Sorry to ask such a simple question but I couldn't find the answer on the Official AFL site.

When is the Preseason/Rookie Draft?

Who does everyone think we should rookie this year. I believe that we are not going to participate in the pre season draft so who will our rookies be.

My Tips

Darren Brakenridge
Clint Dubieniecki
Tim Hazell
Brad Lang / Rowan Andrews

Having had Porplyzia and Bratten on the list last year i think they would have been retained if the club truly wanted another year of looking at them close up?????

Will be another interesting day tomorrow!

I thought that with the exception of rook listed players recruited from interstate (e.g. Parker), the club had the choice of upgrading to the senior list or delisting, but not squirrelling them away on the rookie list for a second year. Therefore both Bratton and Porplyzia had to be released unless they were worthy of promotion.

Not exactly true. Players that are kept on for a second year have to agree to it before the drafts etc. They then can't nominate for those drafts.

Patfull was retained by Port, and he is a south aussie. He then couldnt go in the draft.

If you draft a rookie from interstate, they are guaranteed a spot on your list for 2 years. However, if you draft a rookie from your home state, you have a choice of keeping them on your list for 1 or 2 years (I think as long as they are under a certain age).

Really hope you guys give Timmy Hazell a shot. Whilst injuries have been problematic, he's got a great work ethic and is just worth a punt I suppose.

Good luck guys.

From today's Advertiser:

Power looks for big rookie boost

Unlikely to take part in the pre-season draft, Adelaide – which has retained rookie Aidan Parker – has surrounded itself with prospective talls and is likely to use two of its four rookie choices on big men.

"Out of the four I'd think that at least two of them will be talls," Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia said. "We're very comfortable with the lads we've had train with us because they've all acquitted themselves well.

"The big guys have come in and stepped up to the program – no-one's missed a beat."

Parry prays for shot at the top

I CAN'T wait for you to get down here and feel the pain."

Craig Parry's good mate Aidan Parker delivered this warning to him before the aspiring rookie arrived at West Lakes.
Parry could have looked at the statement with apprehension or aggression. And the bustling Port Adelaide Magpies' ruckman chose the latter.

"I'm going against other (aspiring) rookies so you're trying to beat them in all the things you do," Parry, who was first ruck in The Advertiser's SANFL Team of the Year, said.

"It's all going well at the moment. It's a lot different to normal training because you're training twice a day but I've got used to it now.

"If you stick with a couple of boys at your pace from the league group you go alright."

Already assured of his place on Adelaide's rookie list, Parker has been going out of his way to ensure his former Subiaco team-mate rejoins him.

"He's been encouraging me a lot by telling me what I should do and what I shouldn't," Parry, 20, said.

"He's been a great help by introducing me to a lot of the boys."

At 194cm and 94kg, Parry is shorter than most ruckmen but for those who think he may struggle in the AFL, he has a message.

"I can jump, I've got up against some good players in the SANFL and back in Subiaco I played against (Ryan) Turnbull (former West Coast ruckman) as well," Parry, who did an admirable job of leading the Magpies' rucking division in 2003, said.

"I love playing in the ruck and I don't mind going up against taller blokes – I just spring into them and get my knees into them."

Under new Magpies coach Matthew Knights, Parry is set to develop another side of his game by playing in defence.

"This year Matthew Knights is getting me into the role of centre half-back," Parry revealed. "So that will also be good for me to expand the positions on the field I can play."

With the Crows on the hunt for ruckmen and key defenders this should only assist his chances of joining Parker today but Parry is not so certain.

"I wish I was confident," Parry said.

"It's so undecided and it's hard for the coaches to give you any feedback but I'm definitely praying."

Crows quartet fits tall order
By DOUG ROBERTSON
17dec03

THEY come from different angles but Adelaide rookies Brad Dabrowski, Matthew Smith, Tim Hazell and Rowan Andrews shared the same relief when called up yesterday.

The fortunate four wanted a crack at the AFL and they had what the Crows wanted most . . . height.
Smith, 20, prematurely cut from the Crows main list after three years, and Hazell, 22, a rookie at Hawthorn last year, get a second chance.

Andrews, 18, a Tassie Mariner ruckman from the same town as Hazell, is an investment in the Crows' future while Dabrowski, 22, has earned a look at the elite league after a rollicking SANFL season under West Adelaide's Shaun Rehn.

"I'm pretty happy but it's just a step," Dabrowski said. "Rehnny let me take a lot of the load and I gained a lot of confidence from that."

Getting cut sparked the right reaction from Smith, who will resume at West Lakes today. "I was disappointed but determined to prove I had what it takes to make it," he said from Melbourne where he has been training with Carlton. "I'm rapt to get another chance with the Crows."

Dabrowski, Hazell and Andrews proved their commitment over the past month at West Lakes.

"I really needed a fresh start," said Hazell, a running midfielder hindered by shoulder and groin injuries at the Hawks. "At this stage getting fit and getting through the pre-season is what I want to do, then start developing my game when the games start."

Andrews was rated best first-year player for Clarence in the Tasmanian Southern Football League and aims to develop as a key forward.
