Review Positives and Negatives vs Brisbane

- Simmo, I still think its between the ears. Simmo is a broken record wanting to come home, he needs to turn it around, embrace it, lie if he has to, just say they love it there, be more positive and it might rub off on the players. Look at what Clarko did when it snowed.

Looks like Simpson's plan is to try avoiding the problems in the hope they'll go away;

Simpson said the club was still working out the best way to give the players space during the week while staying at the Royal Pines Resort.

Time to the turn list over, the boys are cooked, pickled and done.

Shame we gave away our next 2 years of picks and we have no young mids coming through.

The next 5 years are going to be rough.

You're being way over the top mate.

JK and Hurn are probably close to hanging up the boots, other than that the core of the list is till of prime age.

We gave away our first round in this years draft, and that is it.

No I am not.

Last year we scraped by, by turning it on in one quarter only.

This form is not just this year. This cannot be turned around.

We have some issues as a team.

- Motivation - hunger/hub
- System - does it need a refresh?
- Structure - Playing our old brigade with young draftees isn't really working

Not sure what this year brings with all the challenges. But I don't see it as being a long term problem.

Some reasonable individual performances. Literally 3 or 4 players (already mentioned) won their match-up.

Ordinary football. Our games have become so congested that we've hardly seen a clean passage of play in two weeks.
Eagles got caught playing behind too many times with all the kicks off the ground or rushed around the body. Younger, smaller teams are bullying us at the contest. Too many players invisible for too long. Plenty of effort but no reward for NicNat's perceived dominance. (Brisbane's back-up ruckman arguably had a bigger impact on the game). Duggan has too many poor moments and too few useful possessions. Redden, Cripps, Sheed, Yeo, Jetta, Darling, Kennedy, Hurn, Allen, Petrol... all unsighted. Game time spent on our terms: <5%.

You can see the effort here and there but the outcome is the same. Game plan needs a facelift. Too much collective talent has been watching on for 8 straight quarters.

Given the circumstances, this was one of the hardest fixtures available (conditions the club has repeatedly struggled to deal with against a younger opponent that covers more ground; plays hard, contested football; defends well; and hasn't had to travel since the restart) and the team had a much improved (albeit scrappy and disjointed) performance than last week, despite once again being on the losing end.

But it was the same story once again that defined the outcome:
  • forwards playing so far up the ground so that no one is available to contest the ground ball when the team goes into attack
  • a defence that stays at home and offers no line-breaking pace on the counter
  • stoppages where nobody is blocking or on the move and every handball is to a stationary target in no better position

All Brisbane did was mass as many players as possible around the contest and make it resemble a rugby rolling maul - West Coast however made no effort to respond and even up the numbers until halfway through the final quarter as a last roll of the dice.

You can't expect a midfield, regardless of how much talent it has, to be able to compete when it is so comprehensively outnumbered at contests and opposition players are freely able to put blocks on to ensure first use of the ball. And in the circumstances where they prevail against the odds and win the contested ball, the outside runners are playing defensively off the back of the pack rather than running ahead and providing an outlet to move the ball forward.

Far too tall, too many players unable to rotate through stoppages and too many players being used outside of their natural positions.

Figures such as these are becoming unpleasantly familiar:

Contested possessions: -15
Uncontested possessions: -13
Turnovers: +6
Inside 50s: -16
Marks: -17
Score Involvements: -46

The effort was there, but the tactics and structure were not.

I may as well just link the comments I made after the Gold Coast match, as they still remain valid here.

The coaches will come under media scrutiny this week and it will be justified.

No doubt changes will made as a response; the last time the club incurred consecutive 5 goal-plus defeats (Round 6, 2019) saw the largest tactical shift in the team since the beginning of 2018.

Ironically, as previously discussed, many of the tactical changes made then are a source of the problems being encountered now.

The club now has just 7 days to make adjustments before Port Adelaide, a team that can be expected to play in a similar manner to the way the Lions did tonight.

Because if change does not occur, then the outcomes speak for themselves:
  • Won just 2 of the last 7 matches
  • 10 months since last win interstate
  • 22 months since last win in Queensland
  • First time failed to score 50 in consecutive matches since the final days of the Worsfold era.
Since the 2018 Grand Final, despite the midfield riches available, the club has lost the contested possession count 19 times out of 27. If that doesn't punch you in the face to suggest that something is seriously amiss in team structure and balance, then not much else will.

...but I saw Darling in space several times not be able to take a mark on his chest. The worst thing is, Simmo looks absolutely lost. You can see it in his face and his eyes, he has no idea what’s going on and he doesn’t know how to fix it. It’s just making it look like that flag was pure luck in 2018.

Seriously... can Jack Darling mark? He drops everything.

Bullshit. He showed a fair bit imo. He's being played so out of position and in shitty conditions. This is totally on the coaching staff/match committee
Nah taking a mark then trying to play on around the mark , backtracking then fluffing a kick to the corridor for a turnover goal is all on brander . One of the more stupid things I've seen thIs season.

