Postitives:

- More direct action through the middle of the ground...less wishy-washy crap up the wings

- Ken McGregor: really played the forward role well tonight, demanded the ball, brought it to ground well, marked well and kicked a bag

- Wayne Carey: hustled again, was released with McGregor being the main forward and showed how dangerous he can be when he isn't carrying the weight of the forward line on his shoulders

- Luke Jericho: continued to look at home in the forward line, despite a low statistical return

- Nathan Bassett: found the form of a couple of years ago, granted the opposition was weak but he looked confident

- Ian Perrie: a bit clunky, but played Ottens very well and proved he can be a good target, ran out of defence well

- Ben Hudson: continued to impress

- Matt Clarke: HUSTLED! MARKED! GOALED!

- Gallagher, Doughty, Massie: the young'uns looking good...Doughty was very nice

- Andy McLeod: looked good running off half-back, apart from that early screw up

- Ricciuto good as usual

- Stenglein fantastic in the middle

- Burns looked good playing off the talls

Negatives:

- Nathan Bock: look, it's only his first game, but we must admit those goals were lucky, he didn't look like he knew what he was doing in the forward line, his kicking looked awful down back, and he did the old 'push-in-the-back'. Mediocre debut.

- Hentschel: he wasn't bad by any means, but he is beginning to look a bit TOO laconical...close to getting caught several times, taking a long time to kick...needs a bit more urgency in his game

- S. Stevens: started well, but my oh my does this boy drop out of the game...consistency is awful...kicked straight though!

- We lost some interest in the 2nd half, which is disappointing considering how much percentage we could do with

- Some fundamental handling errors were still apparent, which would get exploited by bigger sides.

All-in-all, some good signs but I would still prefer Perrie up forward, Bock really didn't look the part, and we could do with maybe one more midfielder.

All I've got to say, is thank the good lord that Gary Ayres is on our side, and not theirs.

The mastermind, behind one of our greatest ever wins!! Go Gary!!

Congrats on the win guys. I knew if I kept tipping Adelaide they would win.... eventually. Good to see you on the scoreboard.

75 point win and good to open our account for 2004 - but we were playing the worst side in the comp bar none.

Hopefully we can reproduce that sort of stuff against the better teams we have coming up on our draw.

Actually, if Gary wasn't so stubborn on match-day, a bit more proactive during the game, he would be a genuinely great coach. He thinks well before the game, and has hardened up Adelaide very well.

Don't know how much the camries can take out of it really. They were very good, but I expected them to come out firing. Richmond, well, they don't even deserve to be 1-4. They are dead set shocking.

Bassett is always top entertainment, especially when he really does get screwed by an umpire.

Best thing we'll take out of tonight is just the confidence we'll get from winning and winning well. Very hard to assess everything else.....what's scary is that Perrie will probably be CHB from now on! (Granted he did a great job tonight though)

And gee, isn't it enjoyable playing the Tigers? So many wonderful games against them, the two 100 point beltings, the 9 goal 3rd term in 2001, a heart-stopping win in 2000 in Nigel's 200th, so many memories!

Three 100+ point floggings over Richmond ;)

1993 @ Football Park 139pts
1997 @ Football Park 137pts
1992 @ MCG 110pts

and

1993 @ MCG 94pts

This margin was pretty large given Adelaide in those years had a much better forward line.

Ah yes of course, I meant to say two 130 point floggings ;) and a couple of others close to the triple figures, thanks for that.

Well considering 100-point floggings rarely occur if you've got a bunch of hacks in your forward-50...

surely this is the one key ingredient of a class player " time" trent is starting to show exactly that, he has alot of class and knows how much time he has. His disposal efficiency would have to be very high for someone who is "laconical"

Yeah I gotta agree, Trent looked very good again tonight, lovely poise (I apologise thus far Stiffy)...I remember he got the ball once deep in the Tigers forward line, under pressure in a pack and went to kick, but feinted and gave off a handball instead...he knows what he's doing out there and hopefully he can keep that up down back.

And he's also a bit harsh on Bock in his first game, he did look a little slow at times, made a bad mistake but in his first game, he did reasonably well. I don't know if you could say for certain either way whether he has a future at this level.

