's probably senior leadership group thing.

I'm pretty sure it was Walker who worked with Goodwin upon further reflection. I vaguely remember making the comment that he was both physically larger after doing a solid weights training program in the preseason, and significantly fitter after working alongside of Goodwin. I think my comment was something along the lines of "there is literally not one thing I've heard about Walker that has made me think that he is doing anything less than everything possible to succeed in 2009", or something like that. Anyway, I think that's right :o

For those trying to keep track Goody has worked with:

Knights in the 2007 pre-season
Vince in the 2008 pre-season
Walker in the 2009 pre-season

Notice the phenomonal rate of improvement the first two showed in their years directly after spending the summer with Goody.

That's captaincy:thumbsu:

on a side note, i noticed Patty Dangerfield was the first crow on the scene when Scott Stevens got cleaned up. He stayed with Stevens on his trips to Adelaide last year, not too sure if it extended into a "mentor" relationship however.

Nah that's just good old fashioned bromance

I'm pretty sure Radar is Petrenko's mentor.
Goody was Radars (well Goody took Radar "under his wing" when Radar wanted to go home after his first contract ran out and pretty sure Goody did the same thing with Vince when Vince wasn't putting his all in)

That really is impressive. Either Goodwin is cherry-picking the best young talent, or he is phenominal at bringing out the best in people. Perhaps both! ;)

That might be a great point for people who have questioned his captaincy. We often fail to appreciate the leadership a captain can show around the field, not just on it. This is more important with a younger list.