Also if your going to be a winger who doesn't like to get down and dirty to win the ball you have to hit all your targets by foot ala Masten. Brander is lucky to hit half

One of those players is a 200 game veteran, and the other has played 6 games.

He will sit down with Van Berlo, do the review and learn from it.

You can already see the growth in his game and comfort in his role compared to round 1.

You'd almost say this is a revolt for recruiting Kelly and paying large money...

But then remember that for 90% of last year's wins, they could only be bothered to turn it on for one quarter.

They do not have it in them to turn this around.

Softer than butter.
One more, quite sad that this hugely talented group were only able to get up for one year.
Positive as always I see

2 big things we miss from our 2018 team are lecras and Willie.

Both know how to find the ball and were a conduit into our forward line from the midfield.

Cripps who is the other forward that can accumulate is being used as a defensive forward.

Petch, Ryan and ahchee are not big ball winners . Cameron wont solve that issue .

Not that it matters atm as our HFF is a waste land with our mids being so shit .

The only time we look like getting an inside 50 is from a centre bounce but only the 65% of times natanui is in there

There's something wrong if the game plan is, Bomb the ball down the line and hope for the best. Seriously that was all they did. Our forwards had no chance because it was constantly kicked to a 2v2 or 3v3 contest, there were no leads and all they could do is provide a contest. Which they did but there were no crumbers.

What happened to our game plan of kick and mark and looking for people in the corridor and switching the play. We were the best at this. And this has been completely absent for the last 2 games.

There are players in the 22 who are only WAFL quality. Brander, Ah chee and the downward skier Petruchelle . All turnover specialists. All providing nothing for us.

Kelly has made this team worse so far, and has questionable disposal.

Sheed and Redden has disappeared because of Kelly. Our backline is missing Mcgovern and Barrass has to go for marks instead of those double fisted spoils. And Hurn has definitely struggled.

Only men who can hold their head up were Gaff, Nic Nat and Schofield. The rest were woeful.

Overall, thought it was a better effort than last week and thought the eventual scoreboard flattered Brisbane.
+
- Thought Brander showed a bit. Wasn't there all game but there was enough
- NN is a jet. You could tell when he was off the ground
- Gaff worked hard and got lots of footy.
- Shep - magic. And a travesty that Cameron got anywhere near that footy for the free

-
- Time for Kelly to start earning that paycheck. He and Yeo have have the perfect credentials for todays game and dick **** all about it
- Oscar was woeful, a liability even. I love the kid, but he had a shocker. Not all his fault, he is not a ruckman, and not a midfielder.
- Darling and Kennedy. Where to from here?
- The umpiring was horrible. Mostly both ways. But particularly when the game was decided in the 3rd. The Jetta free was blatant bullshit, the guys feels contact and drops his knees and suddenly it's rough contact? And Cameron had to put his hotdog down, get dressed, come through interchange and then get to the pocket to take that kick. There was just a whole run of decisions through that period hat went against us. Side note - feels like Margetts is trying to take Razor Ray's role.
- The coverage. I get it 7, you want to make it seem genuine, but it isn't. You bag West Coast fans for booing then pipe in afore mentioned booing sounds (but fake ones) when we are kicking for goal. Shithouse.

POSITIVES:

- NicNat
- Defence; Schofield, Barrass, Sheppard, Duggan
- Brander
Only played his sixth game and continually improving. Took another step tonight. Too many knee-jerkers are making him a scape-goat.

NEGATIVES:

- Redden
Clock is ticking

- Yeo
Mate, what's the problem?

- Petrol
Time for a spell

- Cripps
- Rotham

This guy from the ABC pretty much nailed it.

Wow, he really did.

Dylan82 has figures out the solution. Let's hope our coaches can at least try something. Otherwise this season is done. It is already feeling a lot like 2013 for me. Game plann is broken and players are getting frustrated and demotivated.

Interested in hearing your thoughts as to why that is.

Those ragging on Brander are way off the mark, a kid that has played 7 games , and we can all agree is not a wing man, give the kid a chance, sure he can make some dumb errors, but would you expect from a 7 gamer, the kid is a smooth mover, put him on half forward as the hit up target. If the insist on playing Petch put him on the wing and let him use his best quality his speed, stop playing Oscar as a ruck man is just plain dumb, he is not one.

Negatives

We have the biggest game breaker in the comp and he is constantly playing on managed minutes, he is now 30 just play him for ****s sake, it's now or never for Nick, no more softly softly with him, the idea he cannot be risked is crazy, we are not winning with him playing limited minutes, so if he breaks down what will be the difference.

We are so unskilled it's not funny right now, and that was our strength, there was possibly two clean bits of play last night for the whole game.

To many players living off the memory of 2018 and getting a game because of it.

Positives

Our back line again, mostly held the hole in the dam wall before the constant wave of attack crashed the wall, only so much these guys can do before it becomes to much.
