Not much excitment on the St Kilda board about this game.

This is how the Saints are seeing the opportunity.

Neither Auld, Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas or Saints counterpart Finnis could or would give figures as to either their financial underwriting or returns from their involvement in the match. But Finnis said it was a “significant” injection from the deal, which the Saints would aim to leverage opportunities for its sponsors – and to improve crowds.

“There’s the commercial outcome but it’s also a chance to grow our fanbase,” he said. “There are so many Chinese international students in Melbourne. Monash University, one of our performance partners, has 10,000 Chinese students in its own right. “It starts to differentiate our football club in a very competitive market.”

The Saints are no stranger to international AFL fixtures, having played three matches in Wellington for three losses between 2013 and 2015. The club clarified the China match did not mean the end for their aspirations to play matches in New Zealand, which hung on finding “a suitable venue in Auckland”. Auld said St Kilda were the only Victorian club to signal interest in participating in the fixture.

Matt Finnis talks about opportunities after Travis Auld introduction on Saints TV

.... As has been standard practice with the China game, the Saints will be the ‘home’ team, but will pass those rights onto Port, who will receive all gate takings.
Given there are no gate takings this seems fair.

2019 game exposure via St Kilda's involvement

St Kilda and the Power have committed to playing in China for the next three years, with the Saints selling off one home game per year as part of the deal.
Billings flew to China with teammate Daniel McKenzie, head of fitness Matt Hornsby and chief executive Matt Finnis.
The foursome arrived in Shanghai last Saturday night, with Billings and McKenzie staying four nights while Hornsby and Finnis departed earlier due to work commitments.
The group toured Jiangwan Stadium and its facilities on Monday, and also spent time visiting hotels in Shanghai as the Saints prepare for the trek.

Earlier in the thread I said lets get the big St Kilda celebrity fans to promote the s**t out of this.

Couple of weeks ago I heard Warnie promoting his new autobiography - said 13 unauthorised biogrphies had been written about him - on 5AA and he said when he was at the cricket academy for a year ( which my guess is 1989-90 summer) he lived at the Alberton Hotel with Langer Martyn Blewett and co. playing pool and drink all the time, and as he was the only one with his licence, he drove them to training and around town. He writes about it in his book.

Get him back to his old digs and film a promo ad for both Port and St Kilda and in the saints one, fire them up to travel to Shanghai for the game. List from around 4.00 onward

Yesterday I got an email about Shanghai game from the club and was intrigued by the "packages Available From $623."

As I expected, its a minimal base package - 3 nights accommodation, cost of Chinese visa, game day ticket and transport to the game from Tee Lee Travel. No flights in this package.

I decided to look around at all the packages and noted that the most expensive package an $8k, 10 day tour of Shanghai, Xian and Beijing with Phil Hoffman Travel it says you are "Escorted by Brian Cunningham." No idea if this is the first time this has been done, but its a good marketing idea to have a past great of Port or St Kilda for their fans, to accompany you on these different tour packages.

Cheaper to organise yourself than any of the packages. From my travel experience in the region, they should have more packages which take in HK before. I prob go next year, and spend 4-5 days in HK go to races experience HK and only go to Shanghai for sat sunday and perhaps monday.

Cheaper to organise yourself than any of the packages ....
Absolutely but there's whole swathe of people who can't/won't do anything but be ferried everywhere by guides etc. The $8,000 package RussellEbertHandball refers to is a good idea IMO and I'm sure it will sell well.
I don't want to put the various packages down too much as I'm sure there's money there for the club. But we did 14 days Shanghai/Beijing/Simatai section of the Great Wall for under $6,000 for two.

If you reckon your time is a free asset, and you are good at finding alternatives, then of course you can mix and match the basics for cheaper than a package. The Travel Agent has to make a margin.

Or you do like I did ..... and let your travel agent sister who is travelling with you and a few others, organize the best deals for you.

... but, I don’t want to go with my travel agent sister.

Then it's agreed, we're all going to China with RussellEbertHandball's sister.
Yes, RussellEbertHandball 's sister is my travel agent. And also my wife's.
