Review Positives & negatives vs Hawthorn

No doubt Bill that Scott deserves credit this week as much as he deserved the blame last week. It's a tough gig but 5 years is enough time to produce results or get out.
And you would replace him with ??? Unless there is an upgrade that I'm not aware of, let brad jeep rolling, he has been there and brought this list together.

Black's contested marking, taken 1 or 2 good ones in the last three games when he has usually been a good one every month sort of forward. Would love to see him consolidate on that part of his game in the next couple of seasons.

You would interview candidates and make a selection based on the results of that and the best fit for the club, like you would for any position. All successful coaches have been untried rookies at some stage of their lives.

Scott should be given the chance to coach out the season, but if we miss the eight or another noncompetitive one and done then I don't see why his position wouldn't be in danger. The logic of "there isn't an upgrade" makes no sense because you don't know that until you appoint someone else.

Yes he's brought us from 9th to 7th in 5 years. Not good enough.

At a guess, I probably haven't posted anything team related since the Gold Coast loss, because reading through the incessant and reactionary dross, looking for rational posts on here is bloody tiresome. Not including posters who rightly question the team, or criticise players/coaches with reasoned explanation. It'd be nice if those who contribute next to nothing on this board, other than coming out of the woodwork to pot the club and everyone involved, after a loss, could give a bit of thought before hitting 'post reply'.

In saying that, the last two months of football has been frustrating. The inconsistencies of the team and individual performance, on not only a week to week basis but quarter to quarter must be ironed out quickly. Amongst the shit we dished up against the Lions, there were still positives, but we struggle mentally more than anything else, and some blokes who have been mollycoddled to an extent really need to perform consistently.

Positives.

The Defence >>>

Spud - Was absolutely super! He made his customary mistake here or there, like the fumble which led to Roughead's goal, but that second quarter of football he played was just about the best I've seen from him for years. He played tall and small. Had Schoenmakers early, Hale at times, and covered smalls on the counter. Lock-down defence and drive from the back half. His work-rate was as good as I've seen and his off the ball help defence/cover was valuable to our win. Great game.

Lachie - His first half performance underlies his value to the side. We missed him last week. 3 important intercept marks in the first and he was serviceable when he was forced to pick up.

Drew - Copped a fair bit of unfair criticism after last week. He was one of our better performed and he brought it into Friday Night's match-up, against a 'strong' opponent. Hit up at the ball hard. Strong in the air, and kicked truly. The highlight for me was the defensive coverage and effort late in the second quarter. We needed a lift, and we got it from one of our leaders who has gone missing in critical moments against good sides.

Wright - You can blame the mids for the influence that Breust had out the back and on the counter attack setting up goals or hitting the scoreboard. Outside of that, Wright stuck to his task and comfortably stopped Breust. Has to prove himself further, but his game on the weekend is one of the very reasons I've been one to back him in, and hesitant to write him off.

Bastinac - Has rightly come under the microscope at times this year. He's a reflection of our side's inconsistency. Although last week was disappointing, his first quarter against the Lions was very good. Probably a double digit quarter where he played a significant role in getting us the early lead. But he went missing like he has throughout the season when the heat came on. I'm not convinced he is settled in a role. Yet, it's no coincidence that he was good on Friday playing in a more inside role. He attended more centre clearance stoppages with Ziebell out and the addition of Anthony in the link up role. Only the 19 touches, but the signs were there with his tackling and intent.

Swallow - His first few steps look as quick as I've seen. He seems to be covering the ground well and was first to the ball all night. Set the tone and others followed.

Levi - A shining light this year and he performed again. Always had time for him, and with another well rounded performance he was probably best on ground.

Ben Brown - Seems to offer more defensively than Currie and Daw, and he sets up structurally better than both of them, more often. Leads up to the ball carrier well, and his leading patterns are good. I like what he offers at the moment.

Goldy's form - Has been my best on in two of his last 6 games and basically one out, Ceglar and Hale had very little influence at the stoppages.

Negatives.

Just a notable one for mine;

McMahon - Loathed to single him out, but I had a close look at him on the weekend, because I don't think his VFL form has been strong. I've wanted to see him return to his old form, but he was average imo. His off the ball work-rate was poor and although he did well when minding Puopolo for stages throughout, he provided very little with next to no drive from the back half. Uninspiring with ball in hand, whether it was handballing to the feet of a teammate with no pressure from a kick in or the on the full with a lazy one step kick off the left. A lot of cheap ball inflated his stats. The comparison in run and work-rate defensively between Firrito and McMahon was stark. Always liked him, but not sure where he stands moving forward.

In some of our bigger wins this season, it's been our ability to prevent the opposition from wrestling the game onto their terms. We denied the Hawks clear first possession. Pressured the ball carrier, and when they were deep in defence with ball in hand, we forced them to kick long, or risk the short kick with a very high press, which allowed us to invariably turn the ball over, early in the first and in the third quarter.

When we tired in the latter stages of the first half, it was the Hawks kicking game which really started to open us up in transition. The biggest positive of the night for mine, was the answer as a collective, and our leaders stood up when we needed to answer the challenge. Petrie's two defensive efforts on Suckling. Sam Wright's concentration to stop Breust one on one defensively in a dangerous situation. Two big wins which stemmed the flow before half time.

I said to a mate at the time after those defensive efforts, that we just need some brilliance forward of centre and keeping the lead, gives us the chance to flick the switch like we're capable of, which could break this game open. Fortunately, we got it, and it was our leaders who really set the tone. Full credit, to Petrie, Harvey (who is in career best form), Dal Santo, Swallow, Greenwood and Firrito who broke the game apart.

Two weeks before a week off remain the test for this side. Our finest form this season suggests that we should account for the Saints and Carlton but who knows. The clear intent, work-rate and willingness to be first to the ball, winning contest by contest against the better football sides is something we lack when the challenge doesn't seem as great.

We struggle mentally, and that is our biggest hurdle.

A great victory which means very little if we don't start to back them up week in, week out.

Great to see you back HH#3, and as usual absolute quality input. Stick around.

No mention of Luke McDonald.

Delist.

Just watched the replay - a lot's been covered so won't get repetitious, however I thought our rebound out of defence was excellent. Tended to look to attack through the corridor and took risks that often came off. Combined with improved defensive efforts team-wide this makes us a pretty formidable opponent when we're on.

Liked Jacobs' game, couple of dicey moments but he should be persisted with. Atley just keeps his feet. Ben Brown looks like a real find. Adams very solid - suited to the sub role. I'd almost written Wright off but games like this highlight his value to the side. Perhaps we play him only when we have a specific defensive role to give him? Too much of a head**** for a player to be in and out of the side according to this?

I feel for LA and was trying hard at the game not to bag him out as I hate people just going on and on slagging off our players but he is not up to it.

Fantastic win. Go North.

Hell yeah, much more decisive and trusting of our ability to go through the guts.

Dare I say it, the reigns have been loosened?
Maybe mentally more than anything. **** it boys, go for it, back yourselves, work hard for each other, cover each other, run run and ****ing run.

What I have been looking for all season. First option football. Get it and ****ing go.

Yes he's brought us from 9th to 7th in 5 years. Not good enough.
Oh is the season over??
List turnover and building culture, and depth is a time consuming process. Imo, as a poster you aren't good enough, can we fire you?

Anyone else think Jacobs has picked up a yard of pace. Seems a bit quicker and nimbler.

I am not at all worried about the saints game.

I am however worried about the Carlton game. Brad having never beaten mick. And Carlton has had a good month of football other than the GWS game.
