With all the negatives out of tonight's game, thought I'd start a positive post, rating the actual good parts of our game, good players and future positives.

Good Players;

Marty Clarke:
2nd half was very good, 19 disposals, nice efficiency, rarely beaten one on one.
Josh Fraser: Have to go with him as lone ruckmen most weeks, 21 hitouts, 19 possies, 1 goal
Scott Pendlebury: 25 possies, got caight once or twice, did well on Ling/Corey
Dane Swan: CAPTAIN: Our best player, week in, week out. 30 possies, thank god for Swanny
Presti: Kept Mooney to 2 shots at goal

Good parts of game:

Ruck:
I know there was no Brad Ottens, but Josh dominated all night, restricting their mids when he was on
Mids: Pendles, Swan and Beams, starting to build a midfield.

Future signs:

Beams:
Found a beauty here, Dayne Swan mixed with Pendlebury, 21 possies, best game yet
Cox: 22 Possies, made 1 mistake all night, easily our best back

I know there wasnt a heap, but there were some good signs, and we were playing Geelong, a clear premiership threat, which we aren't, no matter what anyone says, we are building this year and maybe next.

Pendles wasn't a positive tonight.

His work inside was far below standard. I wasn't impressed with him tbh.

Clarke, Beams, Fraser, Swan were big positives for me.

Beams i like

presti tried his ass off, set up a goal and held it together down back when obrien, brown, cox (****en cox dont be so ****en arrogant), etc all fell down around him

Leigh brown cant kick but as a spare parts player is useful, shoot me if you must but leigh was better then most tonight showed interest and heart

Swan is fantastic

Maxwell must play a roamers role

There was a lot of good signs when we were playing good, we just played in bursts though. We just shot ourselves in the feet, losing the momentum with bad shots on goal etc. When we were rolling, we played the corridor a bit and got a heap of numbers around the ball early, we looked hungry.
Even in the 2nd quarter we started well and had all the possession, we just didn't capitalise which was disappointing.

Watch the first quarter again. Was responsible for 90% of our clearances in that period. And 8 contested possessions for the game isn't shabby.

I had him as 2nd BOG to Beams.

The first quarter he was good, no doubting that.

The usual Pendlebury would get the ball, find space and dish off a handpass to a player in space. Tonight he was tackled more often than ever and didn't have that usual 'matrix' effect he has when he gets the ball.

Put it down to Geelong's brilliant pressure, their set up or just Pendlebury having an off game, but for the majority of the game he wasn't as clean or classy as usual.

An average Pendlebury will still be in our best lot.

One other positive we kick straight in the first, early second or late third we would of won with ease

Johnsons injury curtailed our midfield as well, he was beating ablett at the time

Firstly I don't think it was so clear cut.
Josh tried to do the right thing and push forward but he should be pushing back twice as hard, he was around the centre far too often.

I think losing Johnno is a huge plus.
Mick is all about rewarding players who showed him they want to be around during the preseason, Losing johnno means we get to bring in someone else and not drop a guy who busted his backside pre-season but wasn't cutting it.

I loved the way Clarke was backing into packs all night, no fear

Beams was awesome, I saw a lot of Selwood about him in his game.

Swan good again, odds on to win the Copeland after 3 rounds

Can't agree on Cox. His workrate is not of AFL levels and he makes too many mistakes and then "watches" it go the other way. Yes he can use the ball but if I had to rate his work rate out of 10 its at 4 at the very best.

Thomas is in the same boat, front-running-downhill-skier

There were signs, not enough after the first break and I think tonight shows you that we're still 30 points off the best sides. and we lack pace for a whole game.

I had then 4th to 6th at the start of the year, tonight I have then 5th to 7th.

The major positive was that we matched them (or close enough) in the midfield (barring that second quater.) I think that is something that was really impressive. We had similar number of scoring shots too.

Individually Beams was awesome, I had him as our best and his a second gamer. Almost every skill or area of the game he has in spades. Great in a contest. Goes in hard. Fantastic hands off the ground, great vision and ability to find a player. Serious talent

Fraser backed it up against slightly better opposition. Still looks like he needs a chop out, at times looked really spent (as would be expected)

Cox, despite what others say was actually pretty good in a tough intense game. Eased my mind a little with the preformance tonight.

Pendles, especially early on.

Shawthing you are going far too easy on him when the pressure was on he went to water just like the NAB cup GF and sorry to big not myself but like i said he would all last year

Plus two of the players he played on he paid no attention too, neither are good players (varcoe and stokes) and they shouldnt have scored 4 or 5 goals between them

Yes i was the bloke that gave cox the spray when he ran too far from the kick out in the second qtr

Our midfield being competitive against the best in the league for the majority of the game.

Dayne Beams.

We created plenty of scoring shots, our conversion was terrible, but our work to get those chances was good.

I can't believe people are saying that Johnno's broken leg is a positive - you are a disgrace!!

Yes he's not the most talented player around but he's Collingwood through and through and has worked his arse off to give himself a shot. He played 1 quarter tonight but was a big loss when he went off, actually thought he was beating Ablett when he was on him. Ablett ended up with nearly 40 touches but Johnno was doing better on him in that period than I've seen anyone do for about 30 games.

I haven't wanted him in the team either but a "positive".

By the way, its not all bad. geelong are the best team in the competition and our window will more likely start next year than this. We were better than them for 2 1/2 quarters and looked inside more than usual. Our problem isnt that we dont use the corridor its that we always leave 5 opposition players alone in the back half of the square when we're in defence.

PS q1 was the best we've played this year..

I thought Leigh Brown did ok last night. His kicking for goal was shocking but if he kicks straight he ends up with 4. He is not a world beater but if he plays like this everyweek and gets his kicking right then he will be a positive for us.

Yeah I didn't mind Leigh Brown's efforts either. Just needed to kick the goals, but he wasn't the only one. Who the hell is out goal kicking coach? Why are some our forwards still so sh1t at goal kicking?

Beams was obviously the big positive of the night.

Anthony's game wasn't that bad given his primary role for the night was too get Scarlett away from the ball. He still got 12 disposals, 4 marks and a goal so I'm content with that effort when its a negating role against the league's best fullback.

I thought Cox was fine. Yeah he got goals kicked on him, but all our defenders did. He wasn't our worst.

Another frustrating 3/4 game by us. Well done Cats and all that, but I just hate that we threw away a game like that. We had momentum and then lost it when we failed to kick goals and the Cats made theres. So now we're 1 win and 2 losses heading up to the Gabba which has not been a happy hunting ground for us.

What do people think about Brad Dick's efforts? Second game back from a full season out against the benchmark team was it good enough to retain his spot?

Pretty much agree with all of this. I would be disappointed if Brown makes way for Rocca. He deserves to keep his spot after tonights effort.

I make my In and Outs after I go and watch the VFL Game

there were definitely positives. Considering we lost by nearly 100 points in the NAB Cup GF...it was good to know we still match Geelong. I still fancy us if we play them in a final. Let's face it, we had them in the 2nd quarter.

Beams is the massive positive. We have found the in and under we are desparate for. Will take 3 years to get his body to a size where he will have huge influence...but he is the sort of player we need.
