To me he could play AFL now. Not sure on the fitness ...but the current system just kills guys like him. Get rid of A Rookies add them to the list and have a contract system for non listed players. Ask WC if they would like Mitch Brown on a contract right now.
limited number, limited time frame, top up in AFL if LTIL grows?? What would you have in those contracts, Turbo? A 1 year contract, with the player playing local league if they don't get a VFL game?

I'd rather another Lonergan than another Playfair though. As good as what he's coming along, we're currently a little deprived of up and coming defenders and Ballroom has shown he's not all too bad dropping back and helping out our aging legs in defence.

My guess as they develop the role of defender he will learn the run off , and learn the 1o1 ..same as kolo , same as as tall defeder. Cause if a player like Blitz can not handle the 1o1's ..where will the other side take them? Whether he is eventually the perm. FB type like Lonergan will probably depend on on natural evolution.
Basically I guess im saying is inspite of size and shape , I will not say Blitz or Kolo or whoever will never be our FB. Its possible , and there are other names like Deleaney to consider as well.

Sounds really good. Any clearances / contested possessions? And .. your insights on Read , Vardy clone hadn't sort of seen that.. you have a good eye so I will look for that. To me not quite as obviously athletic yet something a bit more secure. Look forward to seeing him more. So far worth a Rookie pick and a big man that has a natural aptitude for marking is usually a good sign

Its great they have actually played him in the ruck. Last week he was purely a tall forward. He showed he is a good mark but lacked the mobility a forward needs. Probably because he is a good size [first ruck size].

This is good news. He is very young and coming off illness.

Was very brief. Didn't see anything of note while he was in there.

Read would be more number 1 ruckman in style than Vardy. I guess I was just taken by his size and athleticism.

CE , not sure where you were on the Hmac/Simpson debate but why is Hmac worrying? Id be more worried if he was our best option. At his age and history he should be our back up. He will get a chance , but I think he is finding where he sits... and if Vardy comes good, if Read is playable who knows what happens before the end of the year.

I mentioned Willams the other week , a bit of a Cowan hair style. An example of a mid that almost could play AFL but the system precludes him his chance. The VFL kid I liked was Rees?
If Thurlows stays fit ..when does he come in. ASAP for me.
Starting the season I was of the view that in order to compete with the best we needed either McIntosh form of mid 2014 (or better) or Simpson form of 2013 pre-knee injury (or better). Both seem unlikely now. McIntosh needs to be able to match or beat guys of Giles' ability if he is going to be useful for us in the AFL side. Simpson just looks to have lost so much mobility I worry whether his body is capable of returning to 2013 form.

The others on the list cannot make an impact as number one ruckmen in 2015. They are either too raw (Read), returning from injury (Vardy) or needed elsewhere (Clark).

My model will probably have some holes, most do.... but id like it that any non listed player..that has been delisted or been thru multiple drafts and not taken... could be given a 4 week contract. It mean a player may play with multiple side thru a year (giving them exposure ) but a club can at the end of the 4 week period nominate them as a listed player... that the club would then be compelled to list them and give them a 2 year contract.

He started the 2nd half today in the centre square. Not sure if they are trying to build his fitness or they genuinely think it's an option.

I made a suggestion of this awhile back(at least I think I did anyway)

I'm glad they are doing this, he isn't going to get much better by beating up VFL defenders, but spending time in the middle will help him at ground level and deal with the increased congestion at AFL level better.

Yes thats what I saw in Read. His sickness history may have affected his mobility , will be interesting to see him if he stays fit ( getting a bit sick of putting that PS at the end of our players) Id like some figures on his leap. he is only an average height so he will need that to be a real option. Its a super athletic comp now.

I never have had much optimism for Hmac Im afraid. I maintain the games requirement are too much for him in current state. No shame on him , its just the game is tougher than ever , and the injuries have just reduced his talent. I agree on Read and Vardy but still it may just depend on where we sit ( big picture) and how and where Stanley plays.

in the end they'd be like a rookie or a fully listed (able to play AFL) player, Turbo?

And how many? Just a couple each club? more for clubs not going so well? I can see the danger there being that they could push other listed players out of games.

One must remember that unless its exceptional circumstances , listed players will be the most talented. They may however not be the ready to play.
Think of WC. They lack a Key Back. They get Mitch Brown in , he plays AFL for 4 weeks. He is a mature ready to go guy. They have kids that are just not ready. Now after 4 weeks, they either see....
-he is a much better option than their worst listed player and offer him an ongoing spot. In this instance , he probably does cost the worst player a spot at years end. So what. 3 players must be delisted each year. The whole concept should be to have the best players capable of playing at the best level so the lesser players fall out.
or
-he is not what they hoped. Not much better than their younger or other options that maybe be a better choice long term. So they let him go. Again the best player stays in the system. But perhaps another club with the similar requirements saw him play , and then give him a 4 chance.

Think on Pods. In out , in out so very close but the system eventually condemned him to being a missed opportunity till the mature Rookie rule allowed him a chance. A 4 week contract may have seen him in years earlier.

I don't like the idea if you want to do anything lets go back to a mid season draft.

I don't know how many times a group of people can say it so I'll shout it
WALKER MUST PLAY IN THE ONES.

How many times must it be said??????..........are you listening C Scott and MC?....probably not, while we cry out for a big forward tough guy.
Please~ will someone down there finally wake up? .... and this kid has a blue and white heart, it's a family tradition to him forgoodnessake let him play.

I think Son of told the storey about young Tom Reid last week, copped a couple of wacks for it but as usually he was on the money, big potential.

Fare enough it was short lived last time, lets stick with the status quo.
Unfortunately ..life is not like that.. Change will happen sooner or later. It may well be the introduction of a mid season draft , just like FA what is old can be new again. Drafts are to mainly equalise new talent across the comp , not to solve immediate need. So personally , I doubt that just going thru a draft process is the right approach. The way we signed Blitz and Lux , straight to the player is better... a player already playing somewhere (lets say Port Melb.) and GWS come at him...maybe he says no I do not want to reset my life for that opportunity. Maybe West Coast come and he say yes great that suits me. ..whatever. Then we have clubs that need a type not just looking at best available. Some sort of FA system ( i like the contract idea but Im sure other sports around the world have developed systems)... can be tried.

That FA is going to have to be reworked to if it is to deliver what the AFL thought it would, their created the exact opposite to what they wanted.

Not for to long especially when performing like he is, you only end up hurting yourself.
Those whacks were from the resident geniuses on here by the way!
punishment for Sins of the father taken out on the poor kid. Poor form that.

You can never help the scour grape supporters on here when things don't go their way. Not a very humble lot!
