I think that Blake has improved and seems more flexible than last year
Mumford and West will improve and showed signs that they both be good ruckman.
(King leaving will give them scope to improve)

Mummy didnt get much time on but what i did see of him he looked good !:)

- Hawkins played on Hudgeton mostly i think and kicked the same amount of goals as Kosi playing on Taylor/Lonergan - fantastic sign!!!

- It appears Selwood wont be suffering from any 'second year player form lapse' - looked better than last year and harder at the ball. He had 7 clearances; the most of any player on the ground.

- Varcoe played well enough to take Byrnes place in the team IMO - had double the tackles and no clangers unlike Byrnes who had five.

- Hunt had 23 possies at 96% hit rate - back to his best.

- The Coreys (Joel and Enright) were their brilliant best

- No injuries!!!

He might have had 23 possies but if he keeps dropping his head when going for marks his career will be short lived did it again yesterday in the second quarter

can anyone tell me about how Mummy played? I only got to listen to it on radio and they didn't mention anything about him.

Was it his ruckwork or possessions that seemed ok?

ruck work looked top notch, BUT he only played mabey 5 mins, that i seen, looked very hungry !!! would like to see more of him thats for sure !!!

It was my first time seeing Harry Taylor in action. He'll be a player. Once our backline structure is strengthened with the return of Scarlo and Harls he won't have to be mismatched with players like Kosi.

i reckon the fact that tom hawkins kicked 4 but wasnt really dominating is a good sign

Agree. Loved it how he used his big frame to bully Rix out of the contest.

Hopefully we will see him get more game time, however from what we have seen he looks promising.

I thought the best thing about Hawkins was his workrate when the ball was on the deck and the fact that he helped to set up goals. His 'tank' looks a little bigger this year as it had to be and he could be set for a solid season.

i didnt watch the game...but i think a positive to come out of this is that if anyone was thinking that we are unbeatable this game showed that we are not...i am sure most people dont have this idea but a lot of people do. Turning up mentally is our biggest challenge this year

did he ??? i didnt see it.

will have to watch the replay

No, the incident when he ducked vs the Saints about a year and a half ago was mentioned during the game yesterday when Hunt attacked a contest.

Most players shirk a contest at some stage in their career.. but the media beat-up 18 months ago has stuck and as a result, tainted Hunt..

After the stick Josh got the week following that game, the next game was against Melbourne, the one where Tom Lonergan lost a kidney and all of a sudden commentators went silent on the shirking issue. This was evident when Aaron Davey ducked his head in that same game and nothing was said.

I've seen many players since shirk a contest, without a comment from the media while Josh is still on the receiving end. There was no need for that moron Dwayne Russell to comment on the incident yet he had to bring it up, again. No one else gets that same treatment.

Hunt ducked his head big-time when backing back to take a mark yesterday.

Why is it a "media beat-up" let's be honest, it was one of the worst examples of it's kind one could imagine so it's no wonder it received so much attention, plus it wasn't the first time he'd done it nor the last, never to the extent like he did against the Saints but you'd only want one like that in a career.

Think he's a damn good player and we're better with him in the side then out of it, but he's definitely suspect under a pack or when he's not sure what's behind him; it's a part of his game that's not going to change now probably, but as long as there's no repeat of the Saints incident it's something I personally can live with because of the other attributes he brings to the side.

Worse than Gaz Jnr's shirk leading for a mark inside forward 50 at a very crucial stage of the 2004 prelim?

As bad as anything I've ever seen to be honest, and dragging Gaz into it doesn't alter that fact, nor the fact that he has a penchant for doing it, so writing it off as a "media beat-up" really seems a bit strange.

You're right how dare I suggest an Ablett would have ever shirked a contest. Shame on me...
