News Port passes on Jaidyn Stephenson

I'm surprised they get paid at all, other than providing food and accommodation.

Some of them work full‑time or have paid arrangements with local clubs, so they need to be compensated. From memory, there’s also a legal requirement that they must be paid in order to be officially classified as an “employee” for insurance purposes, particularly if they’re injured while training or playing.

The baseline pay is a minimum of $1200 across the board, but clubs can offer more to stay competitive and attract players (as if the opportunity isn't enough).

This to me makes it less harsh on Stephenson. He came here and was given an opportunity to try out when no other club was prepared to offer this. It didn't work out but he was reasonably well compensated for his time here, and perhaps it has put him back on the radar of other clubs.

A few weeks ago twomey said port were likely to take Bob and leave a spot open for the mid season draft. Now port takes bob and zadow leaving a spot in the msd (mainly to scout for a ruck) I dont see the major shock. Collingwood and North fans were happy for stephenson to move on. He had a shot and others were selected. If afl clubs rate steohenson then he will find a new home in the next couple of weeks.

I understand your perspective for sure.

For starters, Port aren't ever going to drop to the doldrums of where North has been at. That's not going to happen.

Fwiw, there are zero concerns that Salopek is going to stay in Melbourne - he will be at Port irrespective of where they sit on the ladder in coming years. Player acquisition via trade and free agency is a weird alchemy of sorts that often doesn't make sense to us supporters - and dare I say it's not strictly a law to the AFL either. One only needs to look to the NRL's recent blockbuster move of Payne Haas to South Sydney for identical money he was on in Brisbane to make the point.

NWM's manager expressed interest in his client returning to SA and joining Port as far back as Octoberish 2024. Of course, things can change, and he's currently under contract with St. Kilda, but I won't be surprised in coming years if he returns to SA.

The mentality you're talking about is what the coaching staff and players need to have during the season, absolutely. However, there is the nuance of list management that requires the backroom footy department to see a greater perspective so they can set the team up for sustained success. It's why we've seen the transition to go much younger over the last 2 off seasons, reducing the minimal likelihood of bottoming out whilst accelerating the development of a number of players such that there is a clear window opportunity for sustained success in the coming years given the resources Port has available to them in the coming years via the draft.
I couldn’t agree with you more. I have no idea why people are so adverse to playing youth and building the squad up to be a genuine premiership threat for years. We don’t need to tank because we know the talent we are getting in.

It’s like Brisbane, they knew they had a crazy amount of midfield talent incoming so they could focus their attention on other areas. In 2-3 years all of our important players (sans Wines/Aliir) will be in their primes still plus adding incredibly high level talent. Thats when we should be targeting.

The reaction to passing on a fragile local league footballer is quite astonishing.

Would've been a good story, and I would've like us to take a chance on him, but gee whiz.
If you went back to before Hinkley announced he was leaving and Said Port would be strongly considering adding Stephenson they’d have a meltdown, ‘Hinkleys looking for his next sugar hit’.

The guy kicked 2 in an internal trial and played ok in a SANFL match sim, the 2 lowest intensity games you can get which are unironically his specialty.

The only proper and reasonable response is to delist Ramm.

Feeling a lot better about this decision now that we haven’t given that list spot to Clohsey. Still galls me that Watkins is on the list over someone with upside, but eh.

Think its obvious we are going hell for leather on youth and dont believe we have a premiership list. I think some big calls end of season, one will include Butters going but I think that is offset. I am excited either way.

I'm not too pissed off about Watkins being on the list. I'm not expecting him to break in and play a heap of games, but he obviously showed a good attitude and set high training standards through the SANFL. If he's playing games then we probably have an injury crisis, or he's earned it at the very least. Delisting Hugh Jackson should've told us Carr was going to prioritise work rate and attitude in his first off season recruiting, without the influx of talented youth at our disposal with lack of draft picks.

My guess is that the Houston trade in conjunction with Hinkley being on his last legs made them seriously reconsider where the list was at, and where they wanted to head going forwards. I think the list has the makings of a premiership list in a few years. They've stacked it pretty well with some really top end A grade talent, and will be adding plenty more in the next two drafts. The key is going to be seeing these players realise their potential under the new coaching team.

Carr has taken over the reigns and assessed the list and he would know that our best players are not in the 27-30 year old bracket and those players usually take you to a premiership.

The best players in the 24 and 25 year old bracket and so we still need to develop talent. Our centre of gravity should be on Rozee, Butters, Georgiades, Bergman and a younger Horne-Francis.

This year will be about instilling values, attitudes and the gameplan.
It will be also about who can fulfil the roles needed for that so there will be a pretty big cull at the end of the season dependent of the draft and draft positioning. There are already a few guys floating in the wind.

With regards to list cloggers, I think that Carr's list cloggers and generally much better than Hinkley's spuds. If they are clogging up the list, they will be delisted.

In the future, the main events will be the possibility of Butters leaving, Nasiah coming home, Zac Bailey free agency and how much we have to give up for Dougie and will we have good draft capital left over, ditto the Pilot, Salopek, Rodan, Tambe draft.

I think it will be a bit more of a rollercoaster ride of a year and I am, at the moment, downplaying expectations, whilst before I was quite up but it is a long year.

Yep in a nutshell and why not. Sounds 'good' to me.

Effort doesn't take talent and should be the minimum standard.

Reckon we probably learn't a lot from the crows game n their flood back then slingshot our 2014 gameplan.

It was unpicked last Sept, take a closer look coaches
