Ablett got what he deserved. I think he created a lot of disharmony at the Gold Coast. His talent did not bring them together, it tore them apart. One the Gold Coast has a bad reputation that will take years to fix.

It's definitely all Gary Ablett's fault.

In hindsight it looks like a poor decision, but if the suns had prevented their players from getting injured so much they may have been extremely competitive. Huge money to go to what looked to be the most talented list in the league, he’d have been mad to turn it down.

I don’t think anyone could have predicted the absolute mess that Gold Coast became.

I think both perspectives are fair

Yeah. On the one hand, his CV speaks for itself regardless of the GC move - mutliple premierships, multiple Brownlows, stacks of club B&Fs, stacks of AA guernseys, 300 games, considered one of the all time greats to play the game, plus all the extra money. But then, imagine if he'd stayed at Geelong and added 2 or 3 premierships and maybe even another Brownlow to that equation? He'd be the undisputed GOAT. We'll never know though.

Being the greatest of all time is an individual accolade, counting the amount of premierships you have doesn't make any sense in that regard. In a premiership you are one of 22 that day and unless you are the best on ground it doesn't mean a hell of a lot. The fact Ablett 'only' won 2 premierships and went to an eventual garbage fire of a franchise does not diminish his standing as one of the greatest footballers we will ever see.

300 games, 2 Brownlows, 5 MVPs, 8 AA's, 6 B&Fs (2 in Premiership years), Guaranteed first choice Hall of Famer and guaranteed elevation to legend status is all you need to know about how good he is and was.

If he stayed at Geelong, Bomber Thompson might have stayed as well. They were kicked out of the finals hard in 2010 pretty hard by Collingwood and the cats president and ceo wanted to keep Bomber. There were no guarantees that had Ablett stayed they would have won more flags.

By the end of 2010 it was pretty well publicised that their relationship was pretty awkward so I dunno how keen they'd be to stick around each other. Bomber was over coaching full stop at that point I reckon too. Didn't seem to affect Ablett's professionalism or performance, played one hell of a game in that first quarter belting by the Pies in the Prelim you mentioned.

Speaking of Geelong and onto a dangerous segue, but am somewhat surprised to not see this thread triggered with the news that Sam Siggins and Dean Gore have both signed with their VFL side for 2018 (though I probably skipped a few pages).

I'm pretty vocal in my whinging of obsessive Crows comparisons and banter that permeates the board, but definitely find the irony in that amusing.

Ablett’s decision looks bad (from an on field and legacy point of view) in retrospect, but I don’t think Gold Coasts struggles would’ve been entirely predictable.

If Gold Coast had a near competent football and fitness/medical department who knows how far they could’ve gone with their talent over the last few years. In my view this has been one of their main hindrances and one of the greatest differences between them and GWS. The amount of talented players they’ve had that have spent huge portions of their careers perennially injured is staggering.

So they all sat around garry Albert senior and prayed? It is ****** up in the gold coast

You are playing for the Suns. You need to find hope somehow. Prayer is a common way to do it: you thank God for the opportunity of being a pro footballer; you ask Him to bring light to the people running the organization; you plead for mercy from your opponents; you pray for protection against injuries; you beg for forgiveness for having accepted playing there; and, finally, you wish for a chance to play elsewhere. It makes a lot of sense... ;-)

Hahahaha hahahaha!
If by God you mean Ebert, it makes no sense as he’s retired.

Technically speaking, Ebert would be 'god,' with no capital letter. But, either as a Port's god or a Port's saint (depending on whether you are a Port Pagan or a Port Christian), Ebert still would be sacred for Port followers.

I am not sure why any Sun would worship him, as wrong as they would be... :p

A parallel universe where their midfield consists of a fit and firing Ablett, O'Meara, Prestia, Swallow etc. while at both ends of the ground they have Dixon, Lynch, Matera, Bennell, Day, May, Thompson while having players like Barlow, Hall, Nicholls, Lyons, Young, Hanley, Fiorini also at their service.

Premiership material right there.

Missed Jack Martin who I think can and will be one of the best players in the game.

Josh Caddy didn't achieve a hell of a lot there nor at Geelong but he'd be a more than useful player to have in their best 22 right now as well.
