two posters
-Posters A: I hope Hayward wasn't too hard on the kid
-Posters B: OMG YOU PEOPLE ARE SO SENSITIVE

Seriously, the group in posters B are the ones who have made a bigger deal than any of the above interactions
Posters C: Kid is a Carlton support and needs to learn hardship, unrealistic expectations and that no one will love him from an early age

Sarcasm. Soooo much sarcasm

This is a pretty confronting read but gives some insight on the deadly consequences regarding mismanagement of training & appropriate medical response.

I know we talk about the apparent lack of intensity in pre-season training etc but it's understandable considering the summer weather. Lots of learnings for all sports when dealing with heat management.

Nothing against him in particular but I can't get over the absence of a sense of adventure so many of these kids seem to have. A First Nations kid from the bush I totally get but otherwise...?
There's a really interesting post on AFL Reddit in which a rated draft prospect who was not selected in his years draft did a "Ask me Anything" post. He states the following:
"There are far more kids who don't want to move out of Vic than the media publishes." When pushed he said most of them simply didn't want to leave their mates.

I've often believed that if they didn't have the option, most of these "never leave Vic" kids would be perfectly fine moving interstate for their careers. But if the option to stay with friends & family is there, that trumps any sense of adventure for most people. These are just kids making smart and logical decisions in their best interest. It's the system that's broken.

Certainly explains why we appear to avoid drafting Vic Metro kids in the main. In the AFL.com article Ryley Sanders points out that he and his Tassie mates always knew they'd be leaving home to chase the dream. Pretty much everyone except Vic Metro.

I agree it appears that we avoid drafting Vic Metro kids in the national draft but on closer inspection, it turns out Vic Metro is the well we tend to go to the most! Here's how the last ten national drafts are divided for us:

Vic Metro - 8 (Green, Rankin*, Rowbottom, McInerney*, Stoddart*, Florent, Maibaum, Leonardis)

NSW - 7 (Cleary, Gulden, Campbell, Blakey, Hiscox, Mills, Heeney)

Vic Country - 6 (Mitchell, Vickery, Konstanty, Foot, McCartin, Ling)

SA - 6 (Roberts, Gould, Stephens, Hayward, Rose, Dawson)

WA - 6 (Warner Jr., Sheldrick, McDonald, Warner, Taylor, Cameron)

*Denotes players who represented Vic Metro in U16s/U17s but not U18s, and/or those who weren't selected for Vic Metro but who would've fit into the zoning for Vic Metro if they were selected.

Success rate:

Vic Metro: 3/7 (1 too early to call)

Vic Country: 1/3 (3 too early to call)

SA: 2/5 (1 too early to call)

WA: 3/5 (1 too early to call)

NSW: 5/6 (1 too early to call, 1 not fast enough)

QLD: N/A

Moral of the story - go for NSW and WA kids in the draft! 😋

Wouldn't know how to do the research but would imagine that Vic Metro is the biggest pool and NSW the smallest. As a % of total pool I'm GUESSING that our take from Vic Metro is well below average.

I wish I'd have done those figures while I had them all up in front of me, as that would be interesting to see. If no one else decides to do it I will geek out later today and do them.

Re steering clear of Vic Metro, I've always believed that the pathway we actually steer clear of is the APS. The talent pool is so dilluted with corruption, nepotism & privilege that I'd imagine Beatson & co would look at it and find it hard to know who's there because they really have what it takes and who's there simply because of their parents' chequebook.

I can’t agree with the last statement caesar88, as if you look at it from the WA perspective, all of our top WA talent has come via the PSA.

Sure, parental bank balances help kids get into the PSA - but it (the PSA comp) does help them become AFL quality footballers & I’d hate to think we’d overlook those kids.

I assume it’s not dissimilar in Vic?

I don't know how the PSA works so I can't really comment on it. I do know how the APS works and it's diabolical.

But I wasn't saying the APS doesn't produce a lot of very good footballers. Just that it would be hard for a recruiter to sit down and ascertain whether the draft prospect is where they are because of things like hard work, professionalism etc., or if they've just had opportunities handed to them because of their privilege. That's also not to say that those privileged players don't have the required hard work, professionalism etc., but you see how muddled it is? Recruiters don't want muddled. They want as much confidence and certainty in the player they're dealing with as they can possibly have.

I'd use McInerney as a good example. Marcellin College is hardly the projects, but it also runs like a school football program should be run. McInerney wasn't good enough for his school side initially, so wasn't picked. He worked his way in, then wasn't considered good enough for the Northern Knights, then worked his way in. So if you're Kinnear Beatson and you're meeting McInerney for an interview, you know that when he's telling you he's a hard worker, dedicated etc., that it's genuine, and not just fodder being sold to you, because you can trace it back through his footballing journey.

How do you mean by Marcellin is hardly the projects

Funny way to say it , still don't get it . Their old boys team used to be in A grade , now in C and only for 1 amazing game by Callum Brown they'd be in D . Really struggle for volunteers which is sad
I was clarifying that despite the "underdog" story of McInerney's junior years, he didn't come from a struggling school at all.

In any case last bit of Marcellin-related news I heard was that Leo Barry's son was playing for them and was doing quite well, albeit not enough to be in draft contention.

Leo told me he's no world beater and there are 2
