Who would you like the crows to draft. Im sure each of us has a specific player that we would like to see wearin the tri-colours next year. Doesn't have to be first round pick, could be someone you believe the club could grab late and still be a star in the future.

My choice for the Crows would be Daniel Menzel, played a blinder of an U/18 carnival for South Australia as a rebounding defender before finishing the year in Central Districts reserves who finished 3rd. Seemed to fly under the radar a bit but now the press is catching on that he is a real player. He is a solid all round player who would initially play on the half back flanks before moving into the midfield where he has played most of his junior footy. Is a versatile player who has bags of potential. Below is his writeup from the AFL Site:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/85982/default.aspx

Daniel Menzel (Central District, SA)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 13/09/91
Recruited from: Golden Grove
Seems to have risen in recent times and it would not surprise if he moved inside the first round, although the second-round appears more likely. He is one to keep an eye on.
Draft range: 12-35

I've nominated Tom Harms as my choice, who is being interviewed by the club tomorrow:

Tom Harms might be a bit of a smokey for a later pick. I've seen him play a couple of times for Sturt's U18s and he cracked the reserves side on a few occasions this year. I'd say he's a bit of goal sneak and could probably mould into the type of forward we're lacking. Apparently the club has spoken to him but I'm unsure as to what extent.

Tom Harms (Sturt, SA)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 15/06/91
Recruited from: Immanuel College
Versatile midfielder/forward who is very difficult to match up on. Strong hands as well as powerful and accurate foot skills make him a danger when in possession. SA U18 representative in 2009.

I like the idea of a smaller, nipper midfielder with good foot skills. Most of our mids are over 6 foot and are not super quick and I reckon we could do with an elusive, agile player in there. It's only youtube highlights, but I do like the look of Brad Sheppard - super quick, good footskills and a fierce attack on the ball.

I wouldn't use Pick #13 on them, but Jared Allmont and Matthew Goldsworthy (both from WWT) also seem to go alright.

1st rounder

Lewis Jetta (Swan Districts, WA)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 72kg, DOB: 04/05/89
Recruited from: Bridgetown
Extremely quick player who provides great run and carry. Team-oriented with clean hands and great agility. Can play a variety of positions.

Ben Cunnington (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 30/06/91
Recruited from: Cobden
Skilful inside midfielder/forward who rarely loses a contest. Ultra clean hands both in the air and on the ground. Strong performer for Vic Country at NAB AFL U18 Championships earning All-Australian honours.

Gary Rohan (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 07/06/91
Recruited from: Cobden
Explosive half-forward who is extremely capable in the air. Defensive pressure a highlight. Won Vic Country’s MVP award as well as All-Australian honours at NAB AFL U18 Championships.

Kane Lucas (East Fremantle, WA)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 26/06/91
Recruited from: Trinity College
Hard-running and highly-skilled player who likes to run and carry. Speed, awareness and ball-winning ability are all features. WA U18 representative in 2009, earning All-Australian honours as a medium forward. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

3rd rounder..or 2nd

Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide, SA)
Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg, DOB: 05/02/91
Recruited from: Mallee Park
Quick midfielder whose decision-making and clean hands in traffic are his strengths. Reads the game well and has strong defensive skills. South Australian U18 representative in 2009.

If you want to take a punt on a very athletically gifted ruck, who's come on very poorly from last year, but still has ceiling (though his year was pretty crap)

Jack Fitzpatrick (Western Jets, VIC)
Height: 201cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 26/06/91
Recruited from: Wyndhamvale
Supremely quick and agile ruckman who can play at both ends of the ground. Strong hands overhead is a feature. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2009 and an AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

He may look like an unco SMACK, but could be worth a long term punt in this draf, if he's not gone, probably go early 2nd.

Matt Wright from North Adelaide would be a great pickup with our second or third round pick, he's had a fantastic year playing in the midfield and has also shown he can play as a crumbing forward as well.

my 1st round pick
Koby Stevens (Gippsland Power, VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 18/06/91
Recruited from: Lucknow
Tough, inside midfielder with ferocious attack on both ball and player. Contested ball-winning ability and strong hands overhead are strengths. Vic Country U18 representative in 2009. AIS-AFL Academy graduate.

I know nothing about any draftees, but looking at that Jetta seems very ... old for a first round pick. What's the story with that.

Late developer I think. Not unusual for there to be one or two slightly older players hovering around late first round and into the second round. Burton was an "older" first round pick when we got him, Vince and Tippett both 2nd rounders were slightly older, last year Balantyne went at 20ish for the Dockers last year.

