Potential rookie elevations

Would Stringer and Simpkin playing in the ones today potentially suggest that the spot is out of those two?

I personally would promote Stringer. I understand we have quite a few of his type, but I believe he can have the biggest impact with his body size and determination. Big Fan.

Walker would be my second choice.

I wouldn't think so, although they are obviously playing well.

That said, I just don't see how either of those two can push into the 22, even with Varcoe and Wojo out, ahead of Poodle, Guthrie, Smedts Motlop Byrnes etc.

On the other hand with only 2 fit ruckmen and our only reserve backman (Gillies) not doing a heap, it's more conceivable to see a door in for Walker or Bathie in the near future.

But I've been wrong before, and I might well be wrong again on this one.

Walker was impressive in the two's as was Burbury, wonder if they get a call-up next week.

Has Walker ever rucked before? if he could ruck he could be a wepon can play forward spend last learning the roles down back.if can or could add ruck that would be great.or hawk will be rucking again at some stage this year.

I didn't see the game, but I'm sure K-Rock mentioned that Walker was playing in the ruck last week against the Gold Coast.

Played forward, back had a run on the ball as did every one else at some stage including Hawkins and Brown, wouldn't read to much into that winty.

Ryan Bathie is the most likely. He's next in line for ruck duties.
Walker is next most likely being behind only Brown for key forward position.

The others have almost no chance.
They are behind T Hunt, Byrnes, Motlop, Guthrie, Hogan, Smedts and Horlin-Smith.

Spot on.
On a needs basis,it's put down the glasses.

Yes and no. Depends on whether a spot opens up as part of the ruck rotation or as part of the backs...i.e. do they want a ruck option to rest Orren/West or do they want a fwd/back to rest Scarlo/Pods/Harry/Hawk erc. Ultimately form will be king, if Walker's form is much better then they'll pick him even if he's less familiar with pinch hit rucking than Bathie, if their form is about equal then the ruck issue might be the deciding factor. I reckon Walker's ability to play both forward and back probably gives him an edge, providing he keeps up his form.

On the others, Scott's already signalled his intention to use 30 + players and we have a few kids who are too green (i.e. Hamling McCarthy etc) to be part of that plus a few LTI's, which means there will be spots for the rookies as part of that rotation if they keep banging the door down with good vfl form.

Wouldn't have thought Burburys' done anything to harm his chances, he kicked 3 against Coburg last week after perfoming well in the NAB Cup.
He deserves to be mentioned in the mix.

Possible they're not after a medium type forward replacement for Menzell and need a tall.
Could be a bit stiff.

I've got doubts we will see much of Simpson or Vardy this year and even if we do it will be in the twos, they will have missed to much football IMO to be a factor this year P.O.you really do need a good preseason these days and both have had odd injuries and I just can't see the club taking any chances with them.
I'm sure you have caught on by now I'm a big Walker fan but I think Bathie will get the nod first simply because of the ruck situation and he can play back.
Your right Walker has the advantage of being able to play forward as well but at the moment do we have the need with Brown in contention and Menzel to come back.

I do agree on Simpson and Vardy, they will have missed the entire pre season so we shouldn't expect much from them this year, anything we get is a bonus but we shouldn't be banking on it.

I can see what you mean re Bathie and the ruck situation although the point is neither of them is a particularly decent ruckman at afl level (they are both decent players, just not in the ruck) so if you're going to rest West/Orren and put one of them in (presumably in a week where you are playing weakish ruck opposition) you're likely to be conceding the ruck a lot when they are rucking, so since neither is a specialist ruckman I don't think that'll be the determining factor, as I said unless their form is genuinely equal and it's the tie-splitter so to speak. I think any elevation will be based on form and right now Walker has his nose in front I reckon, although I rate them both.

Given the squad named for Saturday,it would seem Jessie Stringer is the one being looked at most closely.
I have liked what i have seen so far, ball finder, hard tackler.
Only query is disposal, but i think that will be fine once he gets used to the tempo of Seniors footy.
Plays the Geelong way!!

Does anyone know when Geelong needs to lodge it will take its other compensation pick if it is going to be 2012 ?

Anyone know Enright's injury and how long he will be out for ?

I think Geelong will wait and see if we get any more injuries during the season proper before we name the Rookie upgrade.

What a bugger Simpson will not get back into it until mid season. His big chance finally comes along - and we need him and he is out injured for so long and misses the pre-season.

Could have been a handy inclusion this season.

Stringer's inclusion in the squad interests me - especially after he was mentioned as one of the big improvers over the pre-season. But what happened to Cowan - seems like he has disappeared ? Very few mentions of the boy so far - yet many had him as player coming thru.

He's got a lot of competition, Smedts Guthrie THunt Motlop Byrnes etc, very hard to see him breaking into the side, but yes he's obviously impressing the coaches.

Compo pick-March 20th is the deadline is if you look at this article:
http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/130618/default.aspx
Nearly half the clubs in the competition have the ability to activate compensation picks for use at November's national draft, but they must inform the AFL of their intentions by Tuesday, March 20.

Cowan must be injured-he's only played half a game through the whole of the NAB Cup and hasn't played any of the vfl games.

I agree we will wait and see on the rookie upgrade, since it costs additional money in the salary cap I doubt they will upgrade anyone until the week they are likely to be picked in the seniors.

Simpson is unfortunate, Vardy too, a lot of load for West and Orren.

Is there any chance Vardy or Simpson being placed on the LTI list as well as Menzell?

If so, wouldn't that allow for the elevation of another rookie apart from the Menzell elevation?

That way we'd get the opportunity to further cover for what seems unlikely appearances in the near future of these injured payers, or is there likely just the one elevation?
