I along with others were legit begging on this board for us to draft Jack Darling and we took Ben Jacobs. Freaking knew we wouldn't be drafting him after an article came out about what he did at a school camp.

The late Phil Walsh told a few of us at the Club 1870 event at AO in April 2014, why clubs were going to stay away from him, because they thought he was trouble. That school camp is only part of the story.

Darling strikes me as the type who would have gone home after a few years anyway, especially with the state of our club back then. I wouldn't sweat that one.

Darling is exactly the type of forward you don't want in finals.

When things are going well, he looks ****ing awesome. But when the chips are down and you need him to stand up, he'll be nowhere to be found. It's why I'm not concerned in the slightest about West Coast. They haven't been put under any sustained pressure yet due to the fact that they've played every legitimate contender at Optus Oval, where sides are permitted to train on the ground and so everyone gets their first look at it the day of the game.

That reminds me of a GF when Port played Glenelg, and in a pregame interview a reporter asked someone ,could of been Jack, "So how are you going to counter McDermott?". And Choco butted in and said along the lines "he gets lots of possessions but they go nowhere, we're not worried about him" Had to love Choco sometimes.

It was a problem last season as well, and nothing got done and it cost us a final. I wouldn't hold your breath on that

He has scored 20.6 in 11 finals and still takes 4 marks a game in finals, down from his average of 5.19. Jack Darling always looks to me to be one of those "bar-too-high" players who when he plays the inevitable run of poor games is slated as being not as good as his reputation. It's true that in last year's elimination final Jack Darling could have been accused of going missing as after those three goals by early in the second quarter he did just about nothing. But I have seen players do that against us quite often, the reason is generally swapping defenders, not that the forward has just magically fallen in a big hole.
