Was just having a play around on footywire.com before, and I decided to play around with our current list, and came across an amazing fact. Come Round 1 next year, we'll only have 15 players on our list who will be aged 25 and over. The other 30 players on our list will be aged 23 or under come Round 1. When was the last time our list had an age demographic like that?

For those wondering, here are the respective ages of our players come March 20 next year:

32 - Corey Enright
30 - Steve Johnson, Jimmy Bartel, James Kelly
29 - Tom Lonergan, Andrew Mackie, Hamish McIntosh, Jarad Rivers, Mathew Stokes
27 - Harry Taylor
25 - Travis Varcoe, Joel Selwood, Jackson Sheringham, Tom Hawkins, Dawson Simpson
23 - Mitch Brown, Taylor Hunt, Steven Motlop, Josh Cowan
22 - Mark Blicavs, Jesse Stringer, Allen Christensen, Mitch Duncan, Nathan Vardy, Daniel Menzel
21 - Jordan Murdoch, Billie Smedts, George Burbury, Josh Caddy, Josh Walker, Jordan Schroder, George Horlin-Smith, Shane Kersten
20 - Joel Hamling, Lincoln McCarthy, Jed Bews
19 - James Toohey, Jackson Thurlow, Brad Hartman, Nick Bourke, Michael Luxford
18 - Zachary Bates, Jarrad Jensen, Jake Kolodjashnij, Darcy Lang

Could get a pretty decent 23 and under side out of that lot!

I still dont get the age thing.
It does nothing for me.

SJ at 30 is as effective as 2x 18 year olds.

If you want to do a real test winty.

Do the average age of the team from the prelim.
Swap the delisted guys for 18 year olds.

Let's see the change. Minimal.
Games lost. Significant.

The thing that will keep us in finals contention at least is having Taylor, Selwood, Hawkins and Motlop in that 23-27 prime age bracket. You could argue all four of those guys are in our top five players at their best. And we've got guys like Duncan and Bundy just coming into their prime.

From 32 - 27… about 20 odd premiership medals over 10 people ( 8 who won them)

That is an amazing stat too winty that only 15 of our list will be over 25 at Rd1.

Granted, those 8 in the 32 - 27 group are some massively handy types but still - it's not like we have are full of 30 years old with nothing behind them….

You gotta hand to to Wells, Cook, Carter and Scotty. The transition is well and truly underway and given we finished 3rd this year going fairly well….

15 is still quite a few. Taking ages at April 1 of each season, the most we have had was 20 in 2010.

The least since 2000 was 6 in 2003.

Doesn't change the fact that next year is a premiership year.

Every year is a Premiership year.
The question is, who is going to win it?

Yeah great info and everyone gets to see where we are in relation our age profile as a club.

Now age is not everything but few players get these days to 32. Some do but they are becoming the exception.

It shows that Enright, Kelly and Bartel are not far away form retiring. At best all have 2 years. Think SJ can go for 3 years. Maybe even Enright and Kelly will go at the end of 2014, Bartel and Rivers 2015 and SJ and HMac 2016. Mackie 2017. That would make for a smoother transition. All depends on form.

By then the youngsters coming thru will have proven themselves and the team will be completely rejuvenated.

Wow so many good players have come and gone and some soon to go. It has to happen but what a shame.

It's likely that Kelly and Bartel only have 2 years left. If Bartel plays forward and continues to play at a similar level, maybe 3? SJ could be done in 2 years as he's been managing his ankle for years. But could go longer. Hmac probably will be done at end of 2015, possibly Stokes, Lonergan too. Mackie 2016 maybe? Rivers could be gone end of next year, if Brown can force him out or club decide to chase another FA like Frawley perhaps. Thing is we don't know, once guys get to around 30, the end can come pretty quick. Each player is different, sometimes it's the body that gives up, other times its the mind. AFL footy is a tough gig.
The club has shown they are going to favour the younger guys though to help prepare for it, so they are as experienced as possible to shoulder the load when they need to. It's a shame but it's exciting at the same time to me.

That group of 25 and 23 year olds really hasn't fired at all (Captain aside). Motlop and Hawk have had one good year each and that's it.
That's our main weakness at the moment IMO the "bridge" between the youngsters and the oldies.

It will be massively important to keep getting games into that group and more importantly more debutants..

I do, your 25 to 27 year olds are the players you look at to be running just as hard in the last quarter of a final as they were at the beginning of the season,we missed them in this years prelim.
But that's the Draft/equalization policy of the AFL.

Who thinks we would still have West if HMC wasn't picked up last year?
Or would we have gone for a ruck this year?
Interesting times, and HMc must be feeling a little like Harry at present.
Kewell that is.
Lots of pressure and expectation that he will be the saviour when he FINALLY gets on the park.

Quite a few important players in the 29+ range, hopefully a few guys in the 21 category can step up next season.

Edit: Would like to add I figured when we let Pods and Chappy go that we were signaling we didn't think next season was one we could win the flag in.

That would be this year.
Next year, if ALL goes well, the guys we really need to be ON to give us a chance, are Hawkins & Simpson. Get those 2 perfect, and with the rest of our existent list, we rae as good a chance as any team.
Chappy was past history all year, always one week to the next, and a luxury if we made it to the GF.
Pods was ineffective when we needed him most, like most of 2013 with Hawk lame.

I agree Pods wasn't great this year, at one point I was calling for him to be dropped. However he is a player that regardless of his impact took a strong defender. If Hawkins ends up struggling again this season our key forward targets will be young guys that when we had a full side this year would have been playing on the 3rd defender. Relying on guys like Vardy, Walker, Brown and Kerstan to step up and potentially take the number 1 key defender from the opposition doesn't seem like a great option. The only other thing I can think of is swinging Harry forward but for mine he is far to important in defence with Lonergan beginning to decline.

Let's just hope they can get Hawkins right for a big season.

As for Chappy, yes there were reliability issues with his body, but for mine he was still our best player in the only final we won. If the game hadn't changed so much in the last few years I think he could have been perfect in the Riccardi burst of the bench role. Will be interested to see what he can bring to Essendon next season.
