He's received 3 POTY votes in finals and he got all 3 in the 2014 prelim final vs North.

What a career.
Was the best game I have ever seen him play tbf

If you can get into the this Adelaide Advertiser article I highly recommend. Has the split for every players club of origin.

Here's the grouping for NSW - with something like a grand total of 6 players coming from the Sydney metropolitan area. Of the two up the Central Coast of of those is a GWS player the other of course is Heeney.

In comparison, Vic Metro has 124 players originating from that area. Gosh I wonder why we need an academy.

When you think back to the Cats trades last year, I am surprised they have not come under more scrutiny over their 2023 performance

Winning a flag is decent paper over cracks for a while

Looks like about 5 from around Wagga (including Harry C) and another 3 from, what, the Griffith area? Who are they? Must be GWS players.

It's an inconvenient truth that the Victorian clubs refuse to acknowledge because they went to maintain any and every advantage they can get.

I might just take some screen shots so I can poke some stats at them next time they get uppity.

As long as you're not expecting anything other than inane comments like "...but COLA"
Kind of sad when someone pops that old chestnut up - I mean, we haven't had it for over a decade now. Its ridiculous.

Here's a better shot with 4 States - most of those 28 on the NSW border are not with GWS. Another issue with NSW football is these ones are closer to Vic than NSW and have no close NSW team to return to if they want to 'go home for family reasons'.

I played Rules in high school in the sixties. We had two good kids go down to Melbourne; one to Saints and one to South. Neither made seniors but Melbourne was 250 miles away, Sydney 470.
Griffith, which had a much stronger comp (SW League) was still 380 miles from Sydney.
The links to the VFL were strong.
The border comps were very strong and linked into the VFL. There's a lot of history there.

This is why when a player from NSW comes on the market I laugh when people say we should target them. There is no go home factor for players from the border region, none at all. Most will opt for Victorian clubs before they think about either us or GWS. Unless they are from Sydney there is no advantage of the player being from NSW.

There might however be an advantage in recruiting such players - but no more so than for a player from Gippsland or the southside of the Murray.

Got ChatGP to write a description of AFL in the voice of Jeremy Clarkson. I am not displeased with the results

-------------
"Ah, the Australian Football League, or as they call it down under, footy! Now, this isn't your genteel game of soccer or your refined game of rugby. No, no, no. This is footy, a sport that takes all the chaos of a barroom brawl, mixes it with the precision of a military operation, and throws in a big oval field just for good measure.

You see, in the AFL, they've taken the concept of 'football' and cranked it up to eleven. It's like they decided that running around a field with a ball wasn't enough, so they added in jumping, tackling, and what appears to be an impromptu game of aerial ballet. I mean, why not? Who needs sensible rules when you can have players leaping over each other like kangaroos on a sugar rush?

And let's not forget the atmosphere. The fans here are absolutely bonkers. They turn up in droves, rain or shine, armed with banners, team scarves, and a level of enthusiasm that could power a small city. The roar of the crowd is enough to make your eardrums beg for mercy, and the rivalries? Well, let's just say that the tension between teams is so thick, you could cut it with a chainsaw.

Now, the goals in AFL are like works of art – massive, towering structures that resemble the Eiffel Tower if it were designed by a particularly rowdy bunch of engineers. And the skill it takes to kick that ball through those posts from seemingly impossible angles? It's like watching a marksman hit a bullseye on a speeding train while blindfolded.

But of course, it wouldn't be a proper sport without a bit of controversy. The umpires are a constant source of debate, with decisions that could baffle a team of quantum physicists. And don't even get me started on the 'shepherding' – it's like they've turned blocking into a contact sport of its own.

In the end, the Australian Football League is a wild, chaotic, and utterly addictive spectacle that's as Australian as a kangaroo in a cork hat. It's a sport that defies convention, embraces the absurd, and has enough action to leave your adrenaline glands begging for mercy. So, whether you're a die-hard fan or a bewildered onlooker, one thing's for sure – the AFL is a thunderous carnival of mayhem, and it's not to be missed!"

As someone from the area, there are stronger links to Melbourne than Sydney.

I don't doubt that but if we recruit players from those areas there is less of a go home factor. That is, the players may not 'come home' to us - but they won't 'go home' to somewhere else either (at least not as much as someone from other parts of Victoria or from other States).

Draft wise we may have more success keeping them long term if they aren't zoned to the Giants, but the Giants are having a hard time keeping them as well. This area on both sides of the border is not any less of a go home factor than any other part of regional Victoria.

Its when say a Todd Marshall comes on the market, he would view one of the Victorian clubs as his return home rather than a move to Sydney to join either us or GWS. Not all players from NSW will view Sydney as a return home as some might think.

Dawson & Serong named in the AA squad. Oh what could have been.

And Aliir Aliir back in 2021.

We've shed some talent over the years (or skipped past them in Serong's case).

Yeah but Serong being in the All Australian team is the AFL equivalent of "I guess they'll let anyone in here"

Nick Larkey was pick 73 yet we took Cameron 20 picks before.

Houston was a late rookie yet we took Harry Marsh as the better rebounding defender
