Lets put out some other incident types and compare how they are/were handled:

- Outside a pub, player king hits a bloke and punches him on the ground. Reportedly could potentially have killed him. Narrowly avoids a jail sentence.

- As a spectator at a non-AFL match, player makes an offensive comment privately to someone else and is overheard by a club official.

- Player is tested for drugs and fails. Player is tested for drugs and fails again.

- Player makes an offensive or threatening comment to another onfield. Comment recipient doesn’t want to pursue it further.

I understand this logic though I don't agree it's a particularly fair comparison.

But it leads me to a bigger gripe: why does this have to all be done publicly? Do it in the workplace and your boss might have words with you or wind up in front of HR. Do it on a football field and the AFL puts you on display for all to shame. A workplace reprimand doesnt get handled where everyone else can see it.

The only party that benefits from this is the AFL.

It’s interesting isn’t it. Illicit drug use can be swept under the rug but homophobic slurs can’t

There was a really good article by the New York Times where they surveyed players about fan interactions.

The overwhelming consensus was that fans have become absolute pricks since sports gambling became so easy. They have fans abusing them constantly for their losing bets.

Gambling is a poison to sport.
