They are still finals, aren't they? Call them "Preliminary elimination finals". The AFL would schedule a bye before that as well. And so on.

Are those finals? Not necessarily. It all depends on how one designs the finals; how they are presented.

Regardless of what you call them if they are not part of the H&A and the winner gains an advantage over the loser in the continuing finals then they are a final.

I thought about this last night but if Richmond win on Friday Night then no matter what, they get a non-Victorian team at the MCG in the PF.

Same for Cats then I assume? Please win Tigers.

Yes, just that the MCG factor would provide a more significant home ground and crowd advantage for the Tigers than the Cats.

Pity we were robbed against Cats, they have stolen our spot in the top 2.

They could be, but still bastard ones. The Top-6 would be resting, while the Middle-4 would fight for two spots into the EF. There would be an actual advantage finishing 5th and 6th, especially for Victorians. Today, there isn't much.

As I posted early today, having this additional week of finals further disadvantages the teams that finish 7th and 8th while adding two more teams to the finals, 9th and 10th. There is already a significant advantage to finishing top 4. If having a pre-finals bye has diminished this advantage simply get rid of the bye.

As myself and El Zorro have already pointed out the AFL would also need to introduce a bye before this new week of finals. This would mean that the teams finishing 1st to 6th would get two bye weeks after the H&A finished. Other than dragging out the finals series an generating more cash for the AFL I fail to see what purpose this serves.

  • As Harry became older he became more aware of the casual racism he had encountered in his life and how this had made him insecure as a person
  • He had a team meeting with the Collingwood players and explained these feelings to the team and his personal insecurities. He expanded this discussion to include other repressed minority groups including homosexuals
  • A couple of weeks later some comments were made in a team meeting, throwing the term 'lesbo' around. Buckley made a point of singling Harry out and asking him in an aggressive and sacrcastic manner what he thought using about this term and basically belittling him in front of the group. Just a couple of weeks after Harry had laid his personal securities out there for everyone to see.
  • Harry went for a walk, then went to Nathan's office and ripped into him. It was very ugly.
  • This was on top of the Collingwood supporter who racially abused Adam Goodes then barely weeks later Eddie made those incredibly insensitive comments about Adam Goodes promoting King Kong. And Harry publicly called Eddie out about it.
It's hard to convey emotions in dot points but you could see how much it affected Harry. It was clearly a distressing situation for him and not well handled at all by Collingwood.

On the other hand he spoke highly of Mick Malthouse's sensitive approach.

If there was ever a template created for the Aussie Alpha male, blokey bloke, I'm sure Bucks would be a significant contributor.

If they can beat Geelong then GWS/Port/WCE are going to find it really hard to top them in a prelim.

But that scenario plays out nicely on the other side of the draw - Sydney to face their bunnies Geelong in a semi before the poor old Crowies host a prelim against a team who by that stage will have won 16 of their last 18 games ... :D

The one and only thing I don't like about facing the Tigers at the G in the PF is that the AFL couldn't say no to Richmond being in the GF.

Fantastic synopsis you could do this professionally and be better than 99.9% of journalists currently employed.

Isn't Bucks considered to be an aloof sort of character rather than a typical alpha male?
I've only heard good things about Bucks - I would believe his side of the story rather than Harry's every day of the week. I feel for Harry, obviously played while fighting inner demons.

Richmond last won a flag in 1980 and haven't even made a GF since 1982 so the if Richmond get to a Prelim against us the AFL won't be able to help themselves.

I'm sure glossing over his contributions to any conflicts, but that aside, doesn't appear Collingwood has ever truly gotten past 'blackfellas as second class players / people'. It's interesting that Port and Collingwood fan bases / clubs get compared, yet somehow Port was / is decades in front of Collingwood for having indigenous players and support for them. Perhaps it's due to SA having more outback players / larger indigenous player pool for our population?

Thanks for that. I think one of the things the documentary made clear was how these issues piled on top of one another in quick succession. It was a huge amount of pressure on Harry in short order. And this was a guy who was becoming increasingly aware of the racism around him from the time he was a child and his exposure through meeting the Dalai Lama and speaking at a UN conference into global health.

I think he was saddened too by having felt like he was forced out of Collingwood 1 game short of 200 for the club.

This popped up in my news feed today.

6 years ago today we took the 1st steps to make Adelaide Oval the home of AFL in this state.

Agreed, it was only the wobblers immediate predecessor to Eddie Everywhere, ie Alan Macallister, who came out with the gem that aboriginals needed to be more like white people, or words to that effect! o_O

Have heard it's in the Tredrea mould. If you're a hard trainer, live and breathe footy and whatnot you'll have a brother for life. If you're not that type of character you can find yourself naturally on the outer and perceive that as arrogance/aloofness.

Which would explain the high-profile fallouts both men have had.

"As long as they conduct themselves like white people, well, off the field, everyone will admire and respect … As long as they conduct themselves like human beings, they will be all right. That's the key.'' - Allan McAlister 1993
