I know what you're saying, but I think the Goodes/Cornes/(Pavlich) comparison is poor. Reid is taller than all those blokes, and doesn't have nearly the coordination/ball-winning ability. As much as we won't like to admit it, he plays very similarly to Tarrant.

So yes, he could play on the wing, but it'd be still as a leading option, rather than anything else. Given our style of play, this isn't so inconceivable, but a 196cm guy floating around the wing seems a little bit of a waste to me.

Tarrant was hopeless below his knees. Reid, though 3cm taller, is a very good scrapper at ground level. Plus, with that extra 3cm in the bank, and a few more kgs on his frame, I'd hope he'd develop into a better contested mark than Tarrant (never a strength of Tazza's). To my way of thinking, Tarrant was always a pumped-up flanker. Give him two or three years and Reid will be a genuine KPP IMO.

I think Reid is more Lance Franklin than Chris Tarrant.

Also, Bonuspoints, we'd never get a 1st round pick for Rusling at present. Maybe if he plays well throughout next season, but not now.

Exactly. Having said that, if he could kick he would have been a bloody good one. And I think if Reid doesn't develop his contested marking his role will be pretty similar. That's a massive if in my book, given I can't remember anyone really developing contested marking very much. It's usually you got it or you don't. Adding strength etc...just augments your ability. At the moment, his contested marking ability is pretty non-existent.

I'm not so sure about the contested marking, MDC. One of my reservations about Trav as a key forward was that his overhead marking in his first couple of years was practically nonexistent. Yet this year he's started plucking marks overhead. I'm not sure why he's suddenly improved this year. Confidence? Practice? Dunno.

My thinking is that tall players, particularly tall lanky players like Reid is at the moment, struggle because they're easily buffeted and jostled off the ball in body-on-body contests. Until they have that core strength through the thighs and torso that enables them to hold their ground and not get rag-dolled, they'll struggle to take contested grabs. So I'm pretty hopeful that Reid will improve overhead as he adds a bit more size. I think he leads well and seems to read the ball through the air fairly early, so I'm pretty hopeful. I think he's an A-grade prospect. Rusling, I'm not so convinced.

It's not even necessarily marking overhead. If he can just hold marks with "the dukes" out in front, as Brian Taylor calls it, he'll be much more valuable. Cloke was doing this in his first season (which is why I liked him so much even in his rookie year).

You might be right PS, I'm just not as convinced as some people that skills like contested marking, clearance play, vision etc...can be developed.

I have only seen bits and peices at vfl level so can't comment but the hawthorn game was deffinatly a couple of extended duke marks and one impressive contested mark in which he got up in the air, guarded the flight of the ball with his frame/leg and took the ball in front of his face

Well, that would definitely be a strong positive in my book. Most of what I've seen has been lead/chest-mark type stuff, thus the tarrant comparison.

His contested marking is also something that i thought was one of the reasons we where so keen to get him in the draft, apparentally it was a real asset of his at under 18s level
