Negative: We are 16 months away, minimum from competing in finals again.

Positive: That's probably in the top 5 losses we will ever have to endure loving this team.

negative: we ____en lost a 51 point lead!

positive: we are now officially tanking! i mean no team could play like that in the second half and say they were honestly trying.

+ve - Solomon, just keeps on giving his all
-ve - Shirkers, you know who they are

Some have the willingness to do so but not the talent, others have the talent but not the willingness.

Negative: The Premiership Window we looked through in 2006 is now closed.

Positive: If this had happened next year, we would have been shafted by the expansion drafts, meaning years at the bottom. There is still time to rebuild, especially with the nucleus of youth we (finally) have.

You are a laugh a minute.

One thing I am proud of is since CC is that we never tanked along the bottom to get picks.

We should be using Port as an example to follow.

And the opening post is spot on. Clubs that 'tank' or 'bottom out' can't see the forest for the trees IMO. I'll argue everytime you can't accept crap seasons, games being played for picks and talk of 'five year plans', '2011', etc. etc. and then when these teams make the finals and the crunch is on their players are suddenly supposed to forget years of 'today doesn't matter, we'll be better tomorrow for the loss' when everythings on the line? These are footballers, not rocket scientists, you can't send one message over and over then think it can be discarded as easily as saying 'We're now a top side'.

I've used the example before in these debates, but from personal experience watching Port, no single match stands out more of how installing a winning culture is more important then a high draft pick and a top player then Port v. St. Kilda in 2000. 15th vs. 16th, two teams that were playing badly. Port get thumped by 10 goals by the Saints and are languishing with the prospect of their first wooden spoon, but the chance to pick up the clear no. 1 pick of that year's draft - Riewoldt. Heck, why not, the season was shot, they couldn't make the eight from there. Instead they said that's not where Port will ever be and turned it around with winning more matches then not in the run home from there. Something you haven't seen a side 16th at that point of the season do since I think.

And the result? Port take out 3 minor premierships and a flag. Along the way they meet a St. Kilda side with that top draft pick. Everything's on the line and one side has a never say die attitude and wins a close contest. The other has been progressively worse each season since with those top draft picks as the nucleus of the side. Port turns over half their list in the interim and are looking, if not a flag threat this year, then showing a hell of a lot more fight then the Saints.

Sure I'd be stoked if Port got a top 3 pick via a trade, but I'll take a win over a higher draft pick every day of the week and twice on Sunday's. Instilling the need to win every game is much more important then one or two draft spots.

lol you are right about the tanking ripper, it really isnt worth it at all!

i need to use humour to get over the lose and get me to the next game! :p

I sincerely hope neither WA team starts tanking. We need to win games, not do a Carlton and sell out on success.

Tanking is for weak Victorian clubs who want success handed to them on a platter because they can't draft properly. Our drafting has actually been very good, and even with dropping a few picks down the ladder i think we can still manage to draft better than alot of other clubs at this point.

Yeah we didn't need to tank to get Palmer, Mayne or Ibbo. And they're our three shining lights at the moment.

We just need to start holding on to our draft picks and let our talent scouts do their job.

Absolutely. One of the advantages the club has is a big budget, and a big scouting budget, so we should take advantage of that to the fullest and just keep our picks.

I don't agree with that.

I said at the start of this season that we won't be a serious premiership contender until 2010, and I'm sticking by that.

Imagine 2010, Palmer, Mayne, Hinkley third season in. Brock and Foster fourth season, Ibbo and Drummy fifth season. Hase, Mcpharlane, Sandi and Pav at their absolute peak. Josh, Roger and Solo the veterans. And who knows about Warnock, he'll either be at his peak or Jared Rivers (who'll we get in the trade) will be;)

I think Pav, McPharlin and Hase are at their peak now. Well maybe not hase, but you catch my drift.