Wouldn't be surprised if we did take a punt on Jetta, if his profile is anything to go by, the fact that he's versatile and a team player would help, also being an extremely quick, agile, run and carry type would be great as I think we could do with one or two more real line breakers, who can take the game on for when our handball happy game plan breaks down. Also being slightly older, could have a bit more of a mature outlook, which would also appeal to the Crows. Pretty skinny by the looks, but then has been playing in the WAFL all year(played in the SOO game), so can clearly cope with the bigger bodies.

This was his first year in the WAFL and he's already become one of the best in that league. The only query would be his ability to stack on some weight as he'll get ripped apart in the AFL. Also he's not really that good in contested situation and sits out of packs. He has an amazing outside game though and would be our next Macca.

He does resemble a praying mantis a lot.

could put on 15kg without being big.

That said, for someone who spends most of his time on the wing, his goal sense is terrific.

Wouldn't mind seeing him be a bit more aggresive as a tackler, though that should come with weight, as he likes the run downs.

Good player but not AFL standard. Injured his PCL late in the season so won't have much of a pre-season. How old is he, about 21? He's been talked about this time of the year for the past 3 years, no thanks.

JARRED ALLMOND - WWT
Age: 19
Height (cm): 182
Weight (kg): 70
Total Games: 22
Total Goals: 4
Recruited From: Two Wells

Would be a good late pick IMO.
Rookie pick IMO.

Alex Stopp from Norwood is a chance. He's a key defender who played the year with Norwood playing a key role in defence. Recorded the best beep test result at the State screening with a 15.9 and improved a heck of a lot this year.

Alex Stopp:

DOB: 18th March 1990
Height: 189 (that's incorrect, he's Will Young's height, 192cm)
Weight: 85

Would be a nice addition to our defence. Strong in 1-on-1 contests and would probably be ready to go next season. Went undrafted in 2008 but as I said improved a lot this year.

Perhaps Roland Ah Chee as a late pick too. Finished top 3 in beep test (15.5), vertical jump (74cm) and agility course (8.26). Is a small midfielder, very courageous and wins lots of the ball. Could probably play as a small forward too.

1st rounder
Gary Rohan.

I Agree with Gary Rohan, looks good. Sheppard is very clean of Half back as well.

Drum, say if im wrong, were you not on the Alex Stopp bandwagon last summer? I dont know alot about him. Do you think he has come on enough this season?

Nah I didn't know a lot about him last season so I doubt I would've wanted him drafted last year. This year however he was really good in defence. More often than not he had to stand the opposition's best forward and most times he did well. From a distance he looks ridiculously similar to Will Young and if they both played for the Crows the commentators would have fits! A couple of times, mainly late in the season, his man got on top of him but I would expect him to be a 3rd or even 4th tall at AFL level, he could handle that. I'd expect him to be drafted, whether that he late in the ND or as a rookie. He's got nice potential and his improvement this year should be enough to see him find a home at AFL level. :thumbsu:

Stopp was very much on the radar last year. I saw him play a part in the midfield for the SA u20s this year as well, although for Norwood he was in the back half. He's had quite a good year, has many of the physical attributes and composure you look for in an AFL player. Hasn't got that game-breaking skill or ability to attract the ball, but would attract interest again this year as team's look to plug gaps, as a CHB/3rd KPD. Has to the confidence to move off his opponent, whilst remaining accountable. Very good in traffic and as a linkman, but not a damaging rebound type. I think scouts would be tempted by his potential to play as a tall aggressive inside mid, like Joel Corey.

With the loss of Lee we may look at drafting someone like Stopp.

I remember reading Matt Burgan Phantom Draft, with our pick 72 he mentioned Adelaide may be interested.

72 – ADELAIDE – BEN BUCOVAZ
Bucovaz ... Alex Stopp is one player to keep an eye on around this mark as well.

What I take from this is that Burgo might have heard Adelaide were considering Stopp last year. Could possibly be a late pick or rookie selection.

From reading your post Drum, my pick would be Roland Achee, sounds like the type of small foward/mid we could really use. He plays for the Maggies right?

doesnt that make him no good by default? :p
ive heard his name mentioned a few times here... what are his stats?

I haven't seen them play, but how about one of the following who were in the SA U18 team. Could they be the small crumbing forward we are looking for?

Bryon Sumner (Eagles, SA)
Height: 174cm, Weight: 68kg, DOB: 16/05/91
Recruited from: Woodville South
Quick and clever midfielder with penetrating left foot. Evasiveness and clean hands overhead are two of his strengths. Performed very well for SA at NAB AFL U18 Championships.

Derick Wanganeen (Port Adelaide, SA)
Height: 172cm, Weight: 63kg, DOB: 05/02/91
Recruited from: Mallee Park
