One thing that annoys me about playing in round 0 is that we'll be one game ahead until we have our bye in round 5. So I'll need to constantly take the extra game into consideration when trying to figure out where we actually sit on the ladder. That annoys me.

The only thing that will prevent me from being annoyed is if we win each of our opening 5 games. Then I just need to calculate how much better we are than the rest of the pack.

Make it happen swans!

I dunno Jewels, I think the AFL have shown plenty of integrity towards the 14 clubs they care about.
You’ve got me thinking - “which 4 does caesar88 reckon the AFL doesn’t care about?”

I’ve come up with 3:

  • Sydney Swans
  • Brisbane Lions
  • Fremantle Dockers

But the 4th is baffling me.

They care about GWS - the battle with Rugby League depends on it.

They care about Gold Coast - yet another failed sporting team on the Gold Coast would be horribly embarrassing for the AFL exec.

They care about Port & The Crows - gather round proves it.

They care about West Coast - too well connected politically to ignore.

And it certainly ain’t a Vic club.

Put me out of my misery caesar88 ….. who is the 4th?!?!

It is the Northern clubs, DQ.

The AFL do not care about GWS.

A few years ago I posited my theory that Gold Coast & GWS were introduced into the AFL for the purpose of being unofficial academies for the Victorian, SA & WA clubs.

Gold Coast & GWS draft the kids from the traditional footy states --> Those kids spend 3-4 years developing at Gold Coast & GWS --> They request trades back to those traditional footy states --> AFL compensates them with more draft picks --> the cycle continues.

The counter to that theory is that Gold Coast & GWS cost a lot to run and function, particularly in the often-thankless Northern markets, and there's no way the AFL would invest so much money just to help the clubs from the traditional footy states land some extra players. The counter to that argument, of course, is that the AFL would've been laughing all the way to the bank with the last decade of Victorian dominance. A Hawthorn three-peat? Richmond winning three flags with 100k members? Western Bulldogs & Melbourne fairytales? The biggest club in the country winning last year's premiership? It's all going swimmingly. And players from the Northern clubs have played an immeasurable role in much of that success.

Now when I first said it, at the time I was really just indulging my inner conspiracy nut. However the AFL haven't really done anything to disprove it or convince me otherwise. Pretty much every measure that they've put in place to try and "expand the game" in the Northern states, they've just ended up neutralising or scrapping entirely because, as I mentioned above, their integrity & loyalty is ultimately towards 14 other clubs.

New regime now, so TBD...

You need to add the tv rights deal and this becomes a plausible conspiracy theory.

Also try work in something about "Gillon being replaced by "Dillon"

It may cost them to have GCS and GWS but it is the TV dollars they crave and get. That is off field covered.
On field I don't think they give a sh*t. Players move south after being drafted. Melbourne is where they get pats on the back.

I actually believe the AFL is desperate for GWS to succeed.

Have we all forgotten the AFL’s childish tantrum (otherwise known as the trade ban) when Buddy didn’t go there?

I think they care less about the Swans than they do GWS. GWS need a leg up. Swans don't.
They want GWS to be successful for TV dollars sake. They want GWS to be successful vs rugby league for TV dollars sake.

The AFL wants Swans to be successful and realize the Swans are a good resilient organization only because of the fight against rugby league TV dollars and getting kids to play aussie rules vs playing rugby league only because of TV dollars. Not because they give a shit about the Swans.

The power remains in Victoria. The Swans and GWS are just a means to gain power over kids minds (vs League) and raking in the TV dollars.

Victoria is where the power is at. They don't want to relinquish that power. It has to remain in Victoria.

The Swans and all northern clubs are just a means to an end.

If the AFL actually cared about junior development, Tasmanian inclusion in the AFL, development of clubs in NT, the support of local competitions then their behaviour would be different. But they don't care. As long as they can spread the game and rake in the TV dollars then they can sit back on grand final day in Victoria and feast on the free food and glory of high paid jobs then they can be both fat and happy.

Just for a start i agree with a lot you say , but the fact is the power is in Victoria and it started there and 10 clubs are from there . Nothing we say will change , but i know the new regime will be more friendly .

I really liked Grundy with the kids. Hayward, not so much. I hope he spoke with the little Carlton kid off camera to make it good.
I don't know if you sincerely believe what you're saying when you over-analyse and scrutinise the personalities of players you're not sold on. But from the outside looking in it just comes off as irrational hating to the point where if a player you don't rate even dares to breathe, it draws your ire.

So I thought I'd provide you with an example of what your critiques look like from afar:

I noticed this photo of Sheldrick standing by himself on team photo day. Maybe he is shy. But I think he is anti-social and has alienated himself from his teammates and that's why he hasn't been consistently picked in the 22 so far??