You stole my thunder!!

Hentschel was a super positive tonight, not a bloody negative.

Read the play well and disposed of the ball beautifully - because he did take his time and didn't waste a crumb!!

Pressure from the forward line - this was a great part of our game in 2002 and it was back tonight.

It looked like all of our forwards were keen to tackle tonight - even Burns. Ronnie struggled with the pace of the game but laid at least one good tackle.

Jericho and Johncock together are a very handy combination. Good skills, strong marks, good footy brains as well as some pace and persistance.

I liked it when Jericho went back to defence. I think it will help him read the play a bit better. Still adjusting to the pace of the game up forward so the odd stint up back should him with his vision and placement.

Good points all round Jerome.

Our forwards put great pressure on their defenders in all but the 3rd quarter, and turned the ball over or held it in the area time after time - great stuff!!

We needed some pace in the team. Jericho and Johncock add this as does Reilly when he's playing. Doughty, Gallagher and Bode are doing everything possible to make it hard for Reilly to get his spot back!!

One great point about Jericho is that he can play forward, back or on the wing. He's playing a bit before his time, but he is certainly on a fast learning curve, and has a heap of natural attributes. He's got a great future.

Very harsh on hentschel and Bock.

While I agree that Bocky did look a bit nervous and at times did find the pace of the game a bit "quicker" at times, I strongly disagree that he was negative. He had a better debut that I thought he would and that "mistake" he made that resulted in Richmond goal is a joke. He was deadset tripped there.

The beauty of Hentschel is that he looks SO slow but he NEVER gets caught. I have watched him in 20 odd games so far and I only saw him got caught one and that was last week. His poise under pressure and his ability to kick targets under pressure is fantastic for a bloke of his size and (in)experience.

Jericho was pretty good. His pace and clean take were highlight tonight. I loved the bit in the 1st half when he ran out to the 50M line hugging the boundary, picked up the ball and kicked his over his shoulder to the top of the square without even looking. The result was a goal.

Hudson played the best game for the club. Couple off marks he took in the 3rd quarter were fantastic.

The most pleasing thing for me is the form of our youngsters. All youngsters played well.

Special mentioned to Massie, Doughty and Gallagher who all played very well.

Richmond are a bloody rabble. wouldn't like to be a richmond supporter ATM. Must break your heart.

The mistake was that he didn't get rid of the ball in the eternity he had before (as I said in the other thread) Crackwhore slide- tackled him...

Should've been his free sure, but he should've gotten rid of it earlier too - which is forgivable in your first game but hopefully he doesn't make a habit of it like one of his WWT team-mates whose name begins with 'S' and ends in 'kipworth'...

I agree 100%, he should have got rid off it when he had a chance but that was a trip if ever I saw one. Bock should have got a free from that but it doesn't matter now.

As I said Bocky did better than I thought he would as a forward. I like him a LOT more as a defender.

Well first Crows game live for the season, really poor crowd, and the Richmond supporters on the way home were absolutely ropeable.

The interesting thing, was that although we complain about the size of our youngsters and bigmen, we seriously outmatched the Tigers tonight. Even Hentschell, Jerricho, and Bock were taller and heavier than their direct opponent.
The only mis-match against us was in the first half, when Perrie was matched up on Ottens.

Our attack on the ball in that first half was first class, tackling , a feature of our game when playing well, was fantastic.
Richmond always play a defensive game, with players behind the Richmond kicker, and after half time, our intensity dropped off, and Richmond tried to lock the game down and avoid a real blowout.

Although Stenglein played really well around the ground, in close at centre square ball -ups, he is still woeful, and too slow with his disposal.
He should start out of the square. Doughty, with his quick, one grab hands, looks good in the square, and setup some effective centre square clearances.

Some player notes:
Perrie He's not physically right. 2/3rds through the first qtr, he had his hands on his knees, bent over, and he was really struggling fitness wise. Recovered, but appeared to have little aroebic capacity, and was eventually replaced. Last year his fitness was a significant factor in his good season.

