Preferring not to finish top 4?

Anyone else out there prefer not to make top 4 as it stands? It will take A LOT of effort to get there and may tire our boys for the finals, especially with an away trip to Perth the week before the finals. I say we accept a home elimination final against a team we should easily beat in a do or die situation at AO (Essendon, Collingwood Richmond, West Coast) and send a reserves team over to face Freo in round 23. Then the team will be fresh and ready for a strong finals campaign.

Even if we sneak into 4th by beating Freo in round 23, we will get absolutely smashed the following week with another physical, away game against either Sydney or Hawthorn. I fear the whole finals campaign will collapse after those two games.

Yes we will have to face Sydney or hawthorn but anything can happen in finals. I will back our boys against any team come finals.

Finishing 4th gives a free hit at a home prelim.

Lose and you're back to where you would have been if you'd finished 5th AND had negotiated a win in the elim final.

Preference for 5th is beyond any rational thought process

top 4 also give you a guaranteed home final shot at a prelim, win the first week of finals and you get a week off and a home prelim, lose the first week and in the second week you get a home final with a shot at the prelim. the gap from 4th to 5th is huge.

6th is the ideal place to finish if we can't make top 4. We then most likely play essendon if they beat west coast and then face the loser of geelong v hawks rather than freo in freo..

54 out of 56 preliminary finalists under the current finals system have come from the top 4. If you don't make the top 4, you don't get past the semis.
