Jetta impressing off the HBF in the intra club, apparently. What do you reckon? Personally, I can't imagine hum making up for what we lost in mal's defensive work. At all. But offensively it makes sense

Agreed. Jetta should do well there to start with. It's when his player keeps taking him to our goalsquare that we'll know if he'll be able to truly replace Mal.

It took Kennelly and even Mal some games to work it out.

Longmire said that "particular the first year draftees have picked up the game plan quickly". Heeney must have abandoned his precise forward 50 entries and started bombing it long :(

At least it means that the coaches are still trying to bang defensive intent into him. He has improved his tackling but he can be buffeted off the ball easily still and needs to improve in terms of using his body. He's skinny as **** so he can only improve so much, but he can definitely get better.

If Jetta is playing in defence during the regular season, coaches will not allow him to cruise around without having any responsibility. They just won't, he'll get dragged to the square immediately so he'll need to be committed in that area to improve.

I don't mind it, could offer good drive like a Yarran type back there (always preferred him at HB). But yeah, accountability....

Very happy to see them playing Reid down back, if he can get some practice playing on Buddy and Tippett then you'd have to say that would be fairly ideal training experience.

It is a sign that if Jetta doesn't establish himself as an attacking defender, he will be squeezed out of the team with all the midfield runners available.
His main asset is his accurate kicking to position which will be crucial for us out of defence.
He must nail it or his senior position is in danger.

Is it just me or is it too much to ask that we keep brilliant outside attacking weapons in a sort of forward position on the field and not burden them with defensive responsibilities apart from the normal run of the game defence/pressure?

Not suggesting he is weak but I really don't want to see him in defensive wrestles. Seems a tad wasteful.

I thought the same about Chris Yarran when he moved to defence, but last year Yarran was very underrated as a HB flanker. If he can play like that it will be worth a couple of outmuscled contests here-and-there.

Unless it becomes a problem, obviously.

Difference between the two is that Yarran is quite strong and compact, a skilled boxer IIRC. Jetta is lankier, more wiry and not as physical.

Not saying it can't work, but Yarran has more physicality to work with I feel. One on one under a high ball coming inside 50, Yarran would be more difficult to move than Jetta.

Wouldn't expect that Jets will be taking on monsters, perhaps the smaller forwards...the bonus will be that they will have to pay close attention to him or he will carve them up on the way out.

Of course he'd take the smaller guys and I think many of those smaller guys could take advantage against him. Jetta wouldn't have a size or strength advantage over a Puopolo or a Monfries, the kind of secondary small forwards which a team has.

He'd really need to bone up defensively to be trusted. Also think about how much our defenders go third man up and peel off their forwards at the perfect time to help another man. He'd have to learn when to do that AND learn to impact marking contests as a third man in. That's a lot of stuff to get under your belt. All of that defensive stuff didn't properly click with Malceski until the 2nd half of 2012 after all. He had been very spotty to that point. Jetta would be dynamite rebounding out of the back half of course, but there's more to it than that now.

I think the likely outcome is that Jetta won't spend much time in defence and this is just an exercise in contingency planning. Just in case we need him to go down back due to injuries or as a means to get him into the game if he's had a quiet match to that point.

Yes I understand all that, I was more making the point that Jetta playing back will change the dynamics of how small forwards like Puopolo play. There are not too many small forwards that play their best when they drag their opponents to the goal square. And defence is a team game these days, it is unlikely that Jets will be left one out too often.
I also like the idea of Reg handballing to Jets in the back half.

I love this board!

Swans run out against a team with a couple of small defenders: "OMG, they will run it out all day! DAMN YOU JOHN LONGMIRE FOR LIKING TALL PEOPLE!"
Jetta plays off HBF in an intraclub "OMG!@# If he plays there, he will be outmuscled all day!1!!"

Transition speed is king. One of the keys to the Port Adelaide formula. I really like the idea of having Jetta and Rohan together at half back. Any defensive gaps will be managed with mid rotations. The game has moved way beyond simplistic positional strengths and weaknesses.
