yeah well they got 250 games and 3 premierships with Burgoyne. so they did extremely well to manage him like that, and used him brilliantly in finals and big games by plugging and playing him for many clutch moments. If we selected Daniel Talia instead of Andrew Moore, and Nathan Fyfe instead of Jasper McMillan-Pittard. Everyone would be saying we won that trade.
Maybe be a bit more ruthless and held onto 24 to select one of Jake Carlisle, Mitch Duncan, Jack Gunston or reach a bit for Max Gawn.
Mind you this is also actually a good example of a time when we could've actually drafted a Key defender with our picks, happily giving up the players we actually drafted. But 2009 is also kind of ancient history.
Also Burgoyne wasn't in his prime, he wasn't training at all so he could be nursed through games in the midfield. He only worked at Hawthorn because they let him mostly just swan around at half back while other players did the grunt work he needed to do at Port.
Hawthorn pulled our pants down in that trade.
I bet Collingwood aren't thinking the same about the Houston trade.
