Brisbane could ask for a priority pick

Essendon's chances of being given the No.1 pick in this year's draft could be weakened by the strong stance of the Brisbane Lions, who believe they deserve a priority draft selection.

Fairfax Media understands that Brisbane will go to the AFL seeking a priority pick if the club wins five games or less this season.

The Lions, along with Essendon and Fremantle, are locked on one win for the season, with percentage currently placing the Bombers on the bottom of the ladder.

The news is sure to anger officials at Essendon, with AFL chief Gillon McLachlan publicly declaring earlier in the year that the Bombers would be given the No.1 pick if they finished last.

If Essendon finished 18th and Brisbane 17th – and the AFL grants the Lions a priority pick – Brisbane could conceivably be handed picks one and three, with the Bombers demoted to pick two.

A similar precedent was set in 2007, when Carlton finished second-last but still ended up with the firstpick, with wooden spooner Richmond shifted to the second pick.

After being given a priority selection, Carlton ended up with picks one and three; they took Matthew Kreuzer first and used pick three as part of the package to trade to West Coast in exchange for Chris Judd, while the Tigers took eventual captain Trent Cotchin with pick two.

Carlton won seven games across 2006 and 2007, prompting the AFL to hand the Blues a priority selection.

Brisbane won four games last season and the belief within the club remains that five wins or less in 2016 gives them adequate grounds to ask for a priority pick.

The weekend results has prompted discussion surrounding the validity of Essendon receiving the top pick, given the amount of talented players returning from doping suspensions for the 2017 season.

The Bombers will be bolstered by returning stars Dyson Heppell and Cale Hooker, and are confident that captain Jobe Watson and star defender Michael Hurley will also recommit to the club.

AFL football operations boss Mark Evans moved to reassure Essendon on Sunday that the league wouldn't take steps to change the system just because of the club's unique circumstances.

"I think the competition needs for Essendon to rebuild," Evans said.

"They haven't been able to keep hold of all of their players over the last three years, they're working hard to retain as many as they can of their current list," he told 3AW Radio.

"But we're not sure ... how do they come back after 12 months out of the game."

A potential request from Brisbane for a priority pick would be treated as a separate issue and could still result in the Lions being handed pick one in the draft.

Brisbane believe the doubt surrounding whether Essendon is deserving of the first pick may bolster their case for a priority selection, a request that was denied by the AFL at the end of last season.

My favourite part 'I think the competition needs for Essendon to rebuild.' Because they haven't done this to themselves and also they are not getting 12 core senior players back?

As in it does not need us to rebuild?

Talk in the media as to whether or not Essendon should have the number one pick.
Some have said you can't take it off them, because you can't just "add" to the punishment, after the original punishment has been dished out.

Conversely, I think that letting them have the number one pick is actually rewarding them for being in the position that they're in. And I'm not sure a team should be rewarded for that.

They still have compo payments to come too which is a huge loophole for them to take advantage of. Out of the salary cap payments to their 12 players with the potential to do all sorts of dirty deals.

totally agree, started a thread on this on the main board and it got locked for some reason:huh:

We don't deserve a priority pick.
Poor drafting, list management, coach selections and player retention is all the clubs doing.
Not the AFL's.
I'd hate if we got it.
Let's get out of this mess ourselves with common sense and the reverse of the self inflicted issues that got us here in the first place.
Good start by signing two list cloggers to 2 year extensions. Hope I'm proved wrong.

This is such an ill-informed, misguided post, I don't know where to start - so I won't.

i would love it if we received a priority pick, whether we deserve it or not is of no concern to me. if we could get it and also trade up to another pick in the top 5-6 it would be even better. imagine getting 3 of McGluggage/petrevski-seton/brodie/marshall + allison, rolls and watson.

while we're asking for the PP mise well ask for 10 million towards the admin/training base and a retention allowance and an assurance that the academies will stay with the 20% discount and a slightly friendlier draw to start next year off, that's for starters anyway.

I'm glad you added "just for starters" you had me worried!

Poor Bombers. Imagine if they only got pick 2 on top of all the other talented players they have coming back next year.

Only the Victorian AFL media could frame a story in such a way.

Don't look at it as a priority pick. Look at it as repayment for the top 3 and 4 picks we missed out on in 2010 and 2011.

Yeah, but it is good for the competition to get them back off the mat. Even though they are in this position because of their own mismanagement and AFL imposed punishment for that mismanagement. Not as important to have the Lions back up and about... despite rotting away while the AFL are busying setting up 2 other clubs to prop up the TV rights deal.