Hentshell When the lads got the ball, his peripheal vision and decision making coming out of defense is excellent. Is starting to really demand the ball from team mates, and although looks as though he's slow, he never gets caught, which is a sign of a good player.
Negatives: his opponent regularly lost him in traffic, and he was continually looking around trying to find his opponent, who sometimes was 30 mtres away. A good mobile CHF would really hurt him at the moment. His attack on the ball is still too soft.

Bock Have my doubts. His height and build are perfect for AFL, didnt look bad in attcak, but seriously the marks and goals he kicked wern't that difficult. The major area of concern, and its been evident from day one, is he his seriously hopeless below his knees.

Jerricho Second game reality check. The kid has some real talent. However he needs to grab the ball two handed, not one handed as he's trying to evade a player. Can do this in juniors but not afl - two hands please. Needs to get stronger, grabbing marks, but spilling at last moment - will naturally improve. On tonights game, he would be dropped, but if we're winning, we should perservere with him for experience. He will be good.
Suffered cramps in the last qtr, will be interesting how fresh his legs will be next week, for his 3rd game?

Burns Was two thoughts in front of everyone, but he continually fumbled all night.

Mcgregor He just added to his value as a top 10 trade, showing he can play CHF and CHB. Best I've seen his kicking for a while, and hands were excellent.

Burton A great game, was instrumental in our first half lead, and really showed leadership skills tonight. One grabbed and was absolutely fearless. Note: he is not a natural footballer, he does take a number of games to get his touch and timing - should he be injured, always bring him slowly back through the SANFL.

Bassett Gone!
Did some good things against weak opposition, but very slow, not big enough now for a KPP, and is scragging more than ever, just to stay in the contest. IMO last season.

Macleod & Roo Fantastic leadership, Macleod back to his best. He chaced several opponents down and laid tackles.

Bode Best game i have seen for a long time, back to 2002 form. Interesting he was still run in short stints off the bench, but made a real diference when on the ground.

Hudson He will improve. and his efforts tonight, clean hands, and decision making were excellent. Obviosly a query on his fitness, but has the attributes to be a significant contributor in the future, perhaps in a KP.

B]Stevens[/B] Drops out of games I think due to the nature of his role, where he plays as the wide leading target out of defense.
Needs to be stronger in his marking, doesnt one grab often enough.

The other interesting thing tonight, was our "continual" rotation of midfielders off the bench. We were a lot of times, changing two at a time. Gallagher, Bode, Stenglein, Doughty, were off the ground so often it was hard to keep up with. It did show however a need to get quality midfielders in the draft.

Our gameplan - seriously good, down the corridor most times, and long kicking was the order of the night. We even were looking to pass long to leading forwards, not helicoptor kicks into the forwrd line.

Last thought, remember it was only Richmond, and everyone looks good against that sort of competition.

Burns handled the game pace OK, just couldn't handle the ball cleanly. Continually tried to turn his opponent around.

Stiffy, kid has talent no doubt.
He was cramping up from about the mid third qtr. In fact a lot of the crows had their socks down and doing little muscle stretching exercises. It will be interesting to see how much that ground took out of the players for next weeks game.
Jerricho was not clean with his hands, his confidence got a head of the need to take the ball with 2 hands.

I agree with everything you have to say waynes world.

I cant say I noticed Perrie's fitness level but now that you mention it...I thought he had a great pre season? What impressed me was his field kicking. It was shocking at times yet he still hit targets.

I thought Bass was Ok early (granted he was on a shorter opponenet) but as it went on he lost the plot. That dummy spit was not called for.

Agree with your points on Hentschel. He was quiet in the first and got a goal kicked on him. His form improved from the second onwards, but as you say - needs to tighten up on an opponent and attack the ball with more intensity.

Jericho didnt take it as clean as he would have liked. Still learning how to read the play at AFL level. Maybe he is rushing it a bit but he's doing OK.

Hudson & Clarke - Biglands is going to find it difficult to get a game after his suspension is up.

Richmond were dreadful. Very dissapointed with Kane Johnson, I consider him Captain material and he didnt give them much drive. Shows how badly they are going.

I thought the game plan had improved as well. It will be interesting to see how we go against some tougher opponents in the next 4 weeks.
