Playoff seeding changed

I know Mr Stern changed it at the end of last year, can anyone explain the changes to me. Thanks.

The 3 division winners plus the team with the next best record are giving the top 4 spots. The rankng of the top 4 spots are then based on regular season records.
So last year the west would have been
1. San Antonio
2 Dallas
3 Phoenix
4 Denver

I think the Division winners getting the Top 3 seeds should be abolished. It should just go by the team's win loss record.

Imagine the Top 8 seeds being like this after the end of the season with the current seeding placings

1- Detroit (62-20)
2- Miami (60-22)
3- Philadelphia (42-40)
4- Cleveland (61-21)
5- Indiana (50-32)
6- Washington (48-34)
7- Chicago (47-35)
8- New Jersey (43-39)

That's just an example. Now that would be pretty unfair to Cleveland, and to any team from 5-8 who had a better record than Philly.

I was just looking at the current standings in the East.

It's currently

1- Orlando
2- Detroit
3- New Jersey
4- Cleveland
5- Indiana
6- Chicago
7- Atlanta
8- Washington

Now, if you go by the w/l records deciding the positions, here is the top 8 in the East

1- Orlando
2- Detroit
3- Cleveland
4- Indiana
5- Chicago
6- Atlanta
7- Washington
8- Miami

New Jersey isn't even in the Top 8, they have a 7-11 record, but because they have the best record in their division, they have the 3rd seed, yet Miami, which has a 7-10 record, miss out on the top 8.

The division leaders should not decide the top 3 seeds.
